West Indies' Jomel Warrican wins ICC Men's Player of the Month for January
West Indies left-arm spinner Jomel Warrican has been named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for January 2025 following a standout performance in Pakistan, where he played a key role in securing West Indies' first Test victory in the country in 35 years. Warrican's performances on Pakistan's turning tracks were instrumental in West Indies' success. In the first Test in Multan, he registered career-best figures of 10/101 and contributed an unbeaten 31*, but Pakistan, led by Sajid Khan's 9/115, secured a 127-run win. In the second Test, Warrican's unbeaten 36 at No.11 helped West Indies recover from 95/9 to 163. He then took four wickets in the first innings, setting up a competitive contest. In the final innings, he delivered the match-winning spell, taking 5/27 as Pakistan were bowled out, sealing a 120-run win for West Indies—their first Test victory in Pakistan since 1990. Warrican finished the series with 19 wickets at an average of nine and 85 runs at 42.50, earning him the Player of the Series award. 'This award is an honour," Warrican said. "One of my goals was to take my first Test five-for, but I never imagined it would be this grand. Multan now holds a special place in my heart, not only for the historic win but for earning this recognition." This is the first time the 32-year-old has won the Player of the Month award and only the third time a West Indies player has received the honour, following Shamar Joseph and Gudakesh Motie in 2024.

Warrican and Mooney crowned ICC Players of the Month for January
· West Indian spinner Jomel Warrican wins his first Men's Player of the Month award after impressive wicket-taking feats in Pakistan · Beth Mooney claims Women's Player of the Month prize after starring role in Australia's dominant Ashes success · More about the ICC Player of the Month awards is available here . The International Cricket Council (ICC) has today revealed the ICC Men's and Women's Players of the Month for January 2025 as the West Indies' Jomel Warrican and Australia's Beth Mooney. Left-arm spinner Warrican inspired the islanders to their first Test win in Pakistan since 1990, while Mooney was at her scintillating best as Australia convincingly brushed aside England in the Ashes. Both players were crowned following a vote conducted among global fans registered at and a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media representatives. Warrican wins his maiden ICC Men's Player of the Month award from two other standout spinners from January's contests, Pakistan's Noman Ali and India's Varun Chakravarthy. The 32-year-old's exceptional month saw him take 19 wickets in two Test matches at an average of just 9.00. Despite Pakistan winning the opening encounter, ten wickets fell to the left-armer in spin-friendly conditions in Multan. Figures of three for 69 in the first innings preceded a career-best spell of seven for 32 in the second, where, with the addition of two runouts, Warrican played a part in all but one of Pakistan's wickets to fall. His brilliance continued in the second Test, not only with the ball but also with bat in hand. Arriving at the crease with scores at 95 for nine in the first innings, Warrican (36 not out) and Kemar Roach foiled the Pakistan onslaught and propelled the tourists to a respectable 163 all out. Contributions of four for 43 and five for 27 came either side of 18 more valuable runs in the second innings, and the spinner's all-round heroics heralded an historic 120-run victory alongside a richly deserved Player of the Series accolade. Warrican becomes the first West Indian to win the award since fellow spinner Gudakesh Motie back in May 2024. ICC Men's Player of the Month for January, Jomel Warrican, said: 'It's an honour to win this award. One of my goals for this year was my first five-for in Test cricket, but I did not think that it would be this grand! 'I see this as one small step in my cricketing career, and I look forward to many more. I promised my captain something special in this series, especially when my father, my biggest supporter, predicted a phenomenal performance for me. 'Multan has a special place in my heart: not only because of the historic win for the West Indies, beating Pakistan away from home, but also by earning this prestigious award.' As Australia stormed to Ashes victory over England, ICC Women's Player of the Month, Beth Mooney exhibited trademark firepower in statement performances across ODI and T20I encounters. A subdued start to the series was overturned when the opener dug deep with a battling half-century in the third ODI in Hobart. Stuttering to 59 for four, Mooney resisted a resurgent England with 50 from 64 balls, setting the platform for the home side to post 308 from their 50 overs and secure the ODI sweep. In the T20I contests that followed, Mooney consolidated her position as the top-ranked batter, striking 213 runs at a blistering strike rate of 146.89. Scores of 75 and 44 came before a stunning unbeaten 94 in 63 balls in Adelaide – her highest score in over five years in the format to drive home Australia's dominance against their fierce rivals. Mooney overcomes the West Indies' Karishma Ramharack and U19 Women's T20 World Cup winner Gongadi Trisha to seal the win, and ensures a second successive win for an Australian player after Annabel Sutherland was honoured in December. ICC Women's Player of the Month for January, Beth Mooney: 'It's an honour to be named the ICC Women's Player of the Month and I'd like to thank everyone who voted for me. 'January was an incredible month for the Australian Women's Cricket Team. Winning the Ashes in front of a home crowd was very special and to complete the series playing in the first ever day-night Test at the MCG in front of a record crowd for a Women's Test is a moment that we will all never forget.' 'This team continues to achieve amazing results, and I am so proud to be a part of it.' West Indies win Test in Pakistan for first time in 35 years
Spinner Jomel Warrican took five wickets as the West Indies won a Test match in Pakistan Monday for the first time in nearly 35 years. The West Indies won the second Test in Multan by 120 runs on day three to draw the series 1-1. Pakistan triumphed in the first Test by 127 runs, also in Multan. Warrican finished with nine wickets in the match -- 19 in the series -- to give the hosts a taste of their own medicine on sharply spinning pitches. The last time the West Indies won a Test in Pakistan was in Faisalabad in November 1990, having gone winless on their 1997 and 2006 tours. "We haven't played in Pakistan for a number of years, but we haven't won here in a while, so to come here and do it as a young group is incredible," said West Indian skipper Kraigg Brathwaite. He praised the performance of star player Warrican, who scored 36 not out in West the Indies first innings of 163 and took both the man of the match and player of the series awards. "Apart from his excellent bowling, he always says he's one of the best players of offspin in the Caribbean, so it's good to see him get some runs along with wickets." Pakistan skipper Shan Masood defended his side's spin ploy. "On the first day we were in the position we wanted -- even better, maybe, when we had them eight down," he said. Resuming on 76-4 and chasing 254, Pakistan's hopes of victory rested on Saud Shakeel, but Kevin Sinclair had the left-hander caught in the slips for 13 to further dent the home team's fading chances. Babar Azam top-scored with 31 while Mohammad Rizwan made 25 as Pakistan were bundled out for 133. Warrican bowled nightwatchman Kashif Ali with a straighter ball for one, leaving Pakistan in tatters at 76-6. Rizwan added 39 for the seventh wicket with Salman Ali Agha before Warrican dismissed the latter leg before for 15 and then bowled Rizwan to bring the tourists within two wickets of victory. Gudakesh Motie, who took 2-35, removed Noman Ali for six while Warrican deservedly took the last wicket, bowling Sajid Khan for seven to seal the victory. The defeat sent Pakistan crashing to ninth and last in the World Test Championship table, while the West Indies finished eighth. Agence France-Presse
