Local police department gets $25K to address uptick in crashes
A local police department is adding patrols to crack down on crashes. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] 'Nobody has any patience, and everybody's always in a hurry,' Toni Fields said. Fields said she hears car horns nearly every day while walking in Troy. Troy has already seen more than 30 crashes this year. 'I would like it maybe if some of the other drivers are a little more courteous and try not to go as fast,' Tom Jess said. The Troy Police Department got more than $25,000 to increase their patrols in the city. Chief Shawn McKinney said the extra officers on the road are only watching unsafe drivers while others respond to 911 calls. McKinney said the city has seen an uptick in crashes since COVID-19. The extra patrols aim to lower that number after seeing eight fatal crashes in the last five years. Officers will be focused on distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding. ‘He's out amongst us;' Convicted killer mistakenly freed from Georgia jail
A county jail accidentally released a convicted murderer before he could be sent to prison, and the victim's family is worried for their safety. He was released only months after he was sentenced to life in prison for killing 19-year-old Delila Grayson, WSB-TV reported. Her mother, Christina Grayson, told WSB-TV she is concerned and wants to know how it happened. Man charged in shooting that seriously injured 46-year-old 'He's out amongst us,' she said. 'He's out walking free.' Guzman was mistakenly released from the Clayton County Jail nearly two weeks ago. Clayton County Sheriff Levon Allen said it was the result of a training failure and his workers not paying attention. He said staff looked at a court document that showed a motion to nolle prosse, or not prosecute. The sheriff said if they had looked further, they would have seen a necrophilia charge was nolle prossed, and the jury convicted Guzman on felony murder and aggravated assault. 'How does this happen? Drone technology helped officers capture a dangerous driver in Miami Township. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On April 6, Miami Township officers were called to reports of a suspicious vehicle on Medlar Road. Man charged in shooting that seriously injured 46-year-old When police arrived, they found the car being driven by Jacob Florio. Officers tried to get Florio to stop, but said he ignored their commands and drove from the scene, driving through yards. The car was found crashed a short distance away, but Florio had run away. With the help of a drone, Florio was found running near Byers Road and was ultimately arrested. He is facing charges of resisting arrest, operating a vehicle while under the influence, obstruction of official business, and felony failure to comply, according to police. Man learns sentence for death of 15-year-old girl; woman charged in attempted cover-up, deputies say
A man has learned how long he'll be behind bars for shooting and killing a 15-year-old girl in Harrison Twp. and a woman is now facing charges for trying to cover it up. [DOWNLOAD: Free WHIO-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] Tommy Moreland was sentenced to 37 to 46.5 years to life in prison on Wednesday. The sentencing happened nearly a month after Moreland was convicted of several charges, including murder and felonious assault, in connection to the November 2023 shooting death of Heaven Washington. Also on Wednesday, Denisha Taylor was indicted by a Montgomery County grand jury on three counts of tampering with evidence and one count of obstructing justice. According to the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, Taylor attempted to cover up the crime. Man charged in shooting that seriously injured 46-year-old As News Center 7 previously reported, deputies responded to a 'rolling shootout' near the intersection of Turner Road and Philadelphia Drive on Nov. 17. Washington, a passenger in one of the vehicles involved, was shot and killed. Deputies previously said that they did not believe Washington was the intended target of the shooting, 'but a tragic casualty of ongoing street violence.' Detectives were able to determine the other vehicle believed to be involved in the shooting, a maroon Toyota RAV4. The same day as the shooting, the SUV was spotted by detectives in unmarked patrol vehicles at the Englewood Meijer. As detectives were watching the SUV, it began to drive off at a high rate of speed. A chase ensured and the SUV continued to go around 70 mph, running red lights and nearly hitting other cars on the road. The SUV later got onto Interstate 70 and continued driving recklessly, going approximately 109 mph. Eventually, the SUV got off the interstate and was later found abandoned in a field in Farmersville. Surveillance video later reviewed by detectives showed Moreland getting into the driver's seat of the SUV before and driving the chase began. Wednesday was the first time we've heard from 55-year-old James Skirvin since the January 2024 incident that resulted in his arrest. While on the stand, he said he wanted to commit 'suicide by cop.' 'I decided that I have nothing left to live for at this point in time,' he said. Skirvin remembered that in January 2024, stresses in his life, like a broken marriage, were piling up.
