Sydney Sweeney On 30-Pound Weight Gain For Christy Martin Biopic

This post discusses weight changes and body image. It's not unusual for actors to undergo physical transformations for movie roles, whether that's a new haircut or dramatic weight loss. And as Sydney Sweeney prepared to play a boxing legend in an upcoming biopic, she certainly put her body to the test. For context, Sydney is starring as Christy Martin — the American fighter known for putting women's boxing on the map in the mid '90s — in a biopic due to release later this year. Speaking to W Magazine for a brand new cover, it was revealed that Sydney gained over 30 pounds to play the part. 'I came onboard to play Christy, and I had about three and a half months of training,' she said, recalling that she 'loved' the whole experience. 'I started eating. I weight-trained in the morning for an hour, kickboxed midday for about two hours, and then weight-trained again at night for an hour.' The Christy Martin biopic doesn't have an official title yet; however, its director, David Michôd, spoke to W Mag for the interview and gave readers a taste of what to expect. 'She was the first woman fighter on the cover of Sports Illustrated and fought on the Mike Tyson undercard. Her husband was also her trainer, and then, after her success, he tried to murder her. Our film is a wild mix of inspiring underdog sports-world story and personal saga,' he said, adding that Sydney 'trained her butt off to play the part.' 'Sydney is that she turned up to work every day with her tail wagging, ready to go,' he recalled, singing her praises. 'No matter how tough it was, she was like a ray of sunshine.' Discussing how her body changed, Sydney said she felt 'completely different,' but 'amazing.' 'I didn't fit in any of my clothes. I'm usually a size 23 in jeans, and I was wearing a size 27,' she recalled. 'My boobs got bigger. And my butt got huge. It was crazy! I was like, Oh my god… I was so strong, like crazy strong.' Regardless of how great she may have felt, it sounds like Sydney wasn't able to keep the physique for very long. According to the cover story, she had only seven weeks to return to her original weight in order to play Cassie in the long-awaited third season of Euphoria, which began shooting in February this year. Sydney's comments about her transformation come six months after she was forced to hit back against body-shamers who made cruel and misogynistic remarks about her physique shortly after filming the biopic wrapped in November. On Dec. 13, she posted a video on Instagram compiling a barrage of hateful comments about her body, following up with footage of her working out at the gym and getting absolutely jacked for the part. The post was met was tons of praise.
