Choley Service To Be Expanded To Areas Around Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal

KANGAR, May 20 (Bernama) -- The 'choley' service, a decorated three-wheeled motor vehicle operating in Kampung Warna Warni, Kuala Perlis near here, will be expanded to areas around the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal in an effort to strengthen Perlis' tourism identity. State Tourism, Arts, Culture and Rural Development Committee chairman Abu Bakar Hamzah said the move was in line with the recommendation by the Raja Muda of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, to make choley a tourism trademark for the state in conjunction with Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025, which will be extended to 2026. 'If Melaka is known for its trishaws, we want to highlight choley for Perlis. We will increase the number of units from the current 30 in Kampung Warna Warni to 100 in strategic areas such as the Kuala Perlis Ferry Terminal,' he told reporters after observing the initial implementation of the choley service at the terminal today.

Perlis bans vape sales effective Aug 1

KANGAR: The sale of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) or vape will be banned in Perlis effective Aug 2, said Perlis Menteri Besar Mohd Shukri Ramli. Mohd Shukri said this decision was made based on the ban on the use of vape, which was deemed haram through the decision of the Perlis State Fatwa Committee regarding e-cigarettes in 2022. 'In this regard, vape traders (in Perlis) must be ready to find new businesses, as their licences and business operations will be halted (starting Aug 1),' he said at a press conference after chairing the exco meeting at the State Legislative Assembly Complex here today. Mohd Shukri said that although it is not possible to completely curb the use of vape, he is optimistic that banning the sale of e-cigarettes will save young people from getting caught up in using vape. He said the local authorities (PBT) will conduct monitoring and enforcement operations on business premises selling vape after Aug 1. Meanwhile, Mohd Shukri said Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025 will continue until next year to align with the federal government's organisation of Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026). 'We hope that tourist arrivals in Perlis will increase with Visit Malaysia Year going on concurrently, and that it will bring many benefits to the people of Perlis. 'I urge the people of Perlis to welcome tourists to boost the economy and to treat all tourists who come to Perlis perfectly,' he said, adding that the number of tourists entering the state last year had met the target of around 3.5 million people. He added that the state government might add new suitable tourism programmes in addition to the existing Visit Perlis Year 2024-2025 programmes to attract more tourists to the state next year.

Among the products that stole the limelight were salt belacan, honey belacan, pekasam sepat and lampam, as well as cordial Harumanis – which is synonymous with Perlis' identity and uniqueness.-Bernama photo TAWAU (May 11): The Jualan MADANI Koperasi held in conjunction with the MADANI Rakyat Programme (PMR) 2025 Sabah has received an overwhelming and encouraging response, said Malaysian Cooperative Commission (Sabah), Malisah Sinin, senior assistant director (Development). She said the sale, which is organised by the commission, offers 51 essential goods at prices up to 30 percent lower than market rates. 'This sale aims to help ease the burden of rising living costs, and we've seen a very positive response from the Tawau community. Besides reducing household expenses, we also aim to boost the local economy. 'The three-day sale held offers essential items such as rice, sugar, eggs and cooking oil, as well as personal care and household cleaning products,' she told Bernama. Malisah added that the Jualan MADANI Koperasi, operated by Koperasi Emas Tawau Sabah as the main coordinator, plays a vital role in delivering essential goods to the community through a mobile sales approach. 'We want to expand the role of cooperatives as distribution centres for essential goods, reaching every corner of the country so people can truly benefit from the government's price control and subsidy initiatives,' she said. Malisah added that the commission brought together 19 cooperatives to participate in this edition of the sale. One of the beneficiaries, 38-year-old food vendor Nur Mastura Hamzah, said she managed to save nearly RM200 in business capital by purchasing supplies through the Jualan MADANI Koperasi. 'This is a big help for small entrepreneurs like me. Previously, the rising cost of raw ingredients forced me to cut down on production, but with the lower prices offered here, I can now increase my output,' she said. A resident of Taman Sri Tawau, Nur Mastura, said that the affordable prices allow her to maintain her pricing, enabling her customers to continue enjoying her products. Md Zainuddin Umar, 62, a retired civil servant from Bandar Sri Indah, described the Jualan MADANI Koperasi as a lifeline for pensioners and hoped that it would be held regularly in Tawau. 'With a limited pension and rising living costs, programmes like this are highly anticipated. I bought two months' worth of essentials with the same budget I usually spend for one month at regular stores,' he said. What impressed him most was that the quality of goods offered was on par with those sold in supermarkets, but at significantly lower prices.-Bernama Next Article Over 10,000 attend Tawau Mega Concert

Perlis Ruler Urges Continued Efforts To Maintain Zero Hardcore Poverty Status

KANGAR, April 22 (Bernama) -- Perlis has achieved zero hardcore poverty status based on the national poverty database e-Kasih as of Dec 31 last year, joining four other states that have successfully eradicated hardcore poverty, said the Raja of Perlis Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail. Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said a range of initiatives and business grants had been provided to communities as a bridge to help them take the first step out of the cycle of poverty. His Royal Highness urged the Menteri Besar, state assemblymen and the Perlis government to keep meeting the people on the ground to make sure hardcore poverty stays at zero and to help the people break free from poverty. 'I also call on all government agencies and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) that have grants or assistance programmes to intensify their efforts, proactively seek out suitable participants interested in starting businesses, and guide them so that together we can further develop our state,' Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin said. His Royal Highness said this when opening the Perlis State Legislative Assembly sitting at the State Assembly Complex here today. Also in attendance was the Raja Perempuan of Perlis Tuanku Tengku Fauziah Almarhum Tengku Abdul Rashid. The Raja Muda of Perlis Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail and Raja Puan Muda Tuanku Dr Hajah Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil were also in attendance. Highlighting the state's progress, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin noted that Perlis has witnessed significant development recently, buoyed by its growing appeal to tourists under the Visit Perlis Year 2024–2025 campaign. Last year alone, Perlis welcomed 2.99 million visitors from within and outside Malaysia, reflecting the remarkable progress of the state's tourism products and industry. 'This growth has had a positive impact on the food and hospitality sectors. I am proud of my subjects who have seized the opportunity to build beautiful and uniquely designed hotels and homestays,' His Royal Highness said.
