Selena Gomez Embraces Her Bride-to-Be Era in an Unexpected Dress Trend

Selena Gomez looked every bit the bride-to-be at the 40th Santa Barbara International Film Festival: Virtuosos Award gala. On Feb. 9—while the rest of the world was watching the Super Bowl (and Taylor Swift)—the Rare Beauty founder hit the red carpet at the Arlington Theatre wearing her best bridal mini dress yet. On her way into the venue, Gomez covered the off-white shift with an oversize beige fur wrap coat that fell to her ankles. Nour Hammour has been the billionaire's fur-trimmed coat brand of choice this winter, and here, it certainly seems like stylist Erin Walsh pulled another shearling statement piece from the line. In December, memorably, the billionaire got engaged wearing a similarly textural Yeti coat. $2,950 at Nour Hammour Underneath her fluffy marshmallow jacket, the Emilia Pérez star layered a cream-colored mini with high neckline and a spiraling peplum rosette detail across her hips. The frock instantly recalled the intricately beaded white Raisa Vanessa dress the "Single Soon" singer chose for an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in January. It's also a nod to the peplum trend's resurgence—which Gomez championed with another little white dress at Cannes last summer. $1,820 at Moda Operandi The Oscar nominee accessorized her wifey-coded ensemble with matching white Christian Louboutin slingback heels adorned with a double-strap buckle detail at the ankle. Of course, no outfit would be complete for the Rare Beauty mogul without her marquise-cut diamond engagement ring from producer Benny Blanco. She also wore a couple additional teardrop and leaf-shaped diamond cocktail rings for good measure. $845 at Bergdorf Goodman The Only Murders in the Building actor finished the look by styling her lob haircut in brushed-out brunette S-waves. Her makeup, meanwhile, combined a mostly matte complexion with '60s mod-inspired peach lipstick and fluttering eyelashes. Could this naturally perfected-looking glam be an early glimpse of her future wedding makeup? Only time will tell.

Selena Gomez breaks silence on 'Emilia Pérez' co-star's offensive posts
Selena Gomez is breaking her silence as her film "Emilia Pérez" is embroiled in a PR crisis due to past social media posts from co-star Karla Sofía Gascón. In a Q&A about her Virtuosos Award win during the Santa Barbara International Film Festival on Sunday, the Golden Globe nominee admitted that the recent controversy has impacted the way she's been feeling as the Netflix crime drama musical collects trophies at Hollywood award shows. "I'm good. I'm really good," Gomez, 32, said. "Some of the magic has disappeared. But I choose to continue to be proud of what I've done, and I'm just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could." Gomez's comment comes days after director Jacques Audiard distanced himself from Gascón in a Feb. 5 interview with Deadline, calling her past social media posts "inexcusable" and confirming he had not been in contact with her since they became public. In recent weeks, Gascón has made a number of public statements in response to her racist and xenophobic social media posts that an X user resurfaced at the end of January. This is a critical time for Hollywood's award season, with final votes for the March 2 Academy Awards due on Feb. 18. "Emilia Pérez" leads with 13 nominations. Gascón has offered her "sincerest apologies" for her past comments aimed at Muslim people, Oscars diversity and George Floyd, which were seemingly posted as recently as 2020. However, she also denounced the people who brought her years-old posts to the forefront, writing, "They have achieved their objective, to stain my existence with lies or things taken out of context." In a 50-minute interview with Juan Carlos Arciniegas for CNN en Español on Feb. 2, Gascón said she did not "recognize" some of the old posts social media users have called out, per CNN. During the Q&A, Gomez expressed excitement for her acting career, which has been marked by Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for "Only Murders in the Building" and "Emilia Pérez," respectively. "Having someone see something in me besides the obvious was such a special experience," Gomez said. "The director just really trusted me, and I was so grateful because I've gotten to show people that I am capable of doing more. And I hope this is just the beginning for me in this field." She also cast doubt on her future as a singer. 'Emilia Pérez' controversy: Why 'torturous' movie is criticized for its representation "I'm ready to just focus on this for a while," Gomez said. " I think film and art making and being around such incredible, talented people that have done nothing but uplift me along the way. I don't know, it's going to be hard for me to ever go back to music after this." After the film festival crowd expressed shock at this admission, Gomez laughed for at least 10 seconds. When asked whether she would "never say never," the Disney Channel alum replied: "Maybe." Gascón was also among this year's recipients of the Virtuosos Award but was not in attendance at the film festival. The award, which is presented to "'up-and-coming' actors for achieving a breakthrough performance," also named Kieran Culkin, Ariana Grande, Mikey Madison Harris Dickinson, Clarence Maclin and John Magaro as honorees. Meanwhile, "Emilia Pérez" co-star Zoe Saldaña was named the recipient of SBIFF's American Riviera Award, which honors "outstanding achievement in American film." The actress has also criticized Gascón's posts. "It makes me really sad because I don't support (it), and I don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group," Saldaña said at a Q&A on Jan. 31, per a video by The Hollywood Reporter. Selena Gomez Admits Some 'Emilia Pérez' 'Magic' Is Gone After Costar's Tweets
Selena Gomez is the latest person connected with 'Emilia Pérez' to admit that the film's Oscar campaign has been affected by the resurfaced tweets of its star Karla Sofía Gascón. During an onstage interview Sunday night at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, where Gomez was receiving the Virtuosos Award, she discussed the controversy's effect on her. 'Some of the magic has disappeared,' Gomez conceded when asked about the topic. The actor insisted she is still happy with the film, saying she chooses 'to continue to be proud of what I've done and I'm just grateful. I live with no regrets, and I would do this movie over and over again if I could.' Although 'Emilia Pérez' is up for 13 Oscars ― with Gascón nominated for Best Actress ― the actor's racist, bigoted and controversial social media posts have stirred up negative publicity for the film since coming to light last month. One of the tweets criticized the diversity of the 2021 Oscars, where Daniel Kaluuya, who is Black, and Youn Yuh-jung, who is South Korean, won Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress, respectively. Ironically, Gascon's nomination this year is a triumph for diversity, as she is the first openly trans actor to be nominated for Best Actress. In another now-deleted tweet from October 2022 ― long before Gascón and Gomez worked together ― Gascón appeared to comment on a photo of Gomez posing with Hayley Bieber, who is married to Gomez's ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber: 'She's a rich rat who plays the poor bitch whenever she can and will never stop bothering her ex-boyfriend and his wife,' read the post on X, formerly Twitter. Gascón denied writing that post and insisted it was a fabrication. 'Of course that's not mine,' she insisted to CNN en Español. 'I have never said anything about my partner. I would never refer to her that way.' She also declined to withdraw from the Oscars race, claiming she has 'not committed any crime' nor 'harmed anyone.' 'I am neither racist nor anything that all these people have tried to make others believe I am,' she said. Gomez didn't comment on Gascón's post during her interview on Sunday night. Still, her comments about the controversy make her the third person connected with 'Emilia Pérez' to offer their thoughts on it. Zoe Saldana, who is up for Best Supporting Actress, said earlier this month that she's 'still processing everything that has transpired' and added, 'It makes me really sad because I don't support and don't have any tolerance for any negative rhetoric towards people of any group.' Last week, 'Emilia Pérez' director Jacques Audiard said that the controversy has affected his relationship with Gascón, with whom he had worked closely. 'When you have that kind of relationship and suddenly you read something that that person has said, things that are absolutely hateful and worthy of being hated, of course that relationship is affected,' Audiard said. 'It's as if you fall into a hole. Because what Karla Sofía said is inexcusable.' You can watch Gomez's full interview below.
