Environmental activists push for climate resiliency fund

BOSTON (WWLP) – Environmental activists and lawmakers held a legislative briefing on Wednesday, pushing for long-term funding to mitigate climate change. Incoming education commissioner outlines priorities These advocates spoke about two priority bills. One is dubbed the 'AHEAD Act,' which more than doubles the deeds excise tax on property sales to create revenue for fighting climate change and expanding affordable housing. It would also create tax credits for low-income home sellers and first-time homebuyers. The second would establish a new fee on real estate property insurance premiums to pay for a climate resiliency fund. This fund is intended to support community-based fund's legislative sponsor says this action is overdue. 'We're falling behind more and more every single day, and there is no plan B for us to make up that time, that funding,' said Everett Senator Sal DiDomenico. One lawmaker says this work primarily supports low-income communities. They say those with financial resources can move when the climate becomes intolerable, and those less fortunate will be left behind. 'This work is work rooted in solving inequities and responding to those populations most harmed and most in need of support and services,' said Boston Representative Sam Montaño. While climate change mitigation is a policy priority in the Bay State, the federal government is focusing its resources elsewhere, which could preclude state and national cooperation on solutions. WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) – Family and friends came together in West Springfield for a motorcycle rideout remembering a young man who died in a motorcycle accident in 2023. Edwin Perez, Jr., passed away in 2023 in a motorcycle crash on I-91 northbound in West Springfield, an area that has seen many accidents over the years. Members of the community gathered at Riverdale Street Saturday afternoon to honor the life of Edwin at his memorial site and to raise awareness for safe highway driving. PHOTOS: Vehicle crashed into house on Tiffany Street in Springfield 'We lost our son at an early age, it's not supposed to happen like this,' said Edwin Perez, Edwin's father. 'We're trying to just make sure his legacy lives on and everybody knows his name, and awareness for everybody else that lost a life.' Motorcyclists then rode from the memorial to Rivers Park in Chicopee to host a lantern release and candle lighting. This year marks the third honorary rideout held in Edwin's honor. Edwin's family says they hope to see changes on the highway in the future due to the number of deadly crashes that have occurred. Open burning season in Massachusetts to end this week

CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) – Open burning season ends this week in Massachusetts. Western Massachusetts sees record spring temperatures Opening burning is allowed in Massachusetts through May 1st to get rid of brush, except in several western Massachusetts cities. That means if you have anything left, you'll need to get any burning done soon. Open burning season allows you to burn natural materials in your yard. Permits to burn must be obtained through your local fire department and can be rescinded at any time due to changes in air quality and weather. Burning must be done between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. and must be at least 75 feet from all dwellings. Fire departments encourage you to stage the fire as close as possible to the source of the material. You are allowed to burn: Brush, cane, driftwood and forestry debris (but not from commercial or industrial land clearing) Agricultural materials including fruit tree and bush prunings, raspberry stalks, and infected bee hives for disease control. Trees and brush from agricultural land clearing Fungus-infected elm wood, if no other acceptable means of disposal is available You may not burn: Leaves Brush, trees, cane or driftwood from commercial or industrial land clearing Grass, hay, leaves, stumps or tires Construction materials or demolition debris Household trash There are 22 communities where open burning is banned entirely: Arlington Belmont Boston Brookline Cambridge Chelsea Chicopee Everett Fall River Holyoke Lawrence Lowell Malden Medford New Bedford Newton Somerville Springfield Waltham Watertown West Springfield Worcester When burning, firefighters urge people to use common sense. Burn only approved materials, and don't wait for the fire department to tell you it is unsafe to burn. Put the fire out if winds pick up, and if it does get out of control, call 911 immediately. Anyone who burns illegally could be held liable for firefighting costs, face fines, or even jail time. Remember, it is your responsibility to be able to put out a fire at a moment's notice.
