Calangute: Strong winds and sudden heavy rain brought down branches of a huge mango tree damaging five parked cars at Khobrawaddo, Baga, on Thursday morning. However, no one was injured in the incident. Officials at the Pilerne fire station said that one car was completely crushed, while four were partly damaged. These included one tourist taxi and an AP-registered car belonging to a tourist. The officials have estimated the loss to be more than Rs 10 lakh. At Umtawaddo, the roof of a house belonging to Vincent Pereira was blown off by the strong gusty winds. Late Wednesday night, a tree came crashing down on a compound wall and a parked car and scooter at Verem.

LABUAN: Telekom should look into its landlines which had been engulfed by thick unwanted growth and were dangling dangerously low as this condition caused uneasiness among users of the services. Acting as consumer spokesman Vincent Pereira said such a sight is common in a few out-of-town locations and did not befit the island's image as a financial centre and oil and gas hub nor reflect good on maintenance works. He said though technology had advanced with new and faster communication devices in the market landlines were still much relevant and used by many companies. 'Fixed-lines can be attached to fax machine and transmit printed documents with signatures which were legally binding unlike email which could lose in cyberspace,' said Vincent adding as a result most companies have fax machines.
