A promising tip fizzles as the manhunt for a convicted killer and chronic escapee intensifies

A double murderer and a repeat escapee have managed to evade capture for almost two weeks – leading authorities to believe the fugitives could be anywhere. As of early Wednesday, Antoine Massey and Derrick Groves were still on the run – 12 days after they and eight other inmates broke out of the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans. The eight other fugitives have been caught – mostly in New Orleans. But two of the most recent arrests happened in Texas. Now, several states are involved in the manhunt for Massey and Groves. A glimmer of hope emerged Tuesday when someone reported a possible sighting of Massey around 8:30 a.m. in Natchez, Mississippi, Police Chief Cal Green said, according to CNN affiliate WDSU. Natchez is in Adams County, about 135 miles north of New Orleans. But that hope faded by Tuesday night. 'We do not believe that the suspect is in our area,' Adams County Sheriff Travis Patten said, according to WDSU. 'That's not to say he wasn't here, but we are saying he is not here now.' Massey was most recently charged with vehicle theft and domestic abuse involving strangulation, Orleans Parish records reveal. But the 32-year-old has a long track record of escaping custody. In 2007, he broke out of a New Orleans juvenile detention center after being arrested on suspicion of armed robbery and aggravated assault, according to A broken lock at the detention center allowed Massey, then 15, and five other juveniles to access metal shackles, which they used to shatter a window and escape, reported. Massey stayed on the run for more than two weeks before authorities found him on an interstate in east New Orleans. Massey has also cut off electronic ankle monitors twice, said Matt Dennis, an employee with the company that operates the monitors, according to WDSU. Court records from late 2023 say Massey had 'tampered and/or removed the court-ordered GPS monitor.' Dennis said he was 'astonished' that someone with Massey's escape history was being held on the first floor of the New Orleans jail – a floor that had defective door locks. 'There isn't an ounce of this man's history that doesn't say 'escape,'' Dennis told CNN affiliate WVUE. Groves, 27, was convicted of murdering two men on Mardi Gras 2018. Groves was found to be one of the gunmen who opened fire with AK-47-style assault rifles 'on what should have been a joyous Mardi Gras family gathering,' the district attorney's office said. Groves was found guilty of two counts of second-degree murder and two counts of attempted second-degree murder, charges that carry a life sentence, the district attorney said. Authorities have 'a lot of leads' and are getting tips from the community, Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams said Tuesday. 'It's vitally important that we catch these fugitives, whether it's Arkansas, whether it's Louisiana. But it's also critically important that we know how they got out and who helped them get out, and we can't wait until they're in custody to do that,' Williams said. 'My office, the digital forensics team, has been scouring through hours and hours of jail calls using some AI software to figure out who they were in contact with the night before, hours before, to figure out where they may have been heading,' Williams said. 'Their circle is tightening, as people who are assisting are being arrested.' CNN's Karina Tsui, Matt Rehbein, Chris Lau and Cindy Von Quednow contributed to this report.

Inmates facing murder charges among 11 escapees from New Orleans prison

Eleven prisoners, several of them facing murder charges, have escaped a New Orleans jail, authorities say. The inmates are thought to have fled around midnight, and were discovered missing during a headcount at 08:30 local time (13:30 GMT) at the Orleans Parish Jail on Friday morning. One inmate was apprehended in New Orleans' French Quarter, police said. The escaped inmates are considered "armed and dangerous", the Orleans Parish Sheriff's office said, adding that a search was underway. Louisiana State Police identified one escapee as Kendall Myles in downtown New Orleans through facial recognition technology after he was caught on a surveillance camera. He tried to flee on foot before being apprehended "without further incident", the police force said. While authorities are yet to say how the inmates escaped, WDSU, an affiliate of NBC, reported they dug a hole possibly under a toilet. The BBC has not verified that account. New Orleans police chief Anne Kirkpatrick said the prisoner escape was an "urgent and serious situation" and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity. Victims of some of the escapees have been notified, she said, adding that several are facing murder and other violent charges. The inmates probably had help, Supt Kirkpatrick said, and are unlikely to still be wearing prison uniforms, warning that anyone who helped the inmates would be charged. The FBI and US Marshals have also joined local police in the search, she added. The Orleans Parish Jail is located near the centre of the city, around 3 km (2 miles) from the city's famous French Quarter. 11 inmates escape from Orleans Parish jail in Louisiana

Eleven inmates escaped from the Orleans Parish Justice Center in New Orleans, authorities said Friday. Officials discovered the inmates missing during a routine head count around 8:30 a.m. Friday, Sheriff Susan Hutson said at an afternoon news conference, calling it a "very serious and unacceptable situation." Photos released by the sheriff's office show the inside of a cell where the escape is believed to have happened. A large hole was cut behind a toilet with phrases such as "We Innocent" and "Too Easy LOL" written above it. Chief Christopher Goodly with the sheriff's office Field Operations Bureau said the inmates who breached or escaped custody should be considered armed and dangerous. Jail records show that at least four of the escaped inmates are charged with murder or attempted murder. Charges for the others include aggravated assault with a firearm, armed robbery with a firearm, armed false imprisonment, battery and drug offenses. At least one of the escapees, Kendall Myles, has been apprehended. State police shared a photo of Myles in police car after he was captured in the French Quarter following a brief foot pursuit. He was found hiding beneath a car at the Hotel Monteleone parking garage, the sheriff's office. Myles faces a new charge of simple escape. Myles, 20, escaped the Bridge City Center in 2022, NBC affiliate WDSU of New Orleans reported. He was indicted in an attempted murder and carjacking case after he and an accomplice were accused of robbing a 59-year-old man, the district attorney's office said in a September 2022 news release. Authorities said Myles allegedly shot the man twice before taking his car, the release stated. "Thank you to Troop NOLA for their diligence and speed in apprehending the first escapee," Gov. Jeff Landry said in a post Friday on X. "To the other 10: YOU ARE NEXT!" Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said her office was calling for an investigation and will "do whatever it takes" to determine what happened. "Someone clearly dropped the ball and there's no excuse for this," she wrote in a post on X. "I am calling for a full investigation — This is beyond unacceptable, and once these offenders are back in custody, there must be real accountability." The sheriff's office said it was working with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies "in a full-scale search operation." Hutson told the public not to engage with or approach the inmates. "We are urging the public to remain alert," she said. This article was originally published on
