GERIK: The remains of two Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students, who were among 15 killed when their bus crashed, have left Gerik Hospital. The bodies of Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad and Muhammad Adib Hazim Halim, both 22, departed the hospital at 6.30pm. Police patrol cars escorted the hearses, which are bound for Besut, Terengganu. The remains of 12 other students and a bus assistant killed in the crash were sent to Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh for post-mortem examinations. Several injured individuals also received treatment at Gerik Hospital. Earlier in the day, family members arrived at the hospital seeking news of their loved ones. The families of Wan Nur Suhaila and Adib were shattered after being informed of their deaths. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir, Deputy Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah, and Bukit Aman Traffic Enforcement and Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri were present to console the families. Earlier, 15 people were confirmed dead and seven seriously injured when the bus they were travelling in overturned along Jalan Jeli-Gerik near Tasik Banding early this morning. The chartered bus was carrying 42 UPSI students travelling from Terengganu back to the university's campus in Tanjung Malim. Preliminary investigations indicate the bus hit a Perodua Alza from behind before the driver lost control and the vehicle skidded off the road.

Gerik bus crash: Victim cooked 'mi celup' for family before tragic journey
GERIK: Wan Nur Suhaila Wan Muhammad, one of the victims killed in the tragic crash along the East-West Highway in Banun, had cooked a meal for her family on Sunday (June 9) before returning to Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim. Her brother, Wan Muhammad Sham, said his 22-year-old sister prepared "mi celup" for the family on the day she was leaving after the Aidiladha holidays. The family had gathered at their hometown in Jerteh, Terengganu, marking a rare occasion with all nine siblings present. "My sister didn't show any change in behaviour. She was cheerful and friendly as always. Yesterday, she cooked mi celup for everyone before heading back to university," he said at the Forensic Unit of the Gerik hospital on Monday (June 9). Wan Muhammad said he was informed of the accident around 3.30am by their mother and rushed to the hospital with other family members. "At first, we didn't know her condition. It was only after we arrived at the hospital that we were told she had passed away," he said. Wan Nur Suhaila was the sixth of nine siblings and a fourth-semester student majoring in Literature at UPSI.
