Fire hits Matunuck Oyster Bar; iconic Rhode Island restaurant could be a total loss

The Dish: Perry Raso on becoming an evangelist for aquaculture The Matunuck Oyster Bar, a well-known Rhode Island seafood restaurant that has been called one of the best oyster bars in the world, was damaged in a fire early Tuesday morning. The fire broke out shortly before 4 a.m. on Succotash Road in South Kingston, Rhode Island. The Union Fire District said the fire is now under control and clean-up is ongoing, but the building could be a total loss. Union Fire District Chief Steve Pinch told WPRI-TV there was "a major fire" at the popular restaurant. He said windy conditions made it difficult to put out the flames at first. "Everybody in town either works or knows somebody that works at the oyster bar, or comes here and enjoys the oyster bar," Pinch said. "We're just saddened for all the employees and the owner." There was no immediate worse on what caused the fire. Matunuck Oyster Bar The Matunuck Oyster Bar was just named one of the best restaurants of 2025 by USA Today. The newspaper says it offers a "taste of Rhode Island" and recommends that diners watch the harvest oysters get cleaned on the deck or shucked at the raw bar. Restaurant owner Perry Raso was profiled on CBS Saturday Morning's "The Dish" in 2022. He graduated from the University of Rhode Island, where he studied aquaculture, and started a small oyster farm in 2002. Raso has been a proponent of sustainable shellfish farming to feed the world. Diners at the oyster bar could literally see where their food comes from. "To be able to see where your food is coming from, to see the farmers coming in with the oysters, putting them right in the fridge and serving them right here, it's a unique thing," he said.

Is Mass. Rep. Auchincloss running for US Senate in 2026? He's not saying ‘No'

Here's what we know so far about the Democratic race for U.S. Senate in 2026: The guy who already has the job is definitely running for reelection. Everything else, when it comes to U.S. Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., extending a political career that started when Jimmy Carter was in the White House, is an open question. Enter U.S. Rep. Jake Auchincloss, D-4th District. It's an open secret in Bay State politics that the Newton Democrat is likely tipped for bigger things. And with Democrats hungry for new blood on Capitol Hill, and with Markey, 78, among a cohort of lawmakers that some party loyalists believe should step aside, the jockeying for position could get interesting — fast. That talk about generational change got a shot in the arm earlier this week with the news that long-serving U.S. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Illl., is not seeking reelection. During an appearance on WPRI-TV in Providence, Auchincloss didn't exactly rule out a 2026 bid for Senate. But nor, strictly speaking, did he rule it in either. 'I am running for reelection to be the member of Congress from the Massachusetts 4th [District],' Auchincloss told anchors Ted Nesi and Tim White.

With our history under attack, it's time to preserve R.I.'s local newscasting

Imagine an organization, with a robust online presence, that can fulfill any Rhode Islander's desire to access our recorded history —from students to documentary filmmakers, to scholars, to local residents seeking a family member's TV interview from the 1980s. Now imagine researchers from anywhere can learn about the history of Rhode Island using media created from our unique perspective. Advertisement Newscasting is ephemeral by nature. The mission of news stations is to deliver information with immediacy and then move on to the next story. The byproduct of newscasting, however, has been the production of vast archives of history — history that is under great threat of being expunged and rewritten as the US federal government Advertisement As an archivist, the great power of the audiovisual, coupled with the strong public trust in local television news, emphasizes the vital role broadcast media plays in documenting our local history. Here in Rhode Island, our archival history was on display this past week when local Providence television station WPRI-TV (Channel 12) But while the TV stations are the documenters of history, the responsibility of preserving that history lies with dedicated archivists. I believe the cultural heritage and funding communities of Rhode Island must band together with our local news creators to preserve our shared history by establishing the Rhode Island Audiovisual Local News Archive. The opportunity for this work has perhaps never been greater. In early 2025, the Rhode Island Foundation and the van Beuren Charitable Foundation took the lead in Advertisement The primary thrust behind A statewide archive dedicated to collecting multiple forms of audiovisual news media would be the first of its kind in the United States. The Rhode Island Audiovisual Local News Archive will necessarily need to work in close collaboration with news creators. The idea is not to ask those producers to give away the rights to their content, but rather to take the onus of preservation and public access off their plates. And maybe the next time one of our stations has an anniversary, they will find it a lot easier to access their material by coming to the Rhode Island Audiovisual Local News Archive. Becca Bender is a moving image and audio archivist and curator based in Providence. She is a core member of the , which advocates nationwide for local television news preservation and access.
