Lumen and Ciena Transmit Record-breaking 1.2 Tbps Wavelength Service Across 3,050 Kilometers
Network trial paves the way for hyperscalers and enterprises to have the bandwidth agility and cost-efficiency needed for AI and next-gen applications DENVER, March 27, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Lumen Technologies (NYSE: LUMN) and Ciena (NYSE: CIEN) have successfully established a 1.2 terabit wavelength service trial across 3,050 kilometers (more than 1,800 miles) on Lumen's Ultra-Low-Loss (ULL) fiber network, making it the world's longest 1.2 terabit non-regenerated signal. Using 800G interfaces, Lumen and Ciena successfully tested and qualified the services to support wavelength, Ethernet, and IP services over the 1.2 Tbps single carrier channel. The live network trial from Denver to Dallas used Ciena's latest WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) technology equipped in the Waveserver platform running over a 6500 photonic line system. The trial also showcased the impressive performance and seamless interoperability between Ciena's Waveserver platform and the Juniper PTX10002-36QDD Packet Transport Router at 800 Gbps over the ultra-long-haul 1.2 Tbps intercity network. By leveraging the performance, flexibility and scalability of the Juniper PTX Series Routers, Lumen successfully established Ethernet and IP services with minimal latency and zero packet loss throughout the tests. Cirion Prepares Network for Surging Cloud and AI Demands with Ciena's WaveLogic 6
Set to be first operator to offer 1.6 Tb/s speeds and significant capacity increase across Latin America HANOVER, Md., February 19, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Cirion Technologies, a leading digital infrastructure and technology provider, is planning to deploy a suite of Ciena solutions, including WaveLogic 6 Extreme (WL6e) – the industry's first 1.6 Tb/s coherent optical technology. This upgrade will boost Cirion's network capacity across its expansive terrestrial and submarine networks and includes what is expected to be the first 1.6 Tb/s single carrier wavelength deployments in Latin America. With over 160 interconnected data centers in more than 60 cities across Latin America, Cirion will leverage Ciena's WL6e to link key data centers throughout the region, enabling high-capacity, low-latency connectivity that is essential for customers to utilize bandwidth-intensive applications, such as artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and streaming services. This deployment will utilize Ciena's GeoMesh Extreme submarine network solution with the 6500 optical platform and RLS Submarine Line Terminating Equipment (SLTE).The 6500 will be powered by WL6e, enabling 800Gb/s and 1.2 Tb/s connectivity across 10,975km and 2,500km segments of this cable, respectively. For terrestrial segments, WL6e will enable Cirion to deploy 1.6 Tb/s wavelengths across its metro DCI and backhaul networks.
