Wichita Falls proclaims April as Child Abuse Awareness Month

WICHITA FALLS (KFDX/KJTL) — On Tuesday, April 1, the City of Wichita Falls and the county issued two significant proclamations declaring April child abuse awareness month. These proclamations will set the tone for a month dedicated to education, prevention, and support. Wichita Falls, IAFF Local 432 begins contract talks in April The proclamations reaffirm the city and county's commitment to protecting the most vulnerable members of the community, children, particularly children affected by abuse. That is why CASA held its Walk of Knowledge event today, displaying the 431 confirmed child abuse victims in the county from just last year. The annual Walk of Knowledge is more than just a display. It's a call to action. CASA organized this event as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month, urging the community to step up and support children who are affected by abuse in any way, shape, or form. This year's event saw a large turnout, with volunteers, foster parents, and community members walking the route in solidarity. Participants stopped to read heartbreaking statistics posted along the way, numbers that hit too close to home. 'The most rewarding part of these events is educating the community that these things are going on. A lot of people don't realize that child abuse happens every day in our community. And so, it's just important that we can educate and spread the awareness,' Casey Washington, CASA Volunteer Coordinator, said. Wichita Falls sees hundreds of confirmed cases yearly, yet many kids still don't have an advocate. CASA always pushes for more volunteers, emphasizing how a few hours a month can change a child's life.
