Emma Raducanu granted 'special favour by French Open organisers' ahead of tough Iga Swiatek test - after highlighting 'preferential treatment' for top stars in Paris
Emma Raducanu has reportedly been granted a special request by the organisers of the French Open ahead of her big-billing clash with three-time champion Iga Swiatek. The former US Open champion is set to face off with the world No5 on Wednesday after battling past Wang Xinyu in three sets in her first-round clash on Monday. Raducanu has not won a match in the French capital since 2022 and missed last year's tournament due to injury. But the 22-year-old has been in the thick of a promising season on clay, stringing together a number of confidence boosting wins ahead of arriving at Roland-Garros. Despite this, Raducanu will go into her meeting with Swiatek as the significant underdog - partly for Swiatek's prowess on the red clay of Paris, and partly for their gruesome head-to-head record. Swiatek has beaten Raducanu in all four of their previous matches, with their last game a 6-1, 6-0 drubbing at the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open. But in a welcome boost to her preparations ahead of the second-round match, Raducanu will be granted access to practice on the tournament's show court, Philippe-Chatrier. Swiatek played on the number one court in the Parisian suburbs for her routine opener against Rebecca Sramkova, and will likely be scheduled there for a number of her clashes as the defending champion. As per the Daily Express, Raducanu had not played a stroke on Chatrier before Tuesday morning, when organisers allowed her an hour to practice ahead of the day's play starting. Monday afternoon had seen the former British number one highlight the restricted access players were given to show courts in her post-match press conference. 'I honestly think it's really difficult, because the tournament don't really help in terms of getting you court time on the bigger courts or on like the match courts, really,' Raducanu noted. 'I feel like, I don't know, certain players get preferred treatment. It's very different from at the annex, for example, across the road or other courts to then kind of jump onto Chatrier or jump on to a stadium. 'It isn't easy. I wish they would give us more opportunities on stadium or bigger courts, especially if we're going to play on them.' With additional preparations under her belt ahead of the clash, Raducanu will also be keeping an eye on health after the player took a medical timeout during her clash with Wang on Monday. Raducanu had her blood pressure monitored and her heartbeat checked with a stethoscope during the opening set, and used ice to cool herself down as she righted herself. Able to continue the match, Raducanu claimed the remaining games of the set before a dip in the second left her to see out the decider under pressure. Raducanu also suffered a back spasm during her final preparation match, taking a medical timeout against Danielle Collins in Strasbourg before losing in straight sets.

Emma Raducanu overcame a long medical time-out at the French Open to gain first-round victory
FRANCE: Emma Raducanu pushed through despite a long medical time-out to win an intense three-set match against China's Wang Xinyu in the first round of the French Open. The 22-year-old athlete was ahead with a score of 6-5 in the first set when she needed to ask for medical assistance. She was then seen putting ice on her face, and her blood pressure was checked. Due to what happened, there were speculations on whether Raducanu would exit the match, given her history with injuries and illnesses. However, three minutes after the treatment, she returned to the court and eventually won the match. With her victory, she is bound to have an exciting match against four-time champion Iga Swiatek. Raducanu expressed: 'I think I'm actually really proud of today's match, more so than a lot of the matches that I played recently or in general, because I woke up and I felt really sick, to be honest.' She added: 'I felt bad from the morning. I was just trying and fighting through that. It was really difficult. You know, in the first set, I just felt it straight away and it didn't really go away throughout the whole match… To have kind of come through that and overcome how I was feeling, I'm really happy with, and I didn't let it kind of, you know…it would have been easy to kind of let it drag me down.' Highlights of the game Before the match started, Raducanu admitted that the back injury she sustained in Strasbourg last week had yet to fully recover. She needed to overcome her fear of needles to receive acupuncture treatment to treat her concerns. While her movement on court appeared unaffected, her energy levels seemed low. The Chinese athlete managed to take over the second set, but Raducanu was determined and came through with an impressive 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 win despite disappearing from the court for quite some time. Moreover, the match was the longest clay-court battle of Raducanu's career, having a final time of two hours and 44 minutes. In a social media post shared by the LTA, it stated: ' Job done for @EmmaRaducanu at @rolandgarros' Netizens commented on the post and said: 'She really is back to her best. Call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if she upsets Swiatek in the next round, she hasn't been playing well at all lately,' and ' Best of luck for your 2nd GS' In another social media post, Raducanu personally shared her Paris experience with a caption: 'emma à paris 🥐' More netizens showed their support to the young athlete and remarked: 'Well played! Hope you are feeling better now 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻', 'Very nice pictures Emma! Paris is a beautiful city, you are a wonderful girl beside that my favorite tennis player! I will always support you! Let's go champ! ❤️❤️❤️', and 'Congrats for surviving the first round 😀'

Emma Raducanu sets up clash with Iga Swiatek as Katie Boulter digs deep for first Roland Garros win
Emma Raducanu needed a lengthy medical time-out as she came through a three-set marathon to book a blockbuster second-round meeting with defending champion Iga Swiatek at the French Open. The 22-year-old was leading China's Wang Xinyu 6-5 in the first set when she called for the doctor, rubbing ice on her cheeks and round her eyes as she had her blood pressure checked. There were fears that Raducanu, who has had a history of injury and illness issues throughout her career, would have to retire from the match. But after three minutes of treatment she came back on to the court and confidently served out the set to love. Wang rallied to take the second set but, in front of a big crowd on a cramped Court Eight, Raducanu hit back to complete a gutsy 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory in two hours and 44 minutes – the joint-longest match of her career on clay. Prior to the match, Raducanu had admitted the back problem she suffered in Strasbourg last week was was still not 100 per cent right. The 2021 US champion has had to overcome a phobia of needles to undergo acupuncture in a bid to ease the issue. Raducanu's movement did not appear to be hindered by the problem, but her energy levels did seem low. At the start of the second, the British number two flagged again allowing Wang, who is ranked two places beneath her at 43 in the world, to move 5-1 ahead. Raducanu dug deep to claw both breaks back, but 23-year-old Wang – a former doubles champion at Roland Garros – brought up set points on her opponent's serve and took the second to level the match. Raducanu disappeared off court briefly at the changeover and upon her return promptly grabbed a decisive break. She squandered two match points on her own serve but a Wang double-fault in the next game sealed a gruelling win. 'I was really just flat and struggling at the start but I'm happy to have got through,' she said, 'I can take positives in the fact a lot of top players, in the first round, have struggled but got through and given themselves another opportunity. My heart and fight came through today and I'm very proud of that.' Four-time champion Swiatek had earlier stretched her winning streak at the French Open to 22 matches, the Polish world number five beating Slovakia's Rebecca Sramkova 6-3 6-3. Meanwhile, Carlos Alcaraz got the defence of his French Open title up and running with a straight-sets win over Italian qualifier Giulio Zeppieri. The 22-year-old won 6-3 6-4 6-2 in just under two hours. 'I think it was really, really solid,' he said. 'The first round for every tournament is never easy and probably coming here as defending champion, it could be even tougher but I just started pretty well, I kept my good pace during the match, which is great.' Katie Boulter earned her first victory at Roland Garros having come from a set down to defeat Carole Monnet 6-7 6-1 6-1. The Brit had to fight a dip in form and a hostile partisan crowd to get past her French opponent and reach the second round for the very first time a claimed it was a victory she 'wouldn't forget'. 'Sometimes I find it really difficult on this surface,' Boulter revealed, 'I persevered and tried my hardest to bring some good tennis and obviously my first Roland Garros win, you never forget those ones. This one is going to be special for me. I'm really, really happy with today.'
