WGA East Seals Tentative Deal With Vox Media Management, Narrowly Avoiding Strike

The Writers Guild of America East narrowly avoided a strike against Vox Media, announcing a tentative new three-year deal with management in the early hours of Friday morning. The current contract was set to expire at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, and the union had already authorized a strike a few hours prior. The union says that details on the contract will be released upon ratification. AI, increased wages and benefits, and additional severance and layoff procedures were among the priorities during this bargaining cycle. There have been multiple rounds of layoffs at Vox Media recently, including in January when the company let go of around 7% of its workforce. The news of this deal comes just over a month after Vox Media sold video game website Polygon to Valnet, which currently owns several entertainment-related aggregation sites including Screen Rant, Game Rant, and Comic Book Resources. That movie also reportedly resulted in mass layoffs at the site, prompting an outcry from the union. 'It is hard to fathom management's commitment to its workers and its readers when this marks the fifth round of layoffs in just the last six months,' the WGAE statement said at the time. The Vox Media Union represents workers across The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Pop Sugar, Thrillist, Vox Media Podcast Network and The Dodo. Vox Media Union Reaches Agreement on Three-Year Contract

Vox Media's union employees will not hit the picket line for now: On Friday morning, the union said it had reached a tentative three-year agreement with the digital media company after an overnight bargaining session. 'As a deal has now been reached, there will not be any pickets outside Vox Media's office in New York,' the union said Friday. The tentative deal covers about 250 writers and other editorial workers represented by the Writers Guild of America East. Union members and the WGAE Council's Online Media sector representatives will vote to ratify the contract in the coming days. The union said full details of the agreement will be released upon ratification. Union leadership said the top concerns for a new deal included proposals on pay, AI protections, benefits, and assurances for severance and layoff procedures. Vox Media, like many other media companies, has implemented multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years, most recently with a third wave of job cuts in January within a brief succession of weeks. Vox Media at one point had about 2,000 employees but that number has shrunk with the job cuts. In 2019 the company acquired New York Media, publisher of New York Magazine, in an all-stock deal designed to gain synergies of scale. Two years later, Vox Media merged with Group Nine Media, a digital media roll-up venture whose backers had included Discovery. Vox Media Union Members Vote to Authorize Strike With Midnight Deadline

Members of the Writers Guild East-affiliated Vox Media Union have voted to authorize its leaders to order a strike against the media company at 11:59 p.m. Eastern on Thursday if a deal on a new labor contract is not reached. Ninety percent of the 250-member bargaining unit voted in favor of the strike authorization. The unit includes editorial staffers at The Verge, Eater, SB Nation, Pop Sugar, Thrillist, Vox Media Podcast Network and The Dodo. If a strike is ordered, WGA East plans to hold picket lines outside Vox's Broad Street headquarters in New York. 'Writers Guild members at Vox Media would much rather end the week with a fair and equitable contract than with a strike,' WGAE President Lisa Takeuchi Cullen said in a statement. 'The union and our allies are ready to support the Vox Media Union should they be forced to strike because management refuses to reach an agreement that meets members' very reasonable demands.' While not providing specifics on contract language, the Vox Media Union says it seeks protection for its members against abuse of artificial intelligence, as well as minimum compensation and annual raises 'that reflect today's economy and cost of living,' improved severance benefits and layoff procedures. Various unions have voiced their support for Vox Media, including a joint statement signed by the players associations for a variety of sports leagues covered by Vox's websites, including those for MLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, MLS, WNBA, and NWSL, among others. The AFL-CIO and New York City Central Labor Council also supported a campaign that sent a letter to Vox's leadership with more than 3,000 union members signing.
