Sony is back with new WH-1000XM6 heaphones that sound impressive
Sony has a very long tradition of making excellent wireless headphones. The Japanese firm's WH-1000XM4s (launched in 2020) are still much-loved by those who own them. The award-winning WH-1000XM5s (which arrived in 2022) then refined the experience further, adding better sound and a new look. Now, there are some new cans to choose from, and they appear even more impressive than anything Sony has launched before. Unsurprisingly, they are called the Sony WH-1000XM6, and they look set to improve on what were already some of the best headphones money could buy. Firstly, Sony says its Active Noise Cancelling (ANC) is now its most 'advanced' yet, meaning owners should only hear the music and not annoying background sound. This has been achieved thanks to an advanced processor and 12 clever microphones that are dotted all over the headphones. Hopefully, this update means you can still enjoy a podcast when sitting in a noisy cafe or having a screaming baby near you on a plane. When you don't want ANC, you can tap a button on the side to let audio in or simply place your hand over the ear cup to hear what's going on around you. That's perfect for those times when you walk into a coffee shop to order a latte and don't want to take them off. Next, there's improved audio with Sony saying the upgraded sound has been developed in collaboration with world-renowned mastering engineers. The collaborative team of Grammy-winning and Grammy-nominated engineers includes Randy Merrill (Sterling Sound), who has worked with the likes of Ed Sheeran; Chris Gehringer (Sterling Sound), known for his work with Lady Gaga and Mike Piacentini (Battery Studios), who has mastered tracks for Bob Dylan. Plus, there's DSEE Extreme, which upscales compressed digital music files in real time to restore high-range sound lost in compression. If you don't like what you are hearing, all the settings can be adjusted in the Sony Connect app with the WH-1000XM6 even featuring a 10-band EQ for the ultimate precision. Of course, many of us now use headphones for videos as well as music. To help make a boxset binge feel more immersive, 360 Reality Audio Upmix for Cinema has been added, which brings a spatial sound experience just like you are in a movie theatre. Along with sounding great, another vital feature of headphones is the way they look and feel. Sony has refined things again this year with the WH-1000XM6, which features a soft-fit wider headband infused with vegan leather and earpads designed for all-day usage. They also fold up neatly like origami and can be popped into their carry case. At launch, you'll find three colours including Black, Platinum Silver and Midnight Blue. Other extras worth a mention include long battery life, fast charging, improved voice calls and Scene-based Listening. This new intuitive feature uses sensing technology to automatically play music according to your activity and adjust noise cancellation level based on your environment They sound pretty mighty, but so does the price. They cost £400, which is pretty expensive, especially as you can currently get the older WH-1000xm5s for just £279. PS5 pricing could go up thanks to tariffs — what you need to know
Sony recently held its earnings call with investors, where the electronics giant announced its financial forecast for the next year. The company said that it expects President Trump's tariffs to impact its business, costing it around 100 billion yen (around $680 million), according to Nikkei Asia. During the call, Sony CFO Lin Tao said that the company is mulling "passing on" the taxes from President Trump's tariffs to consumers, mostly to protect its own profits. This would mean higher prices on Sony products. It should be noted that Tao didn't specify that the price increases would impact the PS5, and Sony may want to protect pricing in the US, as it's one of the largest markets for its video game division. And Sony has already increased the price of the PS5 in Australia, Europe, the U.K. and New Zealand this year. Sony's CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned during the call that the company is considering moving some of its manufacturing to the United States to avoid most of President Trump's tariffs. He said the PS5 could be "produced locally," adding that it would be "an efficient strategy." If Sony plans to move some production to the US, it's unclear when or how long it would take for the company to get new plants up and running. Presumably, Sony could bulk essential components to the US and then finish assembly here, which might save money. Like many major companies, Sony has moved some of its production to countries like Vietnam and India. Still, a majority of the PS5 is built in China. Despite the recent 90-day tariff pause and reduction of tax rates, the tariffs between China and the US are still high. The current 30% rate is still higher than the 10% rate other countries face. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Additionally, game consoles are not included in electronics exemptions like various smartphones and semiconductors. Microsoft has already raised prices by $100 for Xbox consoles, with $80 games coming this fall. Recently, Nintendo admitted that prices could go up for Switch 2 depending on what happens with the tariffs. As for Sony's plans for pricing, we could learn more this week when Sony releases its flagship WH-1000XM6 headphones. The excellent WH-1000XM5s launched at $399, but rumors point to Sony charging $449 or even $499 for the new headsets.

Sony WH-1000XM6 leak just tipped the headphones for imminent arrival — here's what we know
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Sony's follow-up to the WH-1000XM5 headphones can't come soon enough for anyone looking to pick up what's sure to be one of the best headphones you can buy. There's been nothing official from Sony, of course, but a fresh leak seems to confirm the imminent arrival of the over-ear WH-1000XM6 headphones. According to an update from The Walkman Blog, Sony has been granted Apple's Made for iPhone/iPad certification for a pair of headphones with the model number YY2984. This model number has previously been linked with the WH-1000XM6s and could mean we're getting close to a reveal. Apple will typically publish MiFi certifications shortly before a device's release and prior rumors have suggested a reveal window of May, even if the actual launch occurs later this year. Even if we don't get any more word from Sony, we may start to see more leaks appear in the coming weeks as the headphones get closer to primetime. The team over at The Walkman Blog has already divined a lot of what to expect from the rumored XM6s from an earlier FCC filing relating to the headphones. It's expected they'll boast detachable earcups, a 3.8V battery rating with fast charge ability. While the rating is the same as the WH-1000XM5s, the blog points out that this doesn't mean the capacity will be. For example, the XM5s jumped from the 1,100mAh of the XM4s up to 1,200mAh capacity, so there's still hope for a better battery performance. Digging into the illustration that accompanies the filing (above), The Walkman Blog suggests we could be looking at the same 30mm drivers behind a slight redesign of those aforementioned detachable earcups — as well as possibly a slightly altered hinge. Keeping with the rumored specs for a moment, the report says we'll see a Mediatek SoC powering the headphones with Bluetooth 5.3 support and a bump in antenna gain from the current 1.6 dBi up to 2.91 dBi. So far, so good. It's not an understatement to say the audio team here at Tom's Guide are rubbing our hands in anticipation for the XM6 headphones. Sony's current WH-1000XM5s are getting a little long in the tooth, but are still one of our top recommendations for anyone looking for a great pair of noise-cancelling headphones that balance price, performance, and battery life. So you can bet we're already getting our test track playlist in order ready for when Sony finally decides to reveal its next pair.
