Nancy: More feedback needed on Senior Citizens Bill

KUALA LUMPUR: The Senior Citizens Bill should include types of development, infrastructure and impending scenarios that will affect senior citizens, says Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. She said her ministry was still gathering feedback from stakeholders on what is needed to improve the Bill. 'We are still receiving new feedback from stakeholders and NGOs on the gaps that must be filled to ensure the Bill is comprehensive. 'The ministry's special project team is still engaging with the stakeholders because there are many people who are interested in this Bill, and we don't want to leave anyone behind,' she said after opening the Wanita Gig and Business In Technology (Wanita GIG@BIT) programme here yesterday. She said once everything was in place, the Bill would be brought to the Cabinet and then submitted to the Attorney General's Chambers. On May 30, Nancy had said that it was unlikely for the Bill to be tabled for the upcoming parliamentary sitting as engagement sessions were still ongoing to ensure that the Bill effectively addresses the needs and rights of Malaysia's ageing population. The Bill aims to cover social, economic and healthcare needs through a structured legal framework, including provisions for healthcare, financial security, and protection from abuse. On yesterday's event, Nancy said the programme was an initiative by the Women Development Department to open up digital economic opportunities for women from various backgrounds and reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering and mathematics while supporting a more inclusive national development. 'We will hold more programmes involving women to provide income generation while helping them acquire skills. 'I hope this programme will be a catalyst for more women so that they can continue to move forward confidently, competitively and safely,' she said.

KPWKM continues to empower women in digital economy through Wanita Gig@BIT 2025

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) continues its efforts to empower women in the digital economy through the Wanita Gig and Business In Technology (Gig@BIT) 2025 programme. Its minister, Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, said that 350 people participated in the second initiative of the Women's Development Department (JPW), under the KPWKM, this year, which provides digital economic opportunities for women while building digital resilience to face the challenges of the modern world. 'This programme aims to provide greater access in sectors such as science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), artificial intelligence (AI), green technology, and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET), as well as to provide knowledge and awareness of cybersecurity,' she said while officiating the Wanita Gig@BIT 2025 here today. Also present were the KPWKM secretary-general Datuk Dr Maziah Che Yusoff and JPW director-general Hanani Sapit. Nancy said programmes like Wanita Gig@BIT, the Income Generation Skills Programme (KIRANA), Iron Women, and Wanita Bangkit Bersasar focus on providing access to training and capacity building or 'upskilling and reskilling' for women to regain a strong foothold in the job market, particularly in the digital and entrepreneurship sectors. She said it is also in line with the National Women's Policy and the 2025-2030 Action Plan launched as a direction to empower women in terms of economy, leadership and social protection. Also taking place at the event was the symbolic launch of Maxis eKelas Usahawan@JPW, which is the implementation of a supplementary programme with the ministry's strategic partners. At a press conference, Nancy said her ministry is still gathering feedback regarding the Senior Citizens Bill to protect the interests of that group before it is presented in Parliament. 'If everything is okay, we will present it to the cabinet, and then we will send it to the AG (Attorney General),' she said, adding that the process needs to consider the latest developments regarding the elderly in the country and around the world to identify the types of development needed, especially in terms of infrastructure.

Gerik bus crash: Counselling team waiting for families, says Nancy

KUALA LUMPUR: The Women, Family, and Community Development Ministry is allowing students and families affected by the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) bus tragedy time to become emotionally ready before commencing counselling sessions. Although the counselling team is prepared to start anytime, many families are still waiting for their loved ones to recover in the Intensive Care Unit and wards, said Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri. "We are ready, but we also have to consider the readiness of the families as we don't want to disturb their emotions right now. "We also received a report that some counselling students from UPSI are using this opportunity to carry out practical counselling for their friends, as some affected students feel more comfortable talking to their peers. "Through this incident, UPSI counselling students can provide encouragement and positive talk while gaining practical knowledge," she said. On June 9, 15 UPSI students were killed in the crash involving a bus and a multi-purpose vehicle in Banun, near Tasik Banding, approximately 57 kilometres from Gerik, Perak. Nancy spoke to reporters after officiating the Wanita Gig and Business In Technology (Wanita GIG@BIT) programme on Thursday (June 12). The programme is an initiative by the Women Development Department (JWP) to open up digital economic opportunities for women, reduce the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), while supporting more inclusive national development. "We have many economic empowerment programmes, and Wanita GIG@BIT is one of them. We will have more programmes involving women in income generation while helping them acquire skills. "There are 350 participants this year, with a focus on reskilling and upskilling in the latest technologies, including artificial intelligence, for women who want to lead in entrepreneurship," she said. Throughout this year, the JPW has planned several other programmes with strategic partners, including eKelas Usahawan @JPW, STEM Graduate Empowerment into the Workforce Programme, Digital Photography and Video Workshops, as well as Basic Generative AI and Cybersecurity Awareness Programme in collaboration with Maxis Berhad, Canon Marketing Malaysia, Mereka Academy, and the International Federation of Women and Commerce Industries Malaysia (IWFCIM). The ministry hopes Wanita GIG@BIT will increase the participation rate of the female labour force in the digital field and further empower women in the country.
