Janine Bullock is a 'Remarkable Woman'…with style
BECKLEY, WV (WVNS) — Janine Bullock, who represents Ward Five on Beckley Common Council, is easy to identify in a crowd, thanks to her sense of style which includes her signature touch, a plethora of eye-catching high heels.
People remember her most for her warmth and dedication to serving the needs of Beckley citizens, though.
'I've had the pleasure of working with Janine the past five years on Council, and she just makes it a pleasure to work with,' At-Large Beckley Common Councilman Cody Reedy said on Monday, March 31, 2025. 'She's one of the hardest-working, nicest women I've ever met. She's out in the community all the time, and it's just been an honor to work with her. When she walks into a room, it lights up. She's just an all-around great woman.'

Bullock, a graduate of Bluefield State College, is still active with her college sorority.
A retired correctional officer at Federal Correctional Institution-Beckley in Beaver, Bullock spent her career as a supervisor to other correctional officers in the male-dominated federal prison.
She said her advancement at FCI-Beckley allowed her to stay in her hometown of Beckley as she moved upward in her career.

It was perfect, said Bullock, because she never wanted to live anywhere else.
'The people are just so friendly, and so warming, and that's basically what I love about Beckley,' said Bullock. 'I've never thought about moving, because, like I said, I just love it here.'
As a Council member, Bullock has met with constituents in crises and pushed for residents' individual concerns to be heard.
She has also rallied and contacted federal officials to save a post office that was important to elderly residents and others in Ward 5.

Bullock said that she has always felt a desire to serve others.
Even as a child, she would pay visits to the elderly in her neighborhood, she said, so serving on Council was a logical step.
'After I retired in 2016, I realized that the City of Beckley needed some help, so I decided, 'Hey, Janine, you need to run for public office,'' said Bullock. 'That's basically what motivated me. I love the City of Beckley. I grew up here and I've always had a love for the city.'
She said her Christian faith is the inspiration for what she does. Whether she is listening to needs of constituents, working with local food banks such as Fishes and Loaves, or just seeking wisdom to lead and live her own life.

'Jesus Christ made me, and I have to always stay connected to Him and have a relationship with Him,' said Bullock. 'That's how success has come in my life, just about praying and believing He'll always take care of me, and He has. He has never, ever failed me.'
In 2021, the Beckley NAACP presented Bullock with the Living Legend Award for her community service.
