Little River shooting suspect was a member of the U.S. Navy, commander confirms

CONWAY, S.C. (WBTW) — It's been more than a week since a gunman opened fire at a chartered party boat in Little River during Memorial Day Weekend, injuring at least 11 people. More details have been released about the 19-year-old suspect arrested states away. U.S. Navy Records confirm Shawon Shamarion Williams, who was arrested outside the Great Lakes Naval Base in Lake County, Illinois, was a member of the Navy, and had enlisted on June 6, 2023. According to public Facebook posts from his mother, Jacklyn Bellamy, Williams enlisted just days after graduating from North Myrtle Beach High School. Commander Jessica L. McNulty, spokesperson for the U.S. Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery, released the following statement to WBTW reporters: 'We can confirm that Hull Maintenance Technician Seaman (HTSN) Shawon Williams, assigned to Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command Great Lakes, was arrested by the Naval Criminal Investigative Service on May 29, 2025. NCIS transferred custody of this Sailor to local authorities.' As of Monday morning, Williams is awaiting transportation from the Lake County Jail to the Jay Reuben Long Detention Facility, according to Deputy Chief Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff's Office. Williams's mother, Bellamy hosted the party where the shooting occurred. Her Facebook page says she is from Longs. WBTW reporters found an address listed under her name on public records, but nobody was home, and it looked like nobody had been for a long time. WBTW reporters have been attempting to contact Bellamy since Thursday, when she told reporters in regards to her son, 'He is innocent, that's all.' The Horry County Police Department said more arrests could be made in connection with the shooting. * * * Shelby Martin is a multimedia journalist who joined the News13 team in May 2025. Partly sunny, then evening stray showers

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)– Happy first day of June! Temperatures are chilly this morning in the upper-50s and lower-60s. We gradually warm into the lower and mid-80s by the afternoon. We will see a mix of sun and clouds, making for partly sunny skies for the first half of Sunday. A small chance for a stray shower or two is possible later this afternoon and evening. Some NC counties and parts of the Pee Dee are in a level 1 of 5, Marginal Risk for severe weather. The biggest threats being strong wind gusts. Not everyone will see this chance, most look to stay mainly dry. We'll see a decrease in cloud coverage as we head into the overnight hours. Tonight lows will stay near normal and dip into the mid and upper-60s. The start of your new work week will be dry, with lots of sunshine. A chance for showers and storms arrives by the end of the week. Temperatures will start near normal, then quickly warm to above average with many in the Pee Dee forecasted to see lower-90s by the weekend. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. The Crystal Apple: Stephanie Byrdic-Daniels

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW) — Education is the cornerstone of a society, and as populations and technology become more advanced, teachers often lead the way. Each month, WBTW and Ultimate California Pizza will recognize an educator for making a difference in their classroom and community. This month's winner is Stephanie Brydic-Daniels. Stephanie is a Grand Strand native. She grew up in Andrews, South Carolina, and graduated from the University of South Carolina with a degree in psychology. A background in therapeutic counseling gave her the skills necessary to help teens in crisis as a school counselor. 'We are the calm within their storm, and we are trained to be calm when they are not,' she said of her role. As the lead counselor at Myrtle Beach High School, Stephanie sees firsthand the triumphs and troubles of teenage students. She knows problems at home can follow kids into the classroom, and says teachers are often the first ones to spot the warning signs. One of the biggest problems she encounters is cyberbullying, coupled with unrealistic expectations that kids often see online. 'The things that students see, the perception they have of other people is not reality,' she said. 'We know that it plays on their mental health, and students don't really see how it's impacting them on a daily basis.' The veteran counselor has noticed that new rules banning cell phones in class have inspired students to replace social media with social engagement. 'We are seeing more interactions, we're seeing them check out books,' Stephanie said. 'We're seeing them talk to each other more, which I think is improving their mental health because they're making more connections.' Stephanie said her ultimate goal is to prepare teenagers for the realities of adulthood so they can become contributing members of society. 'We want them to have a positive impact on this world,' she said. 'We see how special each one of them is, and we want the world to see that, too.' Those are just some of the reasons that Stephanie Byrdic-Daniels is this month's winner of the Crystal Apple Award. Horry County authorities seize 25 pounds of fentanyl after pursuit, crash on Highway 17 Bypass

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Horry County authorities seized more than 25 pounds of fentanyl with a street value of more than $1 million Thursday afternoon after a pursuit that ended with a crash near Pine Island Road in Myrtle Beach. Charges are pending against the driver, who was hurt and taken to the hospital after crashing into other vehicles, Horry County police said Friday morning in a Facebook post. At least one bystander was hurt. The incident began at about 4 p.m. when an officer tried to stop a pickup truck for traffic violations near Fantasy Harbor Boulevard and Forestbrook Road. Police said the driver fled and 'was seen repeatedly throwing packages from the window of the vehicle' and 'driving erratically' during the pursuit. Police were able to retrieve the items that were thrown from the vehicle, which amounted to 25.3 pounds of fentanyl. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, one kilogram of the drug can produce up to 1.5 pill dosages and has the potential to kill 500,000 people. 'Long story short — a lot of people could and would be harmed if these drugs were left out in the community,' HCPD said in the Facebook post. A South Carolina Department of Transportation traffic camera showed emergency crews on the scene and the northbound lanes of Highway 17 Bypass blocked near Harrelson Boulevard and the Coastal Grand Mall. 📲 Download the News13 app to stay updated on the go📧 Sign up for WBTW email alerts to have breaking news sent to your inbox.💻 for the Grand Strand and Pee Dee. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13.
