Roar straight to the top
Reigning premiers Western Roar cemented the WA Netball League minor premiership with one round to play after defeating a dogged West Coast Warriors 49-41 in round 13 last week. Roar were disciplined from end to end in the first and final quarters to cemented the win. Some quick work in goals by Warriors Jamaica Jauncey (29) and Hana Stokes (11) brought West Coast into the game following quarter time but Roar's Sophia Lamers (34) and Asha Parsons (15) were too formidable to overcome as they sealed top spot. The Comets moved into second spot on the ladder on Wednesday night following their 66-61 defeat of the Fremantle Sharks, with the Demons clash with Peel Lightning taking place two days later in the marquee Friday night timeslot. Sharks' trio Kasey Ridout (29), Mwai Kumwenda (17) and Sophie Eastaugh (13) are becoming increasingly in tune with one another but Comets Jasmah Haywood (36), Sloan Burton (17) and Madeleine Ash (13) all had solid performances in goals to secure the vital win. The Demons could have regained second spot on the ladder on Friday thanks to a superior percentage but could only hold fifth-placed Peel Lightning to 46-46 draw. Lightning surged out to a seven-goal lead in the first term and maintained a four-goal lead at half-time before the Demons fought back in the second half but they could not snatch the win. Chelsea Cook led the way for the Lightning with 23 goals, supported by Marene Peyper (18) and Rebecca Lill (five), while Kelsey McPhee shot 26 for the Demons with Georgia Ettridge (12), Brooke Marques (three) and Meg Gallager (five) all chiming in. Last-placed Rangers fell heart-breakingly short of their first win of the season against the team just above them on the ladder, Souwest Jets, losing by just one goal, 47-46 The Rangers got off to a strong start in the first quarter with Aisha Morcombe (32), Emily Cramond (11) and 21/U athlete Jade Dime (three) sharing the goals. But Jets players stepped up to secure their second win of the season, with Lily Gilsenan shooting 28, including the winning goal, and Meretini Fuimaono scoring 19.

Reigning premiers Roar back
Reigning premiers Western Roar returned to their devastating best with an 83-24 thrashing of bottom-of-the-table Rangers in round 12 of the WA Netball League. Roar went into the First Nations Round - which recognises and celebrates the histories, cultures and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in netball - on the back of a loss and draw in the past two weeks. But Roar's skills were back on display, with Caitlyn Brown's ability to read the play and anticipate the ball shutting down the Rangers. Your local paper, whenever you want it. Demons Kelsey McPhee (23), Georgia Ettridge (13), Meg Gallager (seven) and Brooke Marques (three) fought hard in the circle. The Comets are now just percentage behind the Demons in second place with two games to go following a 52-48 win over Peel Lightning. After a third quarter fightback from the Lightning, the Comets solidified their lead in a strong final term, with their shooting end of Jasmah Haywood (31), Sloan Burton (15) and Madeleine Ash (six) breaking through in the final five minutes. Credit: James Worsfold The Fremantle Sharks kept their slim hopes of a top-four finish alive with a big 77-42 win over Souwest Jets. The Jets high rotation of players on the court led to inconsistency, with young gun Lily Knight the saving grace for the team, shooting 28 goals. The Sharks' mid-court of Numi Tupaea, Jessica Reppacholi and Indiana Squiers provided crucial options around the circle, while their shooting end of Sophie Eastaugh (28), Kasey Ridout (26) and Mwai Kumwenda (23) all had an influence.

Southside bury their demons with win
The Southside Demons bounced back from their loss last week to defeat the Fremantle Sharks 59-49 in round nine action of the WA Netball League. It was neck-and-neck in the first half, with the Sharks going into the main break up by one, but a fired-up Demons came out after half-time with renewed fire to dominate. The Demons chose to share their shooting responsibilities around, including captain Meg Gallager in her 100th WANL games. For the Sharks, it was once again all about Kasey Ridout, the goal shooter hitting 40 goals. The undefeated Western Roar remain the team to beat but Peel Lightning took it right up to the reigning premiers before going down 50-42. Lightning's Marene Peyper shot 10 goals in her 100th WANL game, while Roar vice captain Caitlyn Brown was a defensive wall alongside Chelsea Barlett. Comets 71 defeat Souwest Jets 42 Comets Jasmah Haywood (31) and Sloan Burton (26) had a night out in goals, joined by Madeleine Ash (14), as they put a gap between fifth place with a 71-42 thrashing of the Souwest Jets. Jets 21/U athlete Lily Knight continues to shine, shooting 17 goals at the higher level. West Coast Warriors remain in third place after easily accounting for bottom-of-the-table Rangers 62-33 Abbey Hicks (13), Emily Cramond (11) and Aisha Morcombe (nine) were all standouts for the young Ranger side, but it wasn't enough against the strength of the Warriors side. Jamaica Jauncey scored an incredible 51 goals and the Warriors remain just two points behind second-placed Demons with with a higher percentage.
