Waco Library Launches Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) — The Waco-McLennan County Library has kicked off its annual Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge, with registration now open at all library locations and online. The program, which runs from June 1 through July 31, invites readers of all ages to log their reading daily, earn prizes, and stay engaged with books and stories throughout the summer. Participants can sign up and track their progress using the Beanstack app. 'We basically manage our reading apps, our reading challenges through the app Beanstack. If you check out our website, you'll find a link to it,' said Sarah Freeland, Assistant Director for the Waco-McLennan County Library. 'It's really simple. It's free to download and it makes it very easy, particularly for families to log the reading for everyone in their household.' According to Freeland, the Waco Library archives have writing about reading challenge programs dating back to 1915. However, this year is the Mayor's Summer Reading Challenge. Freeland said participants can log any reading material—whether it's a book, a news article, or anything in between—through the Beanstack app. Prizes include bookmarks and Hawaiian Falls water park passes for children, as well as coffee mugs and free laser tag games at Main Event for teens and adults. Library on the Go! brings free events to Waco

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – During this week of Spring Break, the Waco-McLennan County Library hosted its annual Library on the Go!, consisting of four days of free events throughout the community. This week they have held events at Heritage Square downtown, the Waco Independent School District Football Stadium, the Waco Suspension Bridge, and then ending on Thursday at the Waco Civic Theatre. Families filled the building for a morning of fun as children's librarian Stacy Phillips gave a live puppet show to get children excited about reading. 'It's great, because literacy can be throughout Waco. Literacy does not have to stay inside the library. So we take our literacy outdoors and people realize how fun reading is,' Phillips says. After the puppet show, the audience was able to witness a play rehersal – and even take a behind the scenes tour of the theatre. To see the variety of free events, you can go here. Waco kids get up close with city vehicles

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – The start of Spring Break kicks off the beginning of Library on the Go in Waco! This four-day event series is being hosted by the Waco-McLennan County Library, and Monday's Touch a Truck event gave families in the community the opportunity to get up close with city vehicles. Kids were given tours of SWAT mobiles, fire trucks, boats, and more! 'So we're celebrating the vehicles and people that make the city go,' says Library youth services coordinator Rachel Moore. 'So we have different city vehicles and employees around to show off their big vehicles and cool tools that they use at their jobs.' For more information about the Library on the Go events this week, you can go here. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Help shape housing and community projects in Waco

WACO, Texas (FOX 44) – The City of Waco wants to improve housing options and encourage community development, and your input is needed! The city is developing its 2025 Annual Action Plan, which determines how Waco spends federal funding from the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME). Community input helps the city focus its efforts and the limited resources it has on the programs and services which are important and needed in community neighborhoods. You can complete a survey online here, or you can pick up a copy at any of the four Waco-McLennan County Library locations. In addition, Wacoans can also provide feedback in person at 6 p.m. on the following days:– February 11th at South Waco Community Center (2815 Speight Avenue)– February 24th at Dewey Community Center (925 N Ninth Street)– February 25th at Carver Middle School (1601 J J Flewellen Road) The city says it looks forward to receiving your input!
