Three astronauts of the Shenzhou-19 mission return to Earth

Three Chinese astronauts returned to Earth on Wednesday after spending six months in the national Tiangong space station ("Heavenly Palace"), according to a state media outlet, marking another step in China's assertion into space power. The capsule carrying the trio, including Wang Haoze, the third Chinese woman in space, landed shortly after 1 p.m. (0500 GMT) in Inner Mongolia (north of China), the Xinhua news agency reported. This marks the end of the Shenzhou-19 mission. China had postponed the crew's return, initially scheduled for Tuesday, due to poor weather conditions on the ground. The country has invested billions of euros in its space program to catch up with the U.S. and Russia. It hopes to send a manned mission to the Moon by 2030 and build a lunar base. The three astronauts of Shenzhou-19 had been working in the space station since October. They conducted numerous experiments, contributed to Tiangong's maintenance, and set a new record for the longest spacewalk in history (over nine hours). Among the three astronauts of Shenzhou-19 was 35-year-old Wang Haoze. The only Chinese aerospace engineer at the time of the mission launch, she became the third Chinese woman to reach space - after Liu Yang (2012) and Wang Yaping (2013). The crew was led by Cai Xuzhe, 48, an experienced astronaut who had already participated in Shenzhou-14. They were accompanied by Song Lingdong, a 34-year-old former air force pilot, who was on his first space flight. Three new astronauts took off last week to Tiangong, marking the start of the Shenzhou-20 mission. They cohabited for a few days with their Shenzhou-19 colleagues.

3 astronauts return to Earth after 6 months on China's space station

(AP Photo) BEIJING--Three Chinese astronauts landed back on Earth on Wednesday after six months on China's space station. The crew's landing module came down slowly after separating from the return vehicle, descending on a red-and-white parachute, in Dongfeng, in China's northern Inner Mongolia region on the edge of the Gobi Desert. Their return had been delayed by a day due to strong winds and low visibility. The area is prone to sandstorms this time of year. The astronauts, Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, were launched to the Tiangong space station in October, and they turned over control of the station Tuesday to the new crew that recently arrived to replace them. The Shenzhou 20 that brought the new crew also carried equipment for space life sciences, microgravity physics and new technology for the space station. The Tiangong, or 'Heavenly Palace,' space station has made China a major player in a new era of space exploration and the use of permanent stations to conduct experiments in space, especially since it was entirely Chinese-built after the country was excluded from the International Space Station over U.S. national security concerns. China's space program is controlled by the People's Liberation Army, the military branch of the ruling Communist Party. The three Chinese astronauts have carried out experiments and improvements to the space station during their time in space. Two of the astronauts, Cai and Song, conducted a nine-hour spacewalk, the world's longest, during their mission, China's space agency said. The country's space program has grown rapidly in recent years. The space agency has landed an explorer on Mars and a rover on the far side of the moon. It aims to put a person on the moon before 2030.

China to launch new crewed mission into space this week

China's previous crewed mission, Shenzhou-19, launched last October and will reach its planned end date on Apr 29. It is headed by Cai Xuzhe, a 48-year-old former air force pilot who served a previous stint aboard the Tiangong space station as part of the Shenzhou-14 mission in 2022. Also among the crew is Wang Haoze, 35, who is China's only female spaceflight engineer and the third Chinese woman to take part in a crewed mission. Song Lingdong, a 34-year-old man, completes the trio. The Shenzhou-19 team has been carrying out tests to see how extreme radiation, gravity, temperature and other conditions affect "bricks" made from components imitating lunar soil, according to reports at the time of the launch. Under President Xi Jinping, China has forged ahead with plans to achieve its "space dream". Its space programme was the third to put humans in orbit and has also landed robotic rovers on Mars and the Moon. The jewel in the crown is Tiangong, the space station staffed by teams of three astronauts that are rotated every six months. Beijing says it is on track to send a crewed mission to the Moon by 2030. In recent decades, the country has poured billions of dollars into developing an advanced space programme on par with the United States and Europe. In 2019, it landed its Chang'e-4 probe on the far side of the Moon – the first spacecraft ever to do so. In 2021, it landed a small robot on Mars. Tiangong, whose core module, Tianhe, launched in 2021, is planned to be used for about 10 years.

China is planning to send two new crews to its Tiangong space station in another busy year of human spaceflight. China's human spaceflight agency, CMSA, announced in early March that the country is planning to launch two crewed missions this year — Shenzhou 20 and Shenzhou 21 — along with a single Tianzhou cargo spacecraft to deliver fresh supplies and fuel to the Tiangong space station. The three-module Tiangong was completed in late 2022 and has been constantly occupied ever since, with three-person crews spending roughly six months in orbit before handing over to a new crew. China also recently announced that it will train astronauts from Pakistan ahead of a short-term mission to Tiangong in the coming years. Meanwhile in orbit, the Shenzhou 19 crew currently aboard Tiangong have been busy with a range of experiments and exercises. New footage from the orbiting outpost shows the trio of astronauts engaged in a range of activities. Data collected will help researchers back on Earth gain insights in areas including the impact of gravity on visual motion processing and the effects of brainwave music intervention on regulating inhibitory control functions during long-duration spaceflights, according to China Central Television (CCTV). Wang Haoze, China's first female flight engineer in space, is seen using resistance bands as part of the exercise regimen designed to limit bone and muscle loss while in microgravity. The trio also used the small AI flight robot "Xiao Hang" to conduct a series of experiments, including research on multimodal interaction technology, which aims to create natural, intuitive and efficient ways for humans to communicate with machines. The mission has included a pair of extravehicular activities, or spacewalks, including a record-breaking excursion outside of the space station. CMSA has not yet announced a launch date for Shenzhou 20, which will see a handover of control of Tiangong from Shenzhou 19 to the incoming crew.
