What the Ban of Red Dye No. 3 Means for Waco
Waco, Tx (FOX 44) – The FDA has officially banned Red Dye number 3 from the nation's food supply, a move that comes nearly 35 years after it was prohibited in cosmetics, due to its potential link to cancer.
The dye, known for its bright cherry-red color, is found in numerous consumer items like candy and soda. The ban comes more than 3 decades after scientists linked the dye to cancer in animals. Many companies fear that red dye number 40 will be banned next which is more common.
Food manufacturers have until January 20-27 to reformulate their products and although the bright red dye seems to be everywhere you turn, fear not dr pepper fans the beloved drink does not contain the forbidden dye. Another locally invented soda, Big Red, also does not contain the dye. Although the Dr Pepper Museum is not a manufacturer and is only an educational resource for the popular soda's Wacoan roots, director of visitor experiences Mary Beth Farrell says they will always comply with any new regulations their vendors face, and it will just be another chapter in Dr Pepper's story
