Women's Champions League trophy recovered by police after theft

The theft occurred during a league match between Sporting Lisbon and Vitoria Guimaraes on Saturday, but was not reported to police until the following day. "Several individuals wearing balaclavas forced open a gate" in the garage of the stadium, where the tournament's showpiece will be played on May 24, the police said in a statement. In addition to the trophy, other items of equipment belonging to UEFA were also taken. These items, along with the trophy, have since been returned to European football's governing body, a police spokesman told AFP. Thirteen suspects have been identified, according to a police statement, which gave no details of the operation that led to the recovery of the stolen items. The investigation is ongoing and the police said they expect to recover more items and make further arrests in the coming days.

Sporting beat Vitoria to clinch Portuguese title

LISBON :Sporting were crowned Portugal champions after beating Vitoria Guimaraes 2-0 in Primeira Liga on Saturday as both the title race and the relegations were decided on the final match day. Pedro Goncalves put the defending champions in front after 55 minutes before Viktor Gyokeres doubled the advantage late on, sealing the points with a low strike inside the bottom right corner. Sporting finished top of the standings on 82 points, two points above local rivals Benfica who were held to a 1-1 draw at 10-man Sporting Braga in a simultaneous kickoff. Sporting and Benfica played out a 1-1 draw last weekend to stay level on points but Sporting's 1-0 win in the reverse fixture in December meant they held a head-to-head advantage, and only needed to match Benfica's result on final day. Sporting, who became champions for the 21st time, won first consecutive league titles since they claimed four in a row from 1951-54.

Sporting made to wait for title after Benfica earn derby draw

LONDON: Sporting will have to wait until the final day of the Primeira Liga season as they bid to retain their title after being held to a 1-1 draw at second-placed rivals Benfica on Saturday. The Portuguese capital pair started the match level on points but Sporting, with the advantage due to their head-to-head record, edged closer to a 21st league title when Francisco Trincao fired them into the lead after four minutes. Benfica equalised in the 63rd through Kerem Akturkoglu's tap-in from close range after Vangelis Pavlidis sliced through Sporting's defence with a dazzling solo run, bringing the home crowd at the Estadio da Luz back to life. Sporting remain in pole position and will clinch the title by at least matching Benfica's result on the final day. They host Vitoria Guimaraes while Benfica visit Sporting Braga in what will be a dramatic conclusion to the season next Saturday. - Reuters
