Is Alex Cora worried Red Sox may fire him? Here's what he said
With the Red Sox sitting four games under .500 at 27-31 and riding a five-game losing streak, there's no doubt the club is underachieving. But a disappointing first third of the season doesn't mean manager Alex Cora is worried about getting fired. Asked whether or not he was worried about job security on 'WEEI Afternoons' with Andy Hart, Nick 'Fitzy' Stevens and Ted Johnson, Cora said he was not. Cora received an extension to become the second-highest paid manager in major league history in July, signing a three-year deal in the $21-22 million range. Advertisement 'No, not really,' Cora said Thursday. 'From my end. I actually don't ask coaches about that. I just ask them to do their best on a daily basis. But I can answer that question personally: No.' Cora's Red Sox were just swept in Milwaukee and are 10-16 in May. They are a staggering 6-15 in one-run games and suffered two such defeats at American Family Field this week. 'I feel like every day we go out there and we're doing our best,' Cora continued. 'It hasn't happened for us. You look at the season and having conversations with some people this morning, I was like, 'It's a weird one, right?' because it feels like you're in every game but it's not going your way. 'Just a tough stretch for us and for me as a manager and we've just got to be ready for tomorrow. We've got a big series coming up here in Atlanta. Hopefully, we can win two out of three or sweep it and get this bad taste out of our mouth.' Advertisement Cora is a favorite of ownership — and team president/CEO Sam Kennedy — and was thought to be given major security when he signed his deal last summer. As of now, despite Boston's rocky start, there are no indications that the Red Sox are considering moving on from Cora. Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow, in just his second season running the baseball operations department, is also thought to be safe. Still, Boston has dug itself quite the hole early. As of Thursday's off day, the Red Sox are 9½ games back in the American League East and 4½ games out of the wild card race and have an 18% chance to make the playoffs, according to FanGraphs. 'It's not early,' Cora said. 'I've been saying that... It's the first third of the season we have played and we're playing under .500. We have fallen behind a lot of games in the division. Obviously, there's a lot of ways to make it to the playoffs. But if we're going to talk about playoffs, we just have to play better. I think the first goal is to get back to .500 and start winning more games.' In the immediate future, Cora said, the focus for the Red Sox needs to be on slowing things down and trying to win some games. 'There's certain times in the season when things are going great that you can run freely and try to score from first, try to steal from second, steal bases and all that. Try to force plays,' he said. 'In this case, if you look at it the last two or three weeks, every play matters. So slowing it down is the most important thing.' More Red Sox coverage Read the original article on MassLive.

Would the Boston Celtics consider trading Jaylen Brown?
In an offseason that is expected to have plenty of chaos around the NBA, the Boston Celtics will be faced with several decisions to make, and one hypothetical includes trading away superstar Jaylen Brown. Facing the likelihood that they will be without Jayson Tatum for most of, if not all, of the 2025-26 season, the Celtics could look to trade one of their most valuable assets to rebuild the roster as they await the return of Tatum. Trading Jaylen Brown feels as if it would be the most extreme decision the Celtics' front office could make this offseason, and would signal a change in direction for the franchise. While it all feels unlikely to happen, the question is not only would the Celtics consider it, but what a possible return would look like for the team. Watch the video above to see the 'WEEI Afternoons' radio crew discuss the idea of the Celtics potentially trading Jaylen Brown. The easiest argument against it would be that with Tatum out for a long time, it provides an opportunity for Brown to takeover as the face of the franchise, and in turn the front office will have to put together a supporting cast around him to keep them as a contender in the Eastern conference. Former Patriot: UNC should consider firing Bill Belichick with girlfriend Jordon Hudson ‘embarrassing' him
Bill Belichick had a knack during his Patriots tenure for moving on from a player sooner rather than later, not wanting to wait until the production dipped. One of his former players, Ted Johnson, believes North Carolina needs to take a similar tactic regarding its new coach amid the alleged growing concern about the famous coach, particularly in the aftermath of his disastrous CBS interview featuring 24-year-old girlfriend Jordon Hudson constantly interrupting. Johnson said he believes Hudson has been 'embarrassing Bill.' Advertisement 'I hold college coaches to a higher standard than I do NFL coaches when it comes to morally, they are supposed to leaders of men, set a good example that kind of thing,' Johnson said on 'WEEI Afternoons' on Tuesday. 'I'm surprised UNC never called Atlanta on why they passed on hiring Bill Belichick. My feeling is that the Atlanta Falcons are kinda looking at the UNC and going, 'You should have called us.' 'I say all that to say this: I think the … Tar Heels should consider firing Bill Belichick. They should consider letting him go at this point. It's a lot of money and they're deep into, obviously, their preparation for next year, but I look at Bill Belichick and I wonder if he's fit to coach an NFL team, let alone fit to coach a college team which, again, I put more onus on the character and personality and just overall character, if you will, of a college coach than I do a pro coach. I'm worried that Bill Belichick just isn't fit to coach college kids and UNC should consider cutting ties with Bill Belichick.' 4 Ted Johnson during a practice in 2003. AP Advertisement Johnson played for Belichick for five seasons from 2000-04, winning three championships under his tutelage. He spent 10 total season with the Patriots after being a second-round pick in1995. His belief in moving on from Belichick, 73, is rooted in his idea of what a college coach's role should be, which is influenced by his time playing for late Colorado coach Bill McCartney. Johnson referred to McCartney — the Buffaloes' coach from 1982-94 — as 'damn close to perfect,' praising him for setting an example and being a coach who made the university 'proud.' 4 Bill Belichick (l) and Jordon Hudson (r) in February 2025. Advertisement With Belichick, he's not sure how the Tar Heels can be proud since most of the storylines are focused on his relationship with Hudson and her role with the program. Belichick has asked for her to be CC'd on emails and Hudson sent the school emails expressing concerns about social media comments and how son and defensive coordinator Steve Belichick is described. 4 Ted Johnson (l) talking with Belichick (c) during a practice. Boston Globe via Getty Images Hudson released an email Tuesday after the CBS interview fiasco in which she said 'we're not talking about this' in regards to a question about how the two met, in addition to other butt-ins. Advertisement 'These big institutions are proud institutions and it reflects on the institution when you hire coaches that aren't reflecting the value of what you're all about and I just don't think Bill is doing that right now,' Johnson said. 'If I'm UNC, I've heard all of guys guy say … this is going to get worse before it gets better. So with that in mind, don't you think it's better to cut loose now than see this thing through?' 4 Ted Johnson (52) making a tackle during a 2001 game. REUTERS When pressed about what Belichick has done that would qualify as a fireable offense, Johnson cited the much-scrutinized relationship between the pair. 'What you've seen so far, the behaviors with Jordon. That dynamic, her being on the football field, her just kind of embarrassing Bill,' Johnson said. 'People say, 'Well, she's taken control of Bill. You think Bill doesn't have any say in how these things go?' Of course he does. He's OK with what she's doing. You don't think he knows that that email was being posted on her Instagram? Of course he knows. He's signing off on that. To me, those are bad decisions that makes him and the university look really bad and question whether or not he is of sound mind and should be running a football team at the University of North Carolina. I think it's something you have to really, really consider. Just question the decision-making from the head coach at this point for those reasons.' Beyond the off-the-field situation, Johnson also isn't sure if Belichick is really meant to guide young men in the way McCartney did for him and others. 'I've always said this about Bill. Bill Belichick never has really cared about his players, like genuinely cared. Bill Parcells genuinely cared about his players. Case in point, he's given millions of his own money to help players that have had problems post-football,' Johnson said. 'Bill Belichick would never do that, never even considering doing that. At the college level, you really need coaches that care about players and them as human being and them as men. Bill Belichick has never cared about his players and it's just not a good fit considering what I'm seeing going on right now from Bill.'

Rumor of Eagles' Trade of A.J. Brown Sets NFL Internet on Fire
The Philadelphia Eagles may be coming off a Super Bowl victory, but the team has already had to say goodbye to many of the heroes from their victory. Darius Slay, C.J. Gardner-Johnson, and many other stars on the Eagles have moved on this offseason. They may not be the only ones, either. Advertisement At least according to a rumor that is setting the NFL internet on fire. Host Nick 'Fitzy' Stevens shared on the 'WEEI Afternoons' show in New England that the Patriots could be close to eventually getting a deal done for Eagles star wide receiver A.J. Brown. 'I got a call earlier today that the Philadelphia Eagles really, really, really want Abdul Carter and that they would consider, rather, are planning to call your New England Patriots on draft day, if Carter falls to No. 4, to see if Mike Vrabel would like a reunion with A.J. Brown and possibly more draft selections and compensation to come,' Stevens said Friday. So this is "sourced'' info? Hmm ... Advertisement Brown shared a video where he celebrated receiving a Julian Edelman jersey that some interpreted meant he was holding is own future Patriots No. 11 jersey that he would be wearing if a deal happened. The All-Pro receiver is, however, a well-known internet troll. The radio station, it seemed, got hoodwinked into spreading a red-hot rumor by falling for a prank. It all began when Brown posted a video with a cryptic message on Instagram. The caption read, "The wait is finally over." In the video, Brown reveals a No. 11 New England Patriots jersey. He told viewers, "Well, it's finally official. The wait is over." Advertisement He'd been traded to the Patriots? But then Brown turned the jersey around, showing his audience it was actually a signed Edelman jersey. He then said, "I play too much. I have fun ... Don't take me serious." Says our NFL insider Mike Fisher: "So ... no. There is no indication that a potential trade is in the works for Brown. What folks are missing is that he also recently got himself a Tom Brady jersey. And that doesn't mean he's getting traded, either.'' The Patriots (and their radio station) might believe the Eagles could get aggressive to move up. But the Brown-related part of the story? It's a late April Fools' joke. Related: Eagles Gatorade Shower Headlines Kendrick Lamar-Led Monster Ad Campaign Related: Eagles Leak Major Change in Dallas Goedert Trade Plan
