Pilot and 2 Passengers Survive After Crashing into the Atlantic Ocean at Night. Inside 'Heroic' Rescue

A single-engine plane crashed into the ocean off the coast of Vero Beach in Florida on Sunday, June 1 Multiple agencies responded to the mayday call, and a helicopter was able to spot the three passengers in the water Sheriff Eric Flowers said the survivors "would probably be dead out there today if it weren't for our efforts"Three people were saved in a 'heroic' nighttime rescue after a small plane crashed off the coast of Florida. On Sunday, June 1, at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time, a mayday call came in from the pilot, Sheriff Eric Flowers of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office said at a press conference shared by ABC affiliate WPBF. The pilot was headed to Vero Beach Airport, but crashed into the Atlantic Ocean just a few miles offshore. Fortunately, a helicopter was able to locate three heat signatures in the water and the pilot and both passengers were pulled to safety, Air and Marine Operations, a component of U.S. Customs and Border Protection, confirmed in a statement. Flowers estimated that the three people were treading water for about 45 minutes before they were recovered. The pilot was the most severely injured, reporting pain in his ribs, however, all three were transported to Coast Guard Station Fort Pierce for further medical examination. The crash is now being investigated by the NTSB and FAA. 'This is just an incredibly heroic event,' Flowers said of the joint agency rescue, noting that the passengers 'would probably be dead out there today if it weren't for our efforts.' Flowers said that the mayday call, which provided officials with coordinates, and a witness sighting were crucial in the rescue. A helicopter 'spotted the persons in the water and directed rescue boats to their location,' the sheriff's office said in a statement shared on Facebook. When rescue teams got to the scene, the two passengers 'were pointing' to the pilot. Deputy Pilot Jonathan Lozada noted that the dark surroundings added to the danger of the rescue. Another was the distance from land. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. 'That's a challenge for us. We don't normally fly out, three miles out in the ocean,' said Flowers. 'So, they definitely put their own lives at risk.' Despite the risk, everyone involved in the rescue is grateful they were able to save all of the survivors. 'It's just an incredible story. I can't wait for you guys to hopefully get to a day to talk to the people who were actually in the plane,' Flowers said, addressing the group of reporters. 'Because, on our side, it's phenomenal.' Boy, 13, filmed being taught very painful lesson after he hurled Play-Doh at strangers' cars

A teenager was brutally stomped on by an unknown man after throwing Play-Doh at his car. Julian Torres, 13, had been playing with the modeling toy with his friends in Three Oaks, Florida, when the incident unfolded. According to Torres, one of his friends threw a piece at a nearby road, which struck a car. Footage then showed the occupant of the vehicle, a man who has not yet been identified, stomping on Torres after U-turning and coming back to the teens. Speaking with WPBF, Torres said: 'So we started like throwing it in the road. There wasn't really cars there, but we were just like throwing in the road. 'And one of my friends threw a piece in the road, and there was a car, like, coming on like really fast, and, like, it kind of like hit the Play-Doh.' Torres had attempted to hide from the man when he saw the car turn around, but he caught up with him and lashed out at the youth. Speaking with officers after the incident, Torres told deputies he had tried to run from the man when he fell, prompting the assault. Torres, seen here, had attempted to hide from the man when he saw the car turn around, but he caught up with him and lashed out at the youth Lee County Sheriff's Office said another boy was also punched in the hand, and then ran off to an apartment complex office for help. Trish Routte, of Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, told the outlet: 'The passenger in the car loses his mind and instructs the driver to pull over. 'The passenger gets out of the car and immediately starts attacking these juveniles. These are kids. 'This is a grown man getting out of a car, attacking children. After he lays hands on them, he gets back in the car, leaves in a blue car.' According to Crime Stoppers, the man in the clip is facing several felony charges which include child abuse. Local man Troy Sinopoli also spoke with WPBF and said that after seeing the clip he should be charged with assault on a minor. He said: 'The guy was saying, what would you do? I mean, that's why you have insurance and the police, so let them take care of it. 'It's not his job to step in that situation. So what do you think should happen to the guy? Definitely charged with assault on a minor. Kid's a lot smaller than him, too.' Another local, known only as Maureen, added: 'Kids should not be throwing things. Because if they caused an accident because they were throwing stones at somebody's car or something, then who's at fault? '"It had happened to me back in Ohio one time. Kids were out there throwing snowballs, and they hit the side of my car and scared the hell out of me. 'It was in the dead of winter, and I swerved over, and it was like I was lucky I was a lot younger. Your reflexes are a lot better.' The driver's vehicle has been described as a blue four-door Honda that had a pink heart sticker on the rear of it. Anyone with information about the man or the vehicle are urged to contact Crime Stoppers.

F-16 fighter jet escorted plane out of Mar-a-Lago airspace

An F-16 military jet was dispatched to chase a plane out of the airspace over Mar-a-Lago, where President Donald Trump spent the weekend. The fighter pilot executed a 'headbutt' maneuver to get the attention of the person flying the other aircraft Friday, according to local station WPBF. That technique typically involves a military jet moving aggressively toward another plane and crossing in front of its nose as a warning. 'Every pilot that's gone through basic pilot training to get their license should have been exposed to the FAA rules on what to do when intercepted by an air defense fighter,' Shaw Air Force Base says. 'Turning across your nose means to follow the fighter because you've entered some kind of restricted airspace.' The other plane above Mar-a-lago Friday was safely led away from the restricted space over the President's estate in Palm Beach, Florida. It's not clear what kind of aircraft was chased away from the President's property over the weekend. The President arrived in West Palm Beach Friday morning ahead of a three-day golf tournament hosted by one of his clubs in south Florida

A Patient Allegedly Broke Nearly Every Bone In A Nurse's Face. Cops Say It Could Be A Hate Crime.

A Florida man accused of brutally assaulting a nurse, reportedly breaking nearly every bone in her face, is now facing a hate crime enhancement to his felony charge, Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office announced on Thursday. Stephen Scantlebury, 33, was initially charged earlier this week with the attempted second-degree murder of an unnamed Palms West Hospital nurse assigned to his care, according to a criminal complaint obtained by HuffPost. The nurse, 67, survived the assault, but authorities say she is likely to lose the use of both of her eyes. One witness, whose relationship to Scantlebury is unknown, told police he had been acting paranoid in the days leading up to the assault, 'blaming people in his life for events they had nothing to do with,' according to the complaint. Scantlebury was reportedly admitted into the hospital under Florida's Baker Act, which allows families to treat a loved one during an emergency mental health crisis by calling authorities to involuntarily detain them at a hospital for evaluation. Palms West Hospital is, however, not a Baker Act receiving facility, which led the victim's daughter to question why the man was placed there. The hospital's parent company, HCA Florida, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from HuffPost. However, the company told ABC affiliate WPBF, 'If a patient comes to the hospital for a medical condition and starts to exhibit signs or certain behaviors, a mental health assessment is performed to determine if the patient qualifies for a Baker Act designation.' Multiple witnesses told police that on Tuesday, Scantlebury jumped onto the nurse and began attacking her when she entered the room, according to the complaint. One of the witnesses ran out of the room to call hospital security, but when help arrived, Scantlebury was allegedly still on top of his victim, hitting her with his fist. Detectives told NBC affiliate WPTV that Scantlebury made comments about the victim's ethnicity during the attack, which is what led to the hate crime enhancement. Scantlebury stopped his assault and fled after a witness yelled at him, police said in the complaint. He managed to escape the hospital and ran into traffic, where he was taken into custody by the sheriff's department. A public defender assigned to Scantlebury's defense did not immediately respond when reached by HuffPost. On Thursday, the court ordered him to have a psychiatric evaluation. Due to the gravity of the nurse's injuries, she was airlifted to another hospital in critical condition, according to the complaint. Medical staff said 'essentially every bone' in her face was broken and she would likely lose the use of both her eyes. The victim's daughter, who is a doctor herself and asked to be identified only as Cindy, told WPBF she was surprised by the extent of her mother's injuries, saying security 'could have intervened sooner.' 'She has multiple fractures of the orbit, subarachnoid and subdural bleeding in the brain, a clavicle fracture, swollen eyes, bruises on both eyes and her face,' she told the outlet of her mother's condition. 'It looks like more than just one blow — it was several blows. It was pretty intense. ' The daughter questioned how Scantlebury was able to escape the facility. 'This guy was on the third floor. He escaped the hospital. He was on the road! Like, where was security in all of this?' she asked. Her mother is scheduled for several surgeries. I Was Willing To Do Anything To Save My Baby.
