West Coast Eagles recall Bo Allen for second AFL match against Geelong Cats on Sunday, but drop Tom Gross
Bo Allan will return to West Coast's side for Sunday night's clash with Geelong, but the Eagles' top draftee is set for a role on the wing. Allan will play his second match at the level in the WA Day eve fixture, edging fellow first-year gun Tom Gross out of the side. Gross is one of three outs from the Eagles' side that lost to Adelaide by 66 points at the weekend, joining Jake Waterman (shoulder) and forward-ruck Bailey Williams (managed). Allan will play his second game and first since he was suspended on debut for an incident with former Melbourne captain Jack Viney in his long-awaited debut in round eight. It was the latest in a series of interruptions for the No.16 pick in last year's draft, with two separate bouts of illness costing him an earlier debut. Allan is joined by forward-ruck Jack Williams — who is fresh of kicking four goals in the WAFL — and 203cm forward Archer Reid in coming into the team to face the fifth-placed Cats. It means Eagles fans will have to wait to see fellow 2024 draftee Jobe Shanahan who was listed as an emergency alongside Hamish Davis and Gross. West Coast coach Andrew McQualter hinted that Allan — who had spent the pre-season playing at half-back — could be set for a role on the wing after playing there for the Eagles' reserves against West Perth at the weekend. 'We did play Bo on the wing in the WAFL last week, so we're keen to explore a bit of mid, wing, half-back for him,' McQualter said. Eagles WAFL coach Kyal Horsley praised Allan for his 15-disposal outing against the Falcons. 'Bo played with a tenacity and physicality which stood out in the conditions,' Horsley told the club website. 'He had some explosive moments where he opened the game up for us.' Williams also returns for the first time since the loss to the Demons last month and will likely back up Matt Flynn in the ruck. Archer Reid played the first nine games of the year but was managed ahead of the win over St Kilda and returned through the WAFL last week. The 19-year-old key forward is set to play as the second tall forward alongside co-captain Oscar Allen in the absence of Waterman. Geelong have made only the one change, resting Jed Bews with Connor O'Sullivan coming into the 23. West Coast Eagles team news: Jobe Shanahan in contention for AFL debut, named in squad to face Geelong
West Coast could be set to unveil their sixth debutant this season after naming draftee Jobe Shanahan in an extended squad for their clash against Geelong at Optus Stadium on Sunday night. Shanahan — who was taken with pick No.30 in last year's draft — is one of five potential inclusions alongside fellow first-year Eagles Bo Allan and Hamish Davis. Forward-ruck Jack Williams is also a chance to return after kicking four goals in the WAFL loss to West Perth at the weekend, second-year forward Archer May has been named at centre-half-forward. The Eagles will make at least two changes from the side that lost to Adelaide by 66 points on Sunday with spearhead Jake Waterman's season over because of a serious shoulder injury, while the club says forward-ruck Bailey Williams is being managed. Shanahan is the big inclusion, with the 195cm teenager a chance to come in to bolster the Eagles' defence as they prepare to take on Coleman Medal leader Jeremy Cameron and 203 WA product Shannon Neale. The Bendigo Under-18 product was drafted mainly as a forward, having kicked 42 goals in 20 games across various levels last year including 11 in three VFL games for Essendon. But Shanahan was sent into defence for the Eagles' WAFL side last week as they look to cover the extensive injuries to their backline depth led by vice-captain and five-time All-Australian Jeremy McGovern (concussion). Top draftee Allan is a chance to return since he was suspended on debut in the round eight loss to Melbourne at Optus Stadium, while wingman Hamish Davis could be in line for his fifth game and first since round seven. Geelong have added three players including defender and rising star fancy Connor O'Sullivan, Oliver Wiltshire and potential debutant George Stevens. Brownlow contender Bailey Smith has been named in the midfield amid conjecture he may not make the trip west. Both teams will be trimmed to the final 23 on Friday afternoon. AFL mid-season draft: Essendon pick two talls as West Coast takes Tom McCarthy with first pick
Essendon has picked two towering talls in a bid for a mid-season draft cure to their injury woes. The injury-hit Bombers were the busiest club with four selections at Wednesday night's mid-season rookie draft. While 10 clubs with no vacant list spot didn't have a pick, the Bombers went hard to address a concerning injury list featuring 10 players who are 190cm or taller. Essendon picked Archie May, a 198cm-tall forward from WAFL club Subiaco, with its first selection and pick six overall. The Bombers followed by taking 203cm ruckman Lachlan Blakiston from East Fremantle (pick 13). Essendon then promoted small goalsneak Oscar Smart from their VFL outfit and plucked forward Liam McMahon, who was Carlton's VFL captain. West Coast, with the first pick of the draft, signed Tom McCarthy from Richmond's VFL ranks. Just two years ago, the 24-year-old was playing division two amateurs in Victoria's Southern League. "I've definitely come from kind of nowhere," McCarthy said. "I feel so privileged that I'll get to live my dream … I'm super pumped to get started." North Melbourne used pick two on Werribee small forward Zac Banch, who in round six equalled the all-time VFL record for score assists with eight. "He gets up the ground and then he's a bit of a handful when he's streaming back to goal," North's recruiting manager Will Thursfield said. "He's very clean, he's very crafty, he doesn't need much time to make his decisions and he's a very nice kick of the footy." Port selected towering 202cm defender Harrison Ramm from reigning SANFL premiers Glenelg at pick four. Another Werribee product, Flynn Young, was taken by Carlton at pick five and Glenelg lost another key backman when Oscar Allen, who has previously been on St Kilda's list, joined Gold Coast at pick seven. Collingwood chose utility Roan Steele from West Perth, while West Coast added SANFL outfit Norwood's Jacob Newton with pick nine. The Kangaroos signed Cooper Trembath from their VFL ranks to round out the top 10, as 18 players were selected overall. Experienced AFL duo Adam Tomlinson and Brandon Parfitt were overlooked. AAP
