Academic Notebook: Scholarship recipients
Mar. 30—Niko Sicotte, of Oronoco, was recently recognized as the local level winner of the Voice of Democracy contest for VFW Post 9647 in Oronoco. Sicotte earned a $40 scholarship prize. Sicotte is a senior at Century High School. Zoe Njus, of Pine Island, recently participated in the University of Dubuque's Second Century Scholars Day. She earned the Distinguished Scholar Award of $1,500 for the 2025-2026 academic year. Njus is a senior at Pine Island High School.

Troy VFW honors students, teacher for academic work
Mar. 14—The warm relationship between the Troy VFW and Troy Public Schools continued last week when some amazing students and teachers were recognized Thursday, March 6 for their accomplishments. Winners of the local Patriot's Pen and Voice of Democracy writing contest were honored with pins and cash rewards for their essays. Established in 1947, the VFW's Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 ninth through 12th grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $1 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program. Also, nearly 68,800 students in sixth through eighth grades also compete. For Troy's Junior High winners, Adelyn Cox, Cragar Davis and Brookelynn Bowers were able to share how their voice is important to American democracy. Cox won first prize in the Troy competition and went on to win second place in the district competition. High school winners of the Voice of Democracy Christina Hammer and Jenika Meyer had to write an essay and submit an audio recording analyzing "Is America today our forefathers' vision?" All students who participated in the competition were given a cash reward from the VFW members. In addition to student awards, the VFW was able to honor Troy educator Mel Roesler-Begalke. She was nominated by the W.F. Morrison Elementary Student Council for being an amazing teacher that loves and cares for everyone. Ms. Mel, who teaches Transitional Kindergarten, has also been recognized as an "Outstanding Teacher" by the University of Montana Western and had Gov. Bullock visit her classroom to observe her successful early literacy program. Such prestigious accolades landed Ms. Mel as a winner at the VFW district level. She was presented with a plaque and check by VFW Members Jerry Erickson and Amy Snow. "It is a much deserved award for a teacher that pours her whole heart into teaching," Troy Public Schools Superintendent Christina Schertel said. "Troy Public Schools is grateful to the Troy VFW for all their support of the school, students and staff over the last several are true American heroes who continue to give back to their communities."
