8-year-old boy contracts H flu and dies within 20 hours. ‘Nothing they could do'
An 8-year-old boy contracted a bacterial infection from a classmate and died within 20 hours, his Indiana mom said. Ashlee Dahlberg, of Lowell, is now imploring parents to vaccinate their children following the April 28 death of her son, Liam Dahlberg. She told WTHR her immunocompromised son complained about a headache when he returned home from school. When he was taken to a hospital the next morning, an MRI uncovered 'bacteria that was covering his brain and spinal cord,' the mother said. 'At that point in time, there was nothing they could do,' Dahlberg told WTHR. Liam had contracted H flu, also known as Haemophilus influenzae or Hib. The disease developed into a meningitis infection, a loved one said in a GoFundMe. Liam, described in the GoFundMe as a 'bright and smart young boy... full of life and potential,' was declared brain dead within 20 hours following the onset of his symptoms, his mother said in a Facebook post. 'To sit there and be told my son was a 1 in a million case and that he was basically handed his death card the minute he came into contact with that UNVACCINATED child, who is a carrier because of the simple fact he/she is UNVACCINATED, makes me sick,' Dahlberg said. Haemophilus influenzae bacteria live in people's noses and throat, and while they don't typically cause harm, they can travel across the body and pose danger, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The bacteria is spread to others when people breathe in small respiratory droplets that are created when an infected person coughs or sneezes, the CDC says. Health officials say the best way to prevent H flu is to get vaccinated, as the CDC recommends all children younger than 5 to receive a vaccination for the disease. It's why Dahlberg has created a petition asking for religious exemptions for school immunizations to be eliminated. 'We must act swiftly and decisively to prevent further tragedies,' she said in the petition. 'Ensuring that all children in public schools are vaccinated, barring medical exemptions, protects not only those children but all members of society.' Liam was a third grade student at Lake Praire Elementary School in Lowell, according to an obituary. Lowell is about a 135-mile drive northwest from Indianapolis.

Cops Say He Strangled His Daughter to Death — and Girlfriend Witnessed Something Awful the Day Prior: Reports
Police say Zachary Arnold confessed to strangling his daughter Zara, 5, on May 19. Prior to her death, he allegedly sent his girlfriend a photo of Zara foaming at the mouth and choked her on FaceTime, according to reports from Indy Star, WTHRT and WISH. The girlfriend did not call 911 because she was afraid of Arnold, she told Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department says that Zachary Arnold confessed to murdering his 5-year-old daughter Zara Arnold on May 19, per court documents cited in the Indy Star, WTHR and WISH. Arnold, 41, initially claimed that his daughter had fallen down the stairs when he called 911 to report she was not breathing that morning, according to the IMPD. He then changed his story while being questioned by detectives with the IMPD, allegedly telling them that he strangled his daughter after having an argument with his girlfriend. Detectives with the IMPD then spoke with Arnold's girlfriend who confirmed that the two were fighting, and then allegedly said that she saw Zara being choked by her father. When He Learned His Wife Was Pregnant with a 3rd Girl, He Did the Unthinkable The Indy Star and News8, citing court documents, report that Arnold sent his girlfriend "photos of Zara foaming at the mouth," "called her on FaceTime while choking the girl" and "said to call 911 because he was going to hurt the little girl." She claims that she told him to stop but "thought he was just playing," according to the court documents obtained by the Star and WTHR. At no point did the girlfriend contact authorities or tell anyone about the photo, what she saw on FaceTime or the threat Arnold allegedly made about his daughter, per the documents cited by WTHR and the Star. The girlfriend later told police that she did not call 911 because she was afraid of had previously been charged with rape in 2020, but managed to get that charge dismissed in a plea deal with prosecutors, according to a sentencing order obtained by PEOPLE. He had also been charged with violating protective orders filed by Zara's mother on at least three occasions, per the sentencing order. It shows that he entered a guilty plea to an invasion of privacy charge just days before his daughter's death. The judge in that case sentenced Arnold to 360 days in county jail but then suspended all 360 days, allowing him to return home. That was on May 12, a week before Zara's death. Related: Man Shoots Son in Face While Pistol-Whipping Him - Then Opens Fire On 2 More Boys as They Confront Him On Wednesday, a spokesperson for the Marion County Coroner's Office told PEOPLE that Zara's cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries and her manner of death was homicide. Meanwhile, the Marion County Prosecutor's Office is waiting for police to complete their investigation before filing charges against Arnold. He is now being held at the Adult Detention Center and is facing charges of murder and neglect of a dependent. The IMPD says more charges could be filed, as the investigation is ongoing. The probable cause affidavit also notes that Arnold blames his actions on his girlfriend, telling detectives that "she did this" to him and her actions are "making him out to be a monster."
