Hawaiian, Alaska Airlines celebrate blood donors

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hawaiian and Alaska Airlines employees participated in a blood drive at the Hawaiian Airlines headquarters in Honolulu on June 12 in honor of World Blood Donor Day. The recently-merged airlines hope to raise awareness for the need for safe blood and blood products, as well as to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their gifts that can ultimately save lives. Alaska Airlines provided Smith and his family with travel to Hawaiʻi, so he may donate in the last state on his list. Last summer, the airline flew Smith to Anchorage, where he donated in his 49th state. In addition to helping Smith with his travel accommodations, Alaska Airlines donated $10,000 to the Blood Bank of Alaska. Gettysburg man to achieve goal of donating blood in all 50 states

GETTYSBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — More than a decade ago, a Gettysburg man embarked on a journey to donate blood in all 50 states. Years later, that dream will finally become a reality. Vinton Smith, of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, made his first donation 38 years ago as part of an effort to help others in his community. More than a decade ago, Smith got a new job that required him to travel frequently, kickstarting a journey that would send shockwaves through blood donation services nationwide. On June 14, 2025, also known as World Blood Donor Day, Vinton Smith will donate blood in Honolulu, Hawaii, achieving his goal of donating blood in all 50 states. 'I often think about when I need blood someday, hopefully I never do. But if I do, someone will have done that for me, and so I really encourage everyone to take a few moments to think about it and reflect on how they can have a positive impact on other people's lives,' Smith said.
