White Hall Elementary receives statewide recognition as an Exemplary Practice School

FAIRMONT, (WBOY) — White Hall Elementary School is one of three schools in the state that was recognized by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) as an Exemplary Practice School for 2025, which was celebrated on Monday with an assembly. 'It is absolutely phenomenal,' Principal Taylor Myers told 12 News. 'I'm so excited not just for myself, but for my entire staff and the students. They've worked so hard over the last several years and they truly deserve this recognition.' Myers believes one of the biggest factors that contributed to White Hall Elementary School receiving this honor is the school's 'Leader in Me' program. She stated that this program deals a lot with data-driven notebooks, which they allow the students to take leadership of. 'We're teaching every student to be a leader,' said Myers. 'So, they're kind of responsible for tracking their data, looking at their scores, setting goals for themselves, amongst a lot of other things.' According to Myers, the program also implements student-led conferences for 3rd and 4th grade students. This allows the students to take their data notebooks home every nine weeks and discuss the information with their parents. 'They talk to their parents about those data notebooks and kind of share how they're doing and their progress,' Myers added. 'It gives them some ownership on the things that they're doing.' Marion County offering garden beds for rent Myers also told 12 News that the Exemplary Practice Schools program first started in 2024, making this the second year that this honor was given out and the school's first time being selected. 'So we're pretty excited to be chosen,' she said. Myers added that this honor is something you have to be asked to apply for. Once White Hall Elementary was asked to apply, they wrote and submitted a narrative that was followed by a subsequent visit from WVDE representatives. The school was honored alongside two other elementary schools in the Mountain State. Another school in our viewing area, Mylan Park Elementary School, celebrated receiving this honor with a similar assembly this past Friday. Myers said that she believes receiving this honor will help White Hall Elementary School continue to grow in the future. 'It'll help the students continue to push and really strive to do their best,' she added. 'So we're really proud of that. Their test scores are great but also, they're great students too.' Being recognized as an Exemplary Practice School will also help White Hall Elementary reach out to other schools, share the Leader in Me program and conduct visits with other schools, according to Myers. She added that she wants to highlight how proud she is of all her staff, students and former principal Mrs. Murray, who also attended the assembly. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. MORGANTOWN, (WBOY) — A Monongalia County elementary school has been recognized as an Exemplary Practice School by the West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE). Bed bugs discovered at Barrackville Elementary/Middle School 12 News spoke with Principal Anne Lupo about what it means to be named an Exemplary Practice School. 'It is a sense of pride and we have put a lot of investment into our students and our teachers are constant learners,' Lupo said. 'They want to better themselves, and it is very rewarding when we have professional conversations and we hear them talk about their students and talk about what they can do in order to make those students and help them move forward, and so it is just huge pride.' How recent USDA cuts will affect West Virginia farmers

CLARKSBURG, (WBOY) — West Virginia farmers are bracing for impact after the USDA announced more than a billion dollars' worth of cuts this week, which eliminated funding to two programs. One of which would have given nearly $4,000,000 to schools to buy locally grown and raised food. The two programs in question are the Local Food for Schools and Child Care Cooperative Agreement Program (LFSCC), which provides funds for schools and child care centers to buy locally grown food, as well as the Local Food Purchase Assistance Cooperative Agreement Program, which provides similar funds to places like food banks. The West Virginia Department of Education (WVDE) told 12 News in a statement that it was poised to receive $3,770,060 this year for the Local Food for Schools and Child Care Cooperative program. That would have been divided between the school food budget, which would have received $2,727,150 and the child care budget, which would have received $1,060,910. The statement read in part: These funds represented 100% allocation for West Virginia products. There would not have been any overhead, administrative costs, or any miscellaneous costs. These are true dollars that would have benefitted West Virginia farmers. This money was in addition to the standard meal reimbursements that schools receive. The Commodity Credit Corporation had been tapped many times since the pandemic to provide extra funds for school meals as they grappled with supply chain challenges and high prices– which of course continue now and are expected to increase. West Virginians may have been exposed to measles, health officials say The WVDE was sent a termination notice letter by the USDA dated March 7, 2025, with the reason for termination being that 'AMS (Agricultural Marketing Service) has determined this agreement no longer effectuates agency priorities and that termination of the award is appropriate.' The letter also said that 'Local Food for Schools (LFS) agreements that were in place prior to LFSCC will continue to be in effect for the remainder of the period of performance.' 'Where you're seeing a lot of the frustration is this is really damaging because farmers have already invested their time and money into creating these products that now don't have a market so it could be potentially devastating to a small business,' WVU Extension Public Health Specialist and Director of SNAP-ED WV Kristin McCartney said. It's still unknown how big of an effect this will have on local farmers who have relied on these partnerships, like ones with food banks, for years.
