Cumbrian village celebrates VE Day 80th Anniversary with scarecrow festival
A WEST Cumbrian village has commemorated the 80th Anniversary of VE day with a heritage themed scarecrow festival. Villagers from Gilcrux near Aspatria prepared some interesting designs to mark May 8 with scarecrows based on VE and Second World War themed characters including a Freedom Dove, Firefighters, Land Girls and Prime Minister Winston Churchill. A villager said: "We have had a number of exciting heritage scarecrow festivals over the years. In 2025 we wanted to do something special and to celebrate 80VE anniversary."

Cumbrian man wins almost £100,000 on hit ITV game show 'The 1% Club' with Lee Mack
A WEST Cumbrian man has taken home almost £100,000 on hit ITV game show 'The 1% Club'. Dominic Jackson from Egremont took home £96,000 when he won the hit ITV gameshow hosted by Lee Mac which aired on Saturday, April 19. The winning question 1% question for Dominic was: "I keep forgetting my four-digit PIN number. I know each digit is higher than the previous digit but I need this diagram to remember it. "What is my four digit PIN number?" Dominic answered the question correctly as he responded 1489. Congrats to Dominic. Big win! Played very well and was super calm. Enjoy the horse....#the1percentclub — The 1% Club (@1PercentClubITV) April 19, 2025 Dominic was the only one of three finalists to get it right so he left the show with £96,000. The 1% Club is a TV game show which allows players to be challenge themselves and see if they are a 90% player or can go all the way to the 1% question and win up to £100,000. In a post on social media following the win, The 1% Club said: "Congrats to Dominic. Big win! Played very well and was super calm. Enjoy the horse...."

West Cumbrian coastguard team take part in training session
A WEST Cumbrian coastguard team has been doing a training session. The Whitehaven Coastguard team conducted their training around the Whitehaven Harbour and Kells area. The team conduct their training (Image: Whitehaven Coastguard) In a post on social media, Whitehaven Coastguard said: "Under February's full Moon (also known as the Snow Moon, and was the last full moon of meteorological winter), we undertook a Lost and Missing Person Search, covering coastal and inland areas of Whitehaven Marina and Kells. "With the missing person soon located, casualty assessment and treatment were undertaken, whilst a suitably safe Helicopter Landing Site was identified, a sweep of the area done for Foreign Object Debris, then secured and appropriate landing lighting to identify it from the air. The team conduct their training (Image: Whitehaven Coastguard) "Meanwhile, a short stretcher carry to the HLS was undertaken, before the team ended and debriefed."
