Pennants glory to Waikohu women

Waikohu made a quiet start, placing fourth in round 1, but two third placings after that had them handily placed. They made a decisive move with victory in round 4 at Waikohu, then repeated that success in round 5 at Mahia and round 6 at Electrinet Gisborne Park. Mahia started even slower than Waikohu - sixth in round 1 - but were never out of the top three on the day until the final round. Patutahi were in the title hunt throughout but needed a huge round 7 and for Waikohu and Mahia to stumble. That didn't happen. Poverty Bay saved their best to last to win round 7 - Teresa Lewis starring with a net 69 - but it was not enough to lift them off the bottom of the standings. The interclub pennants round was held in conjunction with the Pharmacy 53 open tournament - Nigel Campbell and his '53″ team having backed the event for over 20 years. Lewis topped an excellent field of 70 players to win the overall net by one shot from clubmate Maxine Francois. Another Bay player, Mary Allan, won the Stableford with 39 points. As she has done almost the entire pennants series, with each round played alongside the host club's open tournament, Electrinet Park's Karen Hay won the gross - this time with an 86. Terry Allan and Suzy Gardner won the 9-hole net and Stableford respectively. Under a blue-blanket sky and amid rolling green hills that made city slickers envy the rural life, Brown crooned his way to a 6-under 64, including seven birdies and a single bogey, and featuring nines of 33, 31. His score was two better than the official men's course record, but was categorised 'unofficial' due to a couple of local rulings on the day. Still, 64 was a feat that deserved the almost standing-ovation prizegiving recognition for a man who knows how to go low – having shot a record 59 at his home Patutahi track. Brown's performance earned him the unique American whiskey glass bottle trophy while the more standard silverware for the best overall net went to Ross Chalmers – one of a minibus-load of Poverty Bay players who have made the open an annual pilgrimage. Chalmers, who has won the gross in his heyday, won with a net 68. A 39-point haul from Waikohu's Tipi Ruru was another highlight of a tournament noted more for its social atmosphere than as a competition. This year also featured a special after-round, winner-takes-half approach contest on Tahunga's famous par-3 bridge hole. Poverty Bay's Gray Clapham deserved an award for an almost obsessive determination to win it. He entered 12 times ($5 a pop), only to be denied by Electrinet Park's Heath Tupara. SATURDAY - Tahunga Men's Open, gross: H. Brown 64 from S. Jeune 73, H. Harris 75. Net: R. Chalmers 68, W. Brown 69, P. Tuapawa 70 on c/b. Divison 1 Stableford: R. Clark 33, J. Van Helden 32, E. Poverty Bay Auckland-based father and son David and Glenn Solomann are returning to Gisborne this weekend to once again represent Waikohu on finals day of the Tairāwhiti men's interclub pennants. But before they raise the battle flag in Waikohu's playoff against Poverty Bay for third place at the Electrinet Park course on Sunday, the pair will be combining their widely recognised talents at the Enterprise Foursomes open tournament at the Awapuni Links on Saturday. The 'Sollies' look the combo to beat when it comes to the gross. Foursomes, though, is a fickle and at times merciless beast – known as the most challenging format in golf. And there are several other duos lined up and keenly motivated to get their skilled hands on the silverware. Among the frontrunners should be Jace Brown and Dan Collier, Matt Henwood and Craig Christophers, Collin Jeffrey and Brent Colbert, Craig Palmer and Ian Loffler and former foursomes winners Simon Jeune and Rowan Clark. The tournament also features mixed and women's sections. Entries are still being taken. Contact the pro shop. TUESDAY - Gisborne East Coast veterans' Stableford: T. Goldsmith 36, M. Garewal 36, K. Patutahi Suzy Gardner was a rose among the thorns in the Friday meat pack 9-hole Stableford last week. Gardner harvested 26 points in winning division 2 with 43-16-27 – three ahead of Frank Russell. John Neilson's 81-12-69 topped the men's net on Sunday while Denise Johnston's 87-10-77 was best of the women. Gary Watson and Kath McLatchie are the top seeds for two of the club's premier matchplay competitions. Watson claimed the No 1 spot in the Te Kani Pere men's handicap series and faces Korban Harrison-Allen in the first round of matchplay. McLatchie is the No 1 qualifier in the McKeague Cup women's handicap matchplay. The Māori Matariki 18-hole team event being held at Patutahi on Friday, June 20, proved so popular the club decided to add an 8am morning start to the noon tee-off. Unbeaten Jason Devery realising potential in Tairāwhiti men's interclub golf pennants

Devery, playing for Te Puia Hot Springs, is yet to taste defeat after six rounds of the series, which heads to Poverty Bay's Awapuni Links on Sunday. He has a perfect record of five wins from five matches and ended another player's 100% record in round six of the matchplay competition at Tolaga Bay last weekend. Devery was unavailable for round five in the morning, but filled in at No 4 for the Springs in the afternoon and defeated previously unbeaten Poverty Bay player Hayden Keast 5 and 4. Keast wasn't complaining. 'I ran into a hot Jason Devery,' Poverty Bay co-captain Keast said. 'He was two-under through nine holes and I couldn't keep pace. The bro was in good form.' The two points Devery banked for his team were vital. They lost 6-2 to Patutahi (1) in the morning and drew 4-all with Poverty Bay in the afternoon to lift their overall total to 27 points. They sit in fourth place, four points ahead of Waikohu (23) with one round of round-robin play to go. Defending champions Patutahi (1) lead on 35 points, with Electrinet Park (1) second on 32 and Poverty Bay third on 31. Following round seven, the eight teams split into the top and bottom four for semifinal play Sunday afternoon, and Springs do not want to be involved in the playoffs for fifth to eighth. Neither do Waikohu, but to have any chance of catching Springs they need big points in their last round-robin tie against Tolaga Bay and for Te Puia to slip up. Springs face Park (1), who will be fizzing with confidence on the back of their 6-2 round six defeat of Patutahi (1), courtesy of comprehensive wins to No 1 Dan Collier and No 2 Anaru Reedy, and an 18th-hole victory to No 3 Matt Henwood. With Devery missing round five, then beating Keast, only two players – Eddie Brown jnr and Glenn Solomann – have six-from-six individual win records and their achievements continue from where they left off last year. Patutahi's Brown jnr and Waikohu's Auckland-based teenager Solomann were the two frontrunners for the 2024 Sportsman Trophy for player of the series. Solomann got the nod, just. Saturday also saw another teen machine, Marcus Gray, in action for Poverty Bay and he justified his elevation with two wins. RESULTS – ROUND 5 Patutahi (1) 6 Te Puia Hot Springs 2: Hukanui Brown def Richard Apanui 2 and 1; Jace Brown lost to Wade Wesche 2 and 1; Shayde Skudder def Brendon McLeod 3 and 2; Eddie Brown jnr def John Wyllie 4 and 3. Leftie Gray set to unleash in Tairāwhiti interclub golf pennants at Tolaga Bay

Gray's appointment is a case of one leftie out, another in, with Zach Rolls heading off on an OE. The Awapuni Links quartet will also feature the entry of prolific Poverty Bay-East Coast title winner Waka Donnelly into the matchplay fray. Working for LeaderBrand across the road from the Poverty Bay has allowed Donnelly to work diligently on his game - a record-equalling eighth Poverty Bay Open crown at the top of his 'to do' list this year - and he has history at Tolaga Bay in the honours-board form of two King of the Coast Open triumphs albeit before the turn of the century. An in-form Pete Anderson will be at No 1 and co-captain Hayden Keast - unbeaten in the series so far - No 4 for a PB side who will need to be near the peak of their form as they face reigning champions and 2025 points leaders Patutahi (1) in the morning round. 'Tahi (1) are on 27 points, three ahead of Electrinet Park (1), followed by Poverty Bay and Te Puia Hot Springs on 21. There is daylight back to Waikohu on 12, Tolaga Bay 9, Park (2) 8 and Patutahi (2) 6. The champs will be without Dwayne Russell's services on Saturday. He has posted three Ws (wins) and an H (half) so far, so his replacement Jace Brown has Shaq-sized shoes to fill. YMP Premier rugby team's loss will again be 'Tahi's gain, with YMP captain Shayde Skudder playing both rounds. Eddie Brown, on a four-from-four run this year, and younger brother Hukanui only add to their firepower. Patutahi (1) are set to be co-stars in two delectable sub-plots. Following their PB duel, they head into what could be a Game of Thrones-like afternoon battle with Park (1). The Park will have its usual quality suspects in Dan Collier, Anaru Reedy and Brad Reynolds, but Matt Henwood has replaced Pete Stewart, who will be birdie-hunting for Park (2), alongside Bailey Matoe, Sel Peneha and Anthony Pahina. Saturday is the best possible stage for Tolaga Bay to make a significant move. To have any chance of qualifying for the top-four semifinals, Bruce Yates, Taine Lincoln, William Aupouri and Tim Adamson must convert all their home knowledge to position-climbing points in tussles with Waikohu and Park (2). Waikohu face a similar scenario. The 'Sollies' - David Solomann and son Glenn - will again traverse the long and winding road from Auckland all the way up SH35 to represent their adopted country course, backed up by Terry Reeves and Mike Christophers. Te Puia Hot Springs will be minus another four-from-four conqueror, Jason Devery, in their morning clash with Waikohu, but he will be back in the afternoon hungry to take down Donnelly, who started his golfing career at the Springs many moons ago. Patutahi (2)'s flag will be flown by Regan Hindmarsh, Lyall Anania, Dean Pohatu and Hamish Harris. It will be all on in their bottom-of-the-table morning scrap with Park (2). Saturday also features round 3 of the Endeavour men's interclub handicap pennants at Patutahi Golf Club.
