Saskatoon hosts annual ‘Walk so Kids Can Talk'

The 10th annual 'Walk so Kids Can Talk' saw participation across Canada, and Saskatoon was no exception. 'We need to create more awareness for the services that are out there for our youth. A lot of people are out there struggling alone, and we don't want them to be struggling alone,' said Colton Orieux, a BMO branch manager and Kid's Mental Health ambassador. The walk raises both funds and awareness for Kid's Help Phone, a free 24/7 counselling service for youth. Prior to the walk, representatives from Kid's Help Phone and other sponsor organizations shared that the demand for youth mental health services is increasing in Canada. 'Having two younger children myself, I just think it's such an important thing to advocate for,' Roxanne Mudrewich, a BMO branch manager and Kid's Mental Health ambassador, said. walk so kids can talk' (Hallee Mandryk/CTV News) This year's walk raised nearly $10,000 for the non-profit, but those involved shared that the goal of awareness is equally important. 'I really hope that every individual, of any age, knows that there is a safe place to talk. There are people who will listen, and people who will not judge. And we really want to make sure that everybody knows that that's available by phone, text, or chat – whatever way is convenient for them,' Mudrewich said. Saskatoon has been taking part in the walk since 2013, when Kid's Help Phone first partnered with BMO. The number of youth using Kid's Help Phone has been steadily growing over the past twelve years. 'I think every year it becomes more and more important to continue doing this and continue to spread that awareness,' Orieux said. 'The youth of today are the future of tomorrow, so it's so important for us to support them – and I'm just happy to be a part of it,' Mudrewich said.
