India defeated South Africa by 7 runs in Barbados on June 29, 2024, to win the T20 World Cup title and end the 11-year-long wait for an ICC title. India's historic win over the Proteas at Kensington Oval was celebrated by fans around the world, and according to Indian captain Rohit Sharma, former skipper and legendary wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni video-called to congratulate the team on their memorable win.
In a recent interview with Vimal Kumar, Rohit was asked about his bond with Dhoni and if he had a conversation with him about the T20 World Cup title win; he said, 'Unka message aaya tha jeetne ke baad, reply kiya maine. Unhone video call kiya actually, team mei kisi ko video call kiya tha jab hum udhar the West Indies mei, aur unhone video call mei thumbs up kiya, Well done."

Post India's T20 World Cup title win, Dhoni also shared a Instagram post which read, 'WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS heart rate was up,well done on being calm, having the self belief and doing what u guys all the Indians back home and everywhere in the world a big thank you for bringing the World Cup thanks for the priceless birthday gift."
Rohit is only the second Indian captain after Dhoni to win the T20 World Cup. Dhoni was the captain of the Indian team that won the inaugural edition of the T20 World Cup in 2007. In the final played on September 24, 2007, at The Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, India defeated Pakistan by five runs. Rohit was part of the Indian team in that tournament and played a big role in the team's title win.
In the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit led India from the front and finished as the team's leading run getter. He, however, failed to do much with the bat in the summit clash.
After becoming only the third Indian captain to win an ICC title, Rohit led India to the Champions Trophy title win as well in March 2025. In the final of the 2025 Champions Trophy played at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on March 9, India defeated New Zealand by four wickets. Rohit opened the innings for India in the 252-run chase and, with the help of seven fours and three sixes, scored 76 runs from 83 balls.
For his super show in the summit clash, Rohit won the Player of the Match award. The 38-year-old right-handed batter is the only captain in history to reach the final of all four ICC tournaments.
