Player Championship weather: First three days of competition will be in near-perfect conditions
The first three days of competition in The Players Championship look as if they will be the First Coast's reward for a cold winter. The operative number for the weather forecast at the Players Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is 0. As in, 0 percent chance of rain the first three days. None. Nada. And moderate temperatures. The Thursday, Friday, and Saturday rounds will be straight from the Chamber of Commerce wish list for any outdoor event. Sunday will get a bit iffy, but according to PGA Tour meteorologist Wade Stettner, there's a good chance rain might hold off until very late into the final round or even after play concludes. Thursday: Sunny, high 73, low 55. Wind calm in the morning, increasing to 8-15 mph in the afternoon from the South and Southeast. Rain chance 0 percent. Friday: Sunny, high 72, low 58. Wind calm in the morning, increasing to 8-15 mph in the afternoon from the East. Rain chance 0 percent. Saturday: Partly cloudy, high 76, low 63. Wind increasing throughout the day to 15-25 mph out of the SE, gusting to 30. Rain chance 0 percent. Sunday: Partly cloudy early, high 78, low 68. Wind 14-22 mph from the South, gusting to 28 mph. Rain chance 50 percent late in the day. Stettner's note: "Winds will follow a sea breeze pattern the next couple of days. Winds will build throughout the day on Saturday and could gust to 30 mph by later afternoon. A strong cold front is forecast to arrive late Sunday with breezy conditions and a chance of thunderstorms. Wind could blow as much as 30 mph at Players Championship this weekend, plus rain Sunday
Wind could blow as much as 30 mph at Players Championship this weekend, plus rain Sunday Show Caption Hide Caption Min Woo Lee having success with his 2-iron at Players Championship Big-hitting Min Woo Lee is banging his 2-iron around TPC Sawgrass and has posted scores of 67 and 66 through 36 holes at 2025 Players Championship. The Players Championship is expected to have increased wind and a chance of rain on Sunday. The strong winds, gusting over 30 mph, will pose a significant challenge for golfers, affecting ball flight and shot outcomes. Despite the challenging conditions, players are expressing excitement and anticipation for the weekend's rounds. The Players Championship weather is turning windier. It may get wetter on Sunday. The current forecast from PGA Tour meteorologist Wade Stettner calls for the idyllic spring days of the first two rounds to end. It will still be warm but wind will pick up Saturday afternoon and into Sunday, and there's a chance of thunderstorms late Sunday. However, it won't be a typical March wind. The forecast is for wind out of the Southeast on Saturday and the South on Sunday and architect Pete Dye designed the Players Stadium course to be more difficult in North and Northeast wind. As a result, the par-3 17th hole and the par-4 18th hole, for example, will be downwind or from the players' right. "By and large, the south wind always makes this golf course play easier," said Billy Horschel. "But we'll sort of see what the weather has in store." High wind may favor certain types of players, such as Europeans (think Rory McIlroy or Tommy Fleetwood), Australians (think Min Woo Lee) or players with experience playing golf in Texas (hello, two-time defending champion Scottie Scheffler). What's The Players forecast for the weekend? Saturday: Partly cloudy, high 78, low 63. Wind from the SE 15-25 mph, with gusts more than 30 mph. Rain chance, 0 percent. Partly cloudy, high 78, low 63. Wind from the SE 15-25 mph, with gusts more than 30 mph. Rain chance, 0 percent. Sunday: Partly cloudy early, cloudy later, high 80, low 67. Wind from the S 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, 70 percent chance of rain. Partly cloudy early, cloudy later, high 80, low 67. Wind from the S 15-25 mph with gusts up to 30 mph, 70 percent chance of rain. Stettner's comment: "Lights winds Saturday morning will increase through the day, gusting over 20 mph by noon and over 30 mph by 4 p.m. The strongest winds are forecast between 4-7 p.m. Winds will remain strong Saturday night and through the entire day on Sunday. A cold front will track across northern Florida on Sunday, reaching Ponte Vedra Beach late in the day. A line of thunderstorms is expected along this cold front with arrival time here at TPC Sawgrass estimated between 4-8 p.m." What players are saying "I'm looking forward to it. I think it's going to be really important to try to flight your ball and keep it under the tree line. I think once it gets above the tree line here it can start to really get hit by it. And it does, it does swirl a little bit, but I think when the wind is so strong, it will be a little more consistent. But, yeah, this course is challenging enough, but with a wind like that, yeah, I'm excited for that challenge." — Rory McIlroy "The wind we're expecting to project the next two days is going to be one helluva challenge, and yeah, you always want it to be tough. But when you start getting wind conditions like that, quality golf shots don't always turn out well. It's one of those days of acceptance and understanding that you're going to hit some good shots that turn out well and some bad shots that turn out in some really bad spots." — Billy Horschel. "It will be tough. It's a tough course even without wind, and it's intimidating. There will be holes where obviously it will be downwind and some that are into, so there's going to be holes that could be easier, but holes that could be a lot harder. Again, just hopefully keep playing good golf and see how it goes." — Min Woo Lee "It's going to be pretty challenging this weekend. The golf course was definitely gettable the first two days. I wasn't able to take advantage of it the way that I would have hoped to, but yeah, going into tomorrow and Sunday, definitely be some opportunity there with the conditions changing." — Scottie Scheffler
