Russia intensifies assaults near Dnipropetrovsk Oblast border, Ukraine's military says
Russian forces are ramping up their offensive in southern Ukraine in an attempt to breach the administrative border of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces spokesperson, Vladyslav Voloshyn, said on May 13. Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, a major industrial and logistical hub, remains untouched by ground incursions but is under growing threat. Voloshyn said Russian troops continue to use artillery, kamikaze drones, guided aerial bombs, and unguided missiles to attack Ukrainian positions. "The number of these assault operations is quite high," he said, citing 24 combat engagements in the Novopavlivka direction alone. Novopavlivka lies in central-eastern Ukraine, roughly 130 kilometers (about 80 miles) southeast of Dnipro, near the tri-border area of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. Voloshyn described it as the "most mobile area" on the southern front, where four Russian regiments have concentrated assault units. "They are trying to break through toward the administrative border of Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts," he said, adding that fighting involves small assault groups and constant shelling. The Russian assaults prompted local authorities on April 28 to begin mandatory evacuations of families with children from four frontline villages: Kolona Mezhova, Novopidhorodne, Raipole, and Sukhareva Balka. These settlements lie just 5–15 kilometers from Russian positions. Although Russian troops have not yet entered Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, the region has suffered regular missile, drone, and airstrike attacks that have killed and wounded civilians and damaged critical infrastructure. Russia seeks to create bridgehead to cross Dnipro River, Ukrainian forces say
Russian forces have ramped up their operations in the southern part of the Dnipro River island system in Kherson Oblast, aiming to land on Buhaz Island, establish a bridgehead and cross the Dnipro River. Source: Ukrinform news agency, citing Colonel Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for Defence Forces of Ukraine's South, on the national joint 24/7 newscast Quote: "The enemy is trying to cross the water barriers and has just opened up a front; let's call it a new one. The front where they've intensified their activity and made several attempts to land in the river area over the past few days is in the south of the Dnipro River island system. In the very south, near the village of Kizomys, there is the island of Buhaz. There, the enemy is trying to land on this island, seize a bridgehead and cross the Dnipro River from the south." Details: However, Voloshyn stressed that Russian forces are failing and their attempts are currently fruitless. "Such incidents happen quite often, but I want to assure you that the Ukrainian defence forces are holding the line and trying to repel all enemy attempts to cross the river," he added. Background: Defence Forces of Ukraine's South reported that the situation on the Novopavlivka front has escalated significantly, with Russian troops pushing towards the border of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts. Nearly 105,000 Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine identified by media investigation
Russian independent media outlet, Mediazona, in collaboration with the BBC Russian service, has confirmed the identities of 104,763 Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine. Mediazona's latest report covers the period of February 24, 2022 to April 24, 2025. Since it was last updated in the middle of April, 2,880 additional Russian military personnel have been confirmed killed. The list of deceased Russian military personnel is compiled from verified, publicly available sources, including social media posts, local news reports, and official announcements from regional authorities. However, as the Russian government does not publicly disclose casualty information, journalists note that the total number of casualties is likely higher than reported. The confirmed death toll now includes 25,900 volunteers, 16,500 recruited prisoners, and 11,900 mobilized soldiers, according to the media outlets. Over 4,900 officers have also been confirmed to have been killed. The media outlet publicly the full list of named casualties for the first time in February, commemorating the third-year anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On Feb. 24, independent Russian media outlets Meduza and Mediazona in a report that around 165,000 Russian troops have been killed since the launch of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, including nearly 100,000 in 2024. President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed on Feb. 15 that Moscow had lost around 250,000 soldiers, with 20,000 killed in battles for Russia's Kursk Oblast alone. Russia has gained ground in eastern Ukraine and Kursk Oblast in recent months but at the cost of heavy casualties as well as equipment losses. On April 29, Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces spokesperson, Vladyslav Voloshyn, said that Russian forces have recently intensified offensive operations in three Ukrainian oblasts – Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson. Moscow does not disclose its casualty figures, though a Defense Ministry official let slip in December that the department received 48,000 requests to identify missing soldiers. In an interview with NBC published on Feb. 16, Zelensky said over 46,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed and 380,000 injured on the battlefield. As of March 28, Russia has lost a total of 950,860 troops since the full-scale invasion began, Ukraine's General Staff . The estimate, which is broadly in-line with estimates made by Western intelligence agencies, likely includes those killed, captured, wounded, and missing. Russia intensifies offensive operations in 3 regions, pushes toward Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, Ukraine's military says
Russian forces have recently intensified offensive operations in three Ukrainian oblasts – Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson – Ukraine's Southern Defense Forces spokesperson, Vladyslav Voloshyn, said on April 29 during Ukraine's state-run telethon. The statement follows Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement of a three-day truce in the war against Ukraine to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe on May 8-11. Russian forces have intensified their push toward Novopavlivka, a village in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast, which borders Donetsk Oblast, according to Voloshyn, conducting 23 combat engagements over the past day in the area. "Fierce fighting continues there, and the enemy is rushing to the border of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Donetsk oblasts," Voloshyn said. While Donetsk Oblast has been the epicenter of Russia's aggression against Ukraine since 2014 — with significant escalation after the full-scale invasion in 2022 – Russian forces have not yet entered Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. The distance between Novopavlivka and the village of Kotliarivka in Donetsk Oblast, where fighting is ongoing between Russian and Ukrainian troops, is nearly 12 kilometers (8 miles). Voloshyn added that the situation is "quite turbulent" in the Orikhiv direction in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, near the settlements of Mali Shcherbaky, Lobkove, and Stepove. "The enemy is trying to break through the line of contact there, reach the bridgehead and capture it, which is not far from Zaporizhzhia. From there, they (Russian forces) can exert fire on our logistics routes that go from Zaporizhzhia to the east of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and to shell Zaporizhzhia itself and its suburbs," Voloshyn said. According to the spokesperson, the situation has also deteriorated in the Kherson sector of the front line, where Russian troops have made more frequent attempts to seize islands on the Dnipro River. Though Ukrainian forces sank most Russian boats, some Russian soldiers managed to land on the islands, he added. "(Russian soldiers) cannot be evacuated from there, and their command is dropping ammunition, water, and food from drones. They stay there for several days. There are cases where they even surrender to our forces," Voloshyn said. Russians push towards border of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts – Ukraine's defence forces
The situation on the Novopavlivka front has escalated significantly, with Russian troops pushing towards the border of three oblasts. Source: Vladyslav Voloshyn, spokesperson for defence forces of Ukraine's south, as reported by Ukrinform Quote: "The situation on the Novopavlivka front has significantly escalated; the enemy engaged in 23 combat clashes over the past day. Fierce fighting is ongoing there, with the enemy literally pushing towards the border of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Donetsk oblasts. In addition, the situation remains rather tense on the Orikhiv front, particularly near the settlements of Mali Shcherbaky, Lobkove and Stepove. The enemy is attempting to break through the line of contact there, to reach and seize a bridgehead. This area is not far from Zaporizhzhia, and from there, they could launch fire attacks on our logistics routes stretching from the city of Zaporizhzhia to the east of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and also attack Zaporizhzhia itself and its outskirts." Details: Voloshyn also noted that the situation on the Prydniprovske (Kherson) front has also escalated over the past few days. On the Kherson front, attempts by the Russians to seize islands on the Dnipro River have become more frequent. Although the defence forces manage to destroy most Russian watercraft, some Russian troops manage to land on the islands. Quote: "There, the enemy leaves one or two men at a time on those islands. They play at castaways there. They cannot be evacuated, so their command drops ammunition, water and food to them by drone. They stay there for several days, and there have even been cases when they surrender to our forces. Russian propaganda presents these instances as efforts to establish control over the island zone. But there have been more such attempts in recent days." Details: Voloshyn also voiced concern over the Russian double-tap strikes on Kherson with guided aerial bombs, followed by artillery and drone attacks. Quote: "…the enemy is using such a vile tactic: first, it launches bomb attacks, and when rescue workers and emergency services arrive, artillery strikes follow shortly after. The enemy fires artillery and deploys kamikaze drones targeting the very services conducting evacuation and rescue operations. The day before yesterday, there was one such case, and today the enemy carried out a similar strike using three guided aerial bombs." Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!
