What made Josh Bell's home run the turning point in the Washington Nationals' 9-3 win
Josh Bell put in a stunning performance by hitting three home runs in the 10th inning, leading the Washington Nationals to a big 9-3 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. The designated hitter's three-run home run put the finishing touch on a record-setting offensive burst, turning what was supposed to be a close pitching battle into a remarkable home run derby. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Not only was Josh Bell's big hit his eighth home run of the year, but it was also his second straight game with a long ball, showing he can come through when his team needs him the most. Daylen Lile ignites Washington Nationals' offensive explosion in extra innings The Washington Nationals' record-breaking rally began with rookie outfielder Daylen Lile stepping into the spotlight against Seattle Mariners reliever Collin Snider. The 22-year-old prospect delivered his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly to deep right field that came tantalizingly close to clearing the fence for his maiden major league home run. Daylen Lile's clutch hit opened the floodgates for what would become an unstoppable offensive avalanche. Luis Garcia Jr. added two runs with a double, increasing the Nationals' lead before Josh Bell finished it off by hitting a three-run home run that stopped the Mariners from catching up. MacKenzie Gore dominates Seattle Mariners lineup before Washington Nationals bullpen secures victory Washington Nationals starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore showcased why he leads Major League Baseball in strikeouts this season, recording eight punchouts across six shutout innings to increase his season total to an impressive 101. The left-hander appeared poised for a complete game victory after James Wood provided offensive support with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Yet, the Seattle Mariners responded in the seventh when Leody Taveras and Ben Williamson each hit RBI singles to make the score 2-2. The turning point came in the eighth inning when Washington Nationals reliever Cole Henry escaped a dangerous situation by inducing weak contact from Randy Arozarena, Miles Mastrobuoni, and Rowdy Tellez with runners in scoring position. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Jose A. Ferrer ultimately earned the victory in relief, while the loss was charged to Collin Snider. Fans can catch the Washington Nationals' next game on Friday night as they travel to face the Arizona Diamondbacks, with right-hander Jake Irvin taking the mound. (AP Photo/Terrance Williams) WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Nationals placed rookie slugger Dylan Crews on the 10-day injured list with a left oblique strain on Wednesday. Crews, the second overall pick in the 2023 MLB amateur draft, exited before the sixth inning of Tuesday night's 5-3 win over Atlanta, after reporting stiffness during a fifth-inning plate appearance. He underwent an MRI earlier Wednesday. Advertisement 'We know he's got a strain,' Nationals manager Dave Martinez said shortly before Wednesday's scheduled game against the Braves was rained out. 'We don't know the severity of it yet until the doctor sees him this afternoon.' Crews' first major league injured list stint comes after he homered in consecutive games Sunday and Tuesday for the first time in his career. He's hitting .196 with seven home runs — a high among rookies — and 15 RBIs. He said he'd been managing soreness for roughly a week. 'It's never a positive, you always want to go out there and play every day,' Crews said. 'But I guess it could've been worse. So we'll just get in the training room and get it right so I can get on the field as soon as I can.' Advertisement In a corresponding move, the Nationals recalled Robert Hassell III from Triple-A Rochester. Hassell was scheduled to make his MLB debut by batting seventh and playing center field in Wednesday's rainout. Hassell was the eighth overall pick by San Diego in the 2020 draft. He'll become the fourth minor leaguer to reach the majors with Washington that was acquired in the 2022 trade that sent Juan Soto to the Padres, joining James Wood, CJ Abrams and MacKenzie Gore. 'It was a big trade, and everybody has high expectations for us,' Hassell said. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Terrance Williams) WASHINGTON (AP) — Washington Nationals rookie outfielder Dylan Crews will get an MRI on his sore lower left side and back after leaving Tuesday night's 5-3 win over Atlanta in the sixth inning. Crews, who will have the MRI on Wednesday, said he aggravated the injury swinging during a fifth-inning at-bat that resulted in a walk. Advertisement 'It kind of grabbed a little bit on the check swing,' said Crews, the No. 2 pick in the 2023 amateur draft. 'It's unfortunate.' Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Crews had been dealing with tightness in his lower left back and side since a diving play in Washington's previous series against the Braves in Atlanta last week. 'I am a little bit concerned,' Martinez said. 'Because it is that one gray area that could be a multitude of things.' Before leaving the game, Crews hit what proved to be the game's decisive solo home run in the second inning off Braves ace Spencer Strider. It was Crews' seventh homer of the season, and marked his first time homering in consecutive games after his three-run shot Sunday helped Washington to a 10-4 win at Baltimore. The 23-year-old Crews is batting .196 with seven home runs and 15 RBIs. ___ AP MLB:

(AP Photo/Matt Freed) WASHINGTON (AP) — Nationals third baseman Paul DeJong said Friday he was relieved that his vision wasn't affected when he suffered a broken nose, orbital and orbital floor from a pitch that hit him in the face last month. DeJong had surgery to repair the fractures and has been cleared for non-baseball activities. The nine-year veteran is hoping to be back in Washington's lineup before the All-Star break. Advertisement The 31-year-old was hit by a pitch from Pittsburgh's Mitch Keller on April 15. 'That was amazing for me to not have too much of a vision problem,' DeJong said before Washington began a three-game series against St. Louis. 'Having the surgery go well also, I mean, I trusted the surgeon and I knew my nose was going to be fixable. It was more just making sure my vision was OK because of how important that is for this sport. So, I'm thankful that things could have been a lot worse.' DeJong, who signed with the Nationals as a free agent in February, can do exercises like biking and air squats but has not yet been cleared to lift weights. He spoke about what it might feel like to face live pitching again after his ordeal. 'I think it's different than any injury that I have ever had, so it's hard for me to say how it's going to feel,' DeJong said. 'It's going to take some trust but I think the physical moment with the C-flap (on the batting helmet) will give me some confidence staying in there fearlessly and take my at-bat like I always would.' ___ AP MLB:
