Don't panic! This fearsome military column is in your corner
The Ministry of Defence has said it plans to respond to the fraught global situation by re-establishing a 'home guard' for the first time since the 1940s. According to The Sunday Times, the force will be made up, now as then, of volunteers 'drawn from the civilian population… either too old or too young to fight'. And that means me.
At first, I blenched at the thought of Britain being in a 'prewar era', but when I read that volunteers will form 'local hubs', I gave an audible 'huzzah!' of excitement, as I remembered what immense fun was had by Walmington-on-Sea platoon in Dad's Army.
