Demolition began this week on Walsh Hall to make way for the new Health and Science Innovation Center.
The facility will be 57,000 square feet and will house classes for the nursing, pre-med, health sciences and natural sciences programs.
It's being funded by a Health Resources and Services Administration grant — equaling $35 million.
The City of Mobile and the county also contributed funds to build the facility. The county voted to approve a $750,000 contribution, with the city also contributing $750,000.
Walsh was a freshman residence hall that became vacant in recent years. The building is expected to be fully torn down within a week.
'They have to do some foundational work. We're hoping to do a big groundbreaking ceremony in August, and then it'll probably start going vertical, maybe August, September,' SHC President Mary Van Brunt said.
