On May 17, police in West Virginia responded to an incident involving the retired Olympic gymnast, 57, after receiving reports of a Porsche with a Texas license plate driving 'all over the roadway,' near downtown Fairmont, WDTV reported Monday, May 26, citing court documents. Retton was found in her car in a Marion County AutoZone parking lot with a screw-top bottle of wine in her passenger seat when officers approached her, according to the news station, citing court documents. Police also claimed the sports star slurred her words as she spoke to them and was issued three standard field sobriety tests, which detected she was impaired, WDTV reported. Retton refused to have her blood tested for alcohol, per the AP. She was arrested that same day on one count of "driving under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs; penalties." Retton was issued a personal recognizance bond of $1,500, which she posted that same day. PEOPLE did not immediately receive a response from Retton's representatives. The West Virginia native made history at just 16 years old when she made history at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles by becoming the first American female gymnast to win an individual all-around gold medal. She shares four daughters — Shayla, McKenna, Skyla and Emma — with her ex-husband, Shannon Kelley. "I put my four daughters into a sport that I love. It's woven into every fabric of my being. We're a gymnastics family,' the Dancing with the Stars alum told Today in 2019. 'Three stuck with it, one was a cheerleader. Her path was different than mine, and I'm so proud of everything.' In October 2023, McKenna, now 28, revealed that Retton was hospitalized and in the ICU with a rare form of pneumonia. "My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life. She is not able to breathe on her own. She's been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she not insured," she said, while also linking a Spotfund page for support. Retton told PEOPLE in July 2024 that she pulled through because 'God wasn't ready for me yet," though she felt her life would "never be the same" again, as she said she still relied on daily oxygen. 'It's been really hard. My lungs are so scarred. It will be a lifetime of recovery. My physicality was the only thing I had and it was taken away from me. It's embarrassing," she said. West Virginia man, 84, nearly dies after falling from cross during Good Friday re-enactment

An elderly man was injured after falling 10 feet off a wooden cross at a Good Friday reenactment in West Virginia. The unidentified man, 84, was airlifted to the hospital after falling off Jesus' cross at the Masonic Cemetery in Weston, located 100 miles North of the capital, Charleston, according to WDTV. The incident occurred around 12:30pm and he was not a member of the church, the outlet reported. A family member told WDTV that the man is currently in the ICU with broken ribs, but is now in stable condition. As for how the man fell off the cross, it is currently unclear. It was the church's 20th annual Good Friday celebration. Each year, three men dressed in white cloths climb up onto the tiny platforms on the crosses to reenact the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. 'There are people who are on the crosses who represent Jesus and the two thieves,' Beth Barnes, a longtime member of the church, told WV News. 'Some people don't know what Good Friday is about — our Lord Jesus Christ dying for our sins. Being on the cross, being tortured terribly, and then dying, all for our salvation,' she continued. A family member told WDTV that the man is currently in the ICU with broken ribs, but is now in stable condition. As for how the man fell off the cross, it is currently unclear 'My favorite part every year is watching the guys up on the cross. It's really touching seeing them volunteer to help teach other.' Barnes made no mention of the man falling. In another Easter weekend tragedy, Pope Francis died at the age of 88 on Easter Monday. The Pontiff spent his final hours with the faithful, emerging to bless thousands of people in St. Peter's Square on Sunday and touring the piazza in the Popemobile to wild cheers and applause after being discharged from hospital only last month. Francis had briefly met with US Vice President JD Vance for a 'quick and private' meeting at the Casa Santa Marta residence in Vatican City earlier on Sunday. He was hoped to be making a steady recovery from double pneumonia before Cardinal Kevin Ferrell, the Vatican camerlengo, announced that he had died at 7.35am local time yesterday. 'With immense gratitude for his example as a true disciple of the Lord Jesus, we commend the soul of Pope Francis to the infinite, merciful love of God, One and Tribune,' he said in a statement. Francis had only left the hospital under 'protected discharge' on March 23 after suffering an infection that developed into pneumonia in both lungs earlier this year. The Vatican has released photos of Pope Francis being laid out in his open coffin for the Confirmation of the Death of the Pontiff ceremony. The ceremony, which took place last night and lasted just under an hour, saw Cardinal Farrell read the official declaration of death aloud. Francis' body was also placed in an open wooden casket in the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta hotel. Two Swiss Guards stood at attention as Farrell blessed Francis with holy water.

84-year-old man critically injured after falling from cross during crucifixion reenactment

An 84-year-old man was critically injured after falling from a cross during a reenactment of the crucifixion of Jesus that took place Friday in West Virginia. The man fell about 10 feet from a replica cross during an event from Vandalia Community Christian Church at the Masonic Cemetery in Weston to mark Easter. The man was flown to a hospital with critical injuries. He is currently in the ICU with broken ribs, but is recovering and is expected to survive, his family told WDTV. The man was not a member of the church, but was assisting with the event, according to the outlet. The fall occurred during the church's 20th iteration of the reenactment. The event featured three men performing different stations of the cross, standing on small platforms in costume, West Virginia News reports. Individuals dressed as Roman centurions and Mary looked on. 'We are here today, on this windy but gorgeous day, to reenact the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. We've been doing this for over 20 years. We've been here in years past when it was raining, [with] sleet, snow and freezing temperatures, but today is perfect. There are people who are on the crosses who represent Jesus and the two thieves,' church member Beth Barnes told the outlet, apparently before the fall took place. On Good Friday, Catholics around the world read the gospel about the crucifixion in church and some reenact the event. This year's Easter season was marked with tragedy for Catholics, as Pope Francis died on Monday from a cerebral stroke that led to a coma and heart failure.
