"Virat and Sharma massive losses": England's all-rounder Brydon Carse
Leeds [UK], June 18 (ANI): England's bowling all-rounder Brydon Carse believed India will field a 'strong' playing XI despite the 'massive' loss of the batting bigwigs Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the first Test of the five-match series, which kicks off on Friday at Headingley. India was left bereft of its batting wizards for the five gruelling Tests in England after Rohit and Virat bid adieu to the red-ball format last month. With the addition of Sai Sudharsan and Karun Nair, the tourists infused youth and new skills into the squad to compensate for the lost experience. Even though India is missing heavy artillery from its arsenal, which has done the job for them in the last decade, Carse believes the depth and quality of Indian cricket will pose them a challenge that they will be ready for. 'Obviously, Virat and Sharma are massive losses for their batting lineup. They are experienced players over a number of years. World-class batters. But the depth of Indian cricket have and the quality and players coming through, they will without a doubt put up a strong XI and we will be ready for whatever challenge that brings,' Carse told reporters on Wednesday. 'They are one of the best teams in the world. To have that opportunity to play against the quality of players naturally, as a sportsman, you raise your level, and you want to be as competitive as ever,' he added. Carse returned to England's playing XI after nursing a toe injury, which kept him out of the one-off Test against Zimbabwe last month. Carse will play his first home Test after scything 27 wickets across five matches in Pakistan and New Zealand last year. The 29-year-old sees the series opener against India as an opportunity to flaunt his groove and put his skillset on display in his home conditions. 'I think it is a great opportunity. We still have a healthy stock of bowling to pick from. It is another opportunity in home conditions to show the different skills I can bring to the team,' he said. No Jacob Bethell, Chris Woakes returns from injury as England name XI for 1st Test vs India in Headingley
England have finalised their playing XI for the first Test against India at Headingley, opting for stability over experimentation as vice-captain Ollie Pope retains the No. 3 spot, while Jacob Bethell misses out on a spot. The decision comes as England prepare to launch their World Test Championship campaign with the five-Test series against Shubman Gill's men; the clash precedes another high-stakes series, the Ashes, scheduled to begin Down Under in November. Pope's inclusion comes despite persistent questions around his returns against top-tier opposition. While he struck a commanding 171 in the previous Test against Zimbabwe, his record against India is hardly impressive. In four matches on home soil against India, he averages 21 with 147 runs to his name. Bethell, 21, had emerged as a possible option after a solid run that included three half-centuries against New Zealand and a recent 82 in the ODI series against West Indies. However, his lack of a first-class century and limited red-ball experience appear to have swayed the selectors in favour of caution. Bethell's exclusion will raise eyebrows, particularly after Ben Stokes had previously suggested the youngster was in line for a spot, comments he later walked back, claiming they were misinterpreted. The bowling department sees Chris Woakes return to the XI after recovering from an ankle injury, joined by Brydon Carse, who will be playing his first home Test. With Gus Atkinson sidelined due to a hamstring issue, Carse could partner Woakes with the new ball; an unfamiliar role in Tests, but one he performed capably during the ODI series against West Indies. Josh Tongue and Shoaib Bashir complete the pace-spin balance, with Jamie Smith continuing as wicketkeeper. Sam Cook and Jamie Overton are the seamers to miss out, while Atkinson remains in the frame to return later in the series. Jofra Archer's red-ball comeback also looms on the horizon, with a County Championship appearance lined up this weekend. India, yet to reveal their playing XI, will field a fresh top order with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both retired from the format. Rishabh Pant confirmed in the press conference on Wednesday that Shubman Gill will be India's new no. 4, while the wicketkeeper-batter will continue to bat at 5. There remains suspense on India's new no. 3, with Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul set to occupy the opening spots. Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, and Shoaib Bashir

Star Pacer OUT, New Opener Chosen As Australia Reveal Playing 11 For WTC Final
Last Updated: Marnus Labuschagne is set to open the innings, and Josh Hazlewood has beaten Scott Boland for a place in Australia's now-confirmed playing 11 for the WTC Final vs South Africa. Pacer Scott Boland has missed out on Australia's 11 for the World Test Championship (WTC) final against South Africa, which begins on Wednesday (June 11) at Lord's. Skipper Pat Cummins announced the team, confirming all the expected tweaks in the team, with Josh Hazlewood taking his place back as one of the pace trio, Marnus Labuschagne opening the batting for the first time and Beau Webster picked for the number six spot. Boland, 36, has once again paid the price for being an excellent, but still the fourth-best, fast bowler in the country. With Josh Hazlewood returning from the side injury that kept him out of the country's last few Tests, Boland has to be content with the bench, despite carrying a stunning Test average of 17.66. Hazlewood will play his first WTC final, having missed out on the defending champions' 2023 win over India at the Oval, too. 'There are some guys where you generally say you've done nothing wrong, don't change a thing, and that's Scott and he's just really unfortunate to miss out," Cummins said at the press conference. 'The message to Scott is there's a lot of Test matches coming up in the next couple of years, and just because you're in your mid-30s doesn't mean you're missing this Test and that's the last Test of your career. I think by having a squad of fast bowlers, hopefully we can extend a lot of careers for an extra couple of years." Meanwhile, Labuschagne becomes another addition to the Australia Test opening musical chairs. Sam Konstas impressed on debut against India during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but was dropped for the two-Test tour of Sri Lanka. Having already tried Steve Smith, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Nathan McSweeney, and several others in the role, the selectors seemed to have finally zeroed in on a promotion for Labuschagne. Australia will hope he can come good in the new role and improve on his form (he hasn't scored a Test century since 2023). His jump up top will mean Cameron Green, playing his first Test after undergoing back surgery in the summer, will bat at three. But Green can still only play as a specialist batter and hence, Beau Webster, who can bowl both spin and medium-pace, will take up the all-rounder's role. Australia's playing 11 for WTC Final against South Africa: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (WK), Pat Cummins (C), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, and Josh Hazlewood. Harry Brook's captaincy era begins as England name playing XI for 1st ODI vs WI
England have confirmed their XI for the opening fixture of the three-match ODI series against the West Indies, with Harry Brook set to captain the side for the first time in white-ball cricket. The match, which takes place at Edgbaston on Thursday, May 29, marks the beginning of a new leadership era following Jos Buttler's decision to step down earlier this 25, takes over the captaincy from Jos Buttler, who stepped down following England's disappointing Champions Trophy campaign earlier this year. He will become one of the youngest players to captain England in ODI cricket, ushering in a new era as the team looks to rebuild its limited-overs the notable selections is Jamie Smith, who will open the batting alongside Ben Duckett. Smith will replace Phil Salt at the top of the order after the senior wicketkeeper was dropped after a string of inconsistent performances. Will Jacks has been slotted in at number seven, tasked with the finisher's role. Jacks is also expected to share fifth-bowling duties, adding depth to the side's middle and lower bowling attack features pace options Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, and Brydon Carse, with Adil Rashid making his 150th ODI appearance. Rashid remains the only specialist spinner in the side — a milestone selection that adds experience to an otherwise evolving decision to go into the match without a fifth front-line bowler has drawn some scrutiny, with part-time options such as Jacks, Bethell, and Root expected to contribute overs. Overton's inclusion has also raised questions, given his limited track record in bowling full spells in the 50-over Potts, widely tipped by analysts to make the starting XI, has been left on the bench but could feature later in the second and third ODIs will be played at Trent Bridge (June 1) and The Kia Oval (June 3).England Playing XI: Ben Duckett, Jamie Smith, Joe Root, Harry Brook (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Jacob Bethell, Will Jacks, Jamie Overton, Brydon Carse, Saqib Mahmood, Adil RashidBench: Tom Banton, Luke Wood, Matthew Potts, Tom Hartley
