White chocolate fans convinced 'iconic' treat is returning after 11 years away
This cult classic, which was first launched in 2003 but ditched after a decade, appears to be making a comeback and die-hard fans have gone wild. Here's all you need to know
Chocolate aficionados, brace yourselves – a much-missed sweet treat is rumoured to be making a grand return to the shelves after an 11-year hiatus. Social media food enthusiast, Minstrel Munches, has sparked excitement with claims that the snack, first launched in 2003, is due for a revival within the next couple of months.
"They are coming back," she exclaimed in a TikTok video. "They are expected to be released in the middle of June or start of July. I never got to try these before and they were discontinued in 2014 [due to poor sales]."
The chocolate delight in question is none other than white chocolate Maltesers, a beloved offering from Mars. The TikTokers also revealed that the brand plans to introduce several new Maltesers varieties, including a chocolate tiramisu flavour and a dark chocolate Black Forest gateau variant.
She added: "I've also tried the gold ones too – I actually think they are better than the regular Maltesers. But I can't wait to try the white ones – are they going to be better than the regular ones too?"
In addition, social media foodie group NewFoodsUK joined in on spreading the tantalising news on TikTok, writing: "You guessed it... They're BACK. White. Maltesers. That's right – the iconic creamy, crunchy, melt-in-your-mouth WHITE MALTESERS are set for their triumphant comeback! Circle the dates – they'll be gracing shelves between mid-June and July.
"So prepare to hoard, indulge, and savour the return we've all been eagerly anticipating. Lovers of white chocolate, your time is near."
Responding to the news, one TikTok user expressed their disappointment that the product had been discontinued in the first place, saying: "These were the best so gutted they were discontinued."
Another user was overjoyed, admitting: "I really hope this is real I'll actually cry it's been too long," while a third person couldn't contain themselves by saying: "It's about time they come back, I can't wait."
A fourth commented: "Thank god, my dad will smile again. These were his favourite," while another ecstatic fan declared: "This has made my year! My absolute fave!"
Last year, when fans called for the return of white chocolate Maltesers, a Mars Wrigley UK spokesperson told Sky News: "We're always listening to the fans of our chocolate and fruity treats, which is why we're constantly innovating our ranges."
They acknowledged that while white chocolate Maltesers were not currently available, the company offered other delicious alternatives, such as M&M's and the original Maltesers.
They also hinted at potential future comebacks, saying: "We've always got an ear to the ground and recognise the enduring love for old favourites, so stay tuned for some epic comebacks that could be happening soon... Watch this space!"
