Binghamton Move Out Project wins Volunteer Recognition Award
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – An effort to support the needy while keeping perfectly good items out of the landfill has received some special recognition. The Conrad and Virginia Klee Foundation held its annual grantee reception last week at the Phelps Mansion Museum. During the event, Klee gave its Volunteer Recognition Award to the Binghamton Move Out Project. The all volunteer non-profit collected unwanted items from Binghamton University students as they leave their dorms or off-campus housing at the end of the school year. Johnson City native Christina Fuller founded the organization while she was a Junior at BU in 2018. 'We work so hard. The Move Out Project, it's a lot of work, but we know that we're doing good work. To be in a room with a bunch of other leaders in the community who are also doing wonderful work. Some of them are even donation partners of ours, it feels so good to be recognized,' said Fuller. Fuller says the Move Out Project works with about 30 other local organizations, such as the Children's Home and the American Civic Association, to distribute the goods. She says they collect mostly clothing but also some furniture, small appliances and even food. Klee Executive Director Amanda McIntyre says Move Out's 140 volunteers do impressive work. 'We can all give something, whether it's a check or it's your time, we all have something to give. We can all do it together so no matter what chaos is happening beyond this community, there's a lot we can do to make it a better place to call home,' said McIntyre. Klee also gave the Move Out Project a $2,500 grant. Klee is also offering Community Change Maker micro-grants. Binghamton runner participating in NYC Marathon, raising money for charity
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A Binghamton woman is raising money for veterans as she trains for New York's greatest race. Stephanie Olson has been a lifelong athlete, playing soccer since she was five years old. When Olson started attending Binghamton University, she fell in love with running. Now, she's training for the 2025 New York City marathon. Olson started preparing for the race six months age. Throughout her training, she is raising money for the Tunnel to Towers Foundation which provides financial help to veterans and first responders. Olson's father is a disabled veteran who served in Desert Storm and her cousin was a firefighter in 9/11. She says a hero is someone who does what they can and it's important to recognize their efforts. 'I think it's important to memorialize these people and support the people who are still alive because they need as much support as they can get. I really appreciate all of the things that people like the military and first responders do for people,' said Olson. Olson has a goal of raising $5,000 for the charity. Jablon Studios hosts Easter egg hunt
VESTAL, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local artist is making use of her new studio space by hosting an all-inclusive Easter egg hunt. Public artist and Owner of Jablon Studios Emily Jablon hosted an Easter egg hunt Monday morning at her new art studio, located inside of Vestal Center Park. Children and families from across the community were invited to come hunt for eggs, meet the Easter bunny, and check out the new space. The eggs contained candy, money, and in true Jablon Studios fashion, gems, diamonds, and bling. Jablon says as a public artist, she's always looking for new ways to incorporate the community into her art. 'It's a fun way to celebrate the Easter season, but it's also a good way to get people to check out my new studio, see what we do here, invite more local organizations to see what we do and what we offer and just have fun with the public in an artsy kind of way,' said Jablon. Jablon says this was the first of many events she plans to host in the park. Jablon specializes in glass mosaic art, including public murals and smaller pieces like ornaments. Jablon Studios offers art classes for all skill levels. Open studio hours are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5 p.m. to 8 and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 3 p.m. Parties and group events are also offered. Juveniles involved in alleged reckless driving incident in Town of Fenton
TOWN OF FENTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – The Broome County Sheriff's Office is currently investigating a one-vehicle accident involving juveniles in the Town of Fenton. On April 19, at around 6:46 p.m., deputies from the Sheriff's Office responded to an accident on Interstate Route 88 East near Exit 3. Upon arrival, deputies found a juvenile passenger from the crashed vehicle. The passenger was alert and conscious after having crawled out of the wreck. A bystander was administering care. The deputy located the crashed vehicle on an embankment, having rolled onto its roof. The juvenile driver was still trapped inside. Using a pocketknife, the responding deputy cut the driver's seat belt and pulled the juvenile out of the vehicle as emergency medical staff arrived at the scene. Both the driver and passenger were transported to UHS Wilson Medical Center for their injuries. An investigation determined that the driver had been driving recklessly at a high rate of speed before crashing into the right side of an embankment near Exit 3 on I-88 Eastbound. The driver was issued several traffic violations. The accident is still under investigation.
