Forty-two years ago, on May 29, 1983, a 14-year-old Sankaranarayanan was inducted into the mutt as Vijayendra Saraswathi the 70th pedathipathi. In 2018, he succeeded Jayendra Saraswathi and presided over the affairs of the mutt. Since both Jayendra Saraswathi and Vijayendra Saraswathi were inducted in their teens, the age of the 71st pontiff is also expected to be less than 25 years, a close devotee said. The acharya will be from the Rig Veda sampradaya, as per the tradition.

Sources say arrangements for the
spiritual event
will begin from April 27. An emotional devotee said, 'I am particularly blessed to be part of the induction of the present Sankaracharya in Kurnool in 1983 and to again witness this after 42 years in Kanchipuram is a lifetime opportunity.'
Acharyas of the mutt do the pujas for the deities, besides taking care of the daily administration. Devotees say the daily pooja for deities Chandramouleshwara and Tirupurasundari has never been missed in the past 2,500 years.
