Jeweller accuses staff of 5cr gold theft
Pune: A prominent city jeweller from Sadashiv Peth lodged a complaint with the Vishrambaug police on Sunday, accusing one of his employees of stealing gold ornaments worth Rs4.89 crore in phases between April 1 and May 26. The manager of the shop, aged 37 and a resident of Sangvi, lodged a complaint with the police against the employee on Sunday. Senior inspector Vijaymala Pawar of Vishrambaug police told TOI, "We detained the employee of the store, who is a resident of Kothrud, on Monday evening for questioning. We are yet to make any recovery in the case." Pawar said, "The jewellery store manager told us in his complaint that the employee was given the task to man the counters and to show ornaments to customers. Also, he was given the task to shift the jewellery to the storeroom within the shop." "The employee stole a piece of jewellery every time he showed it to the customers," the complaint stated. "He also picked up the jewellery while shifting them from the shop to the storeroom," Pawar said. "The store conducted an audit of the jewellery earlier this month, and the theft came to light. All the jewellery handled by the employee was missing. Following this, the jeweller studied the CCTV footage of the shop and decided to lodge a complaint with the police," Pawar said.
