Health team rushes to Burmu as 3 die of ‘mystery' illness

Ranchi: District health department on Friday despatched a team to Jamgai village in Burmu block of the district for health check-up of its residents after three people, including two children, died of an unidentified illness on Wednesday.

he deceased were identified as Vikram Ganjhu (24), Omprakash Ganjhu (12) and Abhay Ganjhu (6). Vikram fell ill after returning from New Delhi recently and underwent treatment at a private hospital for cold, cough, and fever. After initial recovery, he suddenly developed acute abdominal pain and died during treatment. Omprakash, who was also under care at a private facility, reportedly died in a similar manner.
Abhay also complained of sudden stomach pain and died shortly.
Dr Tariq Anwar, the in-charge of local community health centre, lead a four-member team to investigate the causes of death and check the health of other residents.
"We interacted with the families and community members to understand the pattern of symptoms and medical history. Samples have been collected and preliminary screening of villagers was carried out. We are particularly monitoring symptoms like abdominal pain, fever, and respiratory distress to trace any common source," he said.
Another will be held on Saturday to conduct tests such as HIV, haemoglobin, hepatitis B and blood cell counts, especially among migrant workers who have returned.
