Washingtonia from Kolkata to Punjab: With their ‘palms', brothers trio strike green gold
In an era where traditional farming often feels like a struggle for survival, three brothers from Tibbi Kalan in Ferozepur district of Punjab are defying the odds. Cousins Jaswinder Singh (34), Varinder Singh (36), and Gurjant Singh (35) have turned their land into a thriving business, earning a staggering Rs 1.5 crore from just one acre in four years (Rs 37.5 lakh per year per acre). Their secret? Palm tree farming — a practice virtually unheard of in the state. The trio, who owns around 8 acres of farmland each, used to grow wheat and paddy until 2017 when an out of the box idea transformed their lives. 'We've always been experimenting with new farming techniques. From flowers to mushrooms, we tried various options before settling on palm trees and naming the initiative 'The Palm garden Store' of Tibbi Kalan,' says Jaswinder Singh, a graduate. Initially, they procured palm saplings from Kolkata at Rs 37 per plant, including transportation costs. They started with two acres, where they planted 10,000 saplings of different varieties. They experimented with six to seven varieties, each on small sections to test which one suited the local soil and climate. They eventually found the perfect match — Washingtonian Palm trees. In 2019, they dedicated two acres to Washingtonia palms, which turned out to be a huge success. These palms, which grow up to 10 feet in height (including the leaves) in just 3.5 to 4 years, now fetch Rs 2,500 to Rs 2,800 per plant. After five years, the price increases to Rs 4,500 to Rs 5,500 per plant. Till date, they have sold 25,000 plants ranging from 3.5 to 5 years. By 2020, they expanded their operation, adding two more acres. With an ever-growing demand for palm trees, the farm now spans 9 acres, and two more acres are expected to be added before August. The brothers plant around 5,000 palm trees per acre and have ensured a steady cycle of harvesting and selling every six months. 'We are aiming to sell around 20,000 to 25,000 plants every six months by maintaining a proper rotation,' says Gurjant Singh, a postgraduate, adding that there is significant demand for this ornamental plant as greenery is now a prerequisite for every new locality. 'Initially, we were selling our plants to traders across Punjab, Haryana, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and other parts of North India. But now, we've shifted to direct selling, which has been more profitable as it eliminates the middleman. We've received an order of one lakh palm trees from Dubai,' says Jaswinder, adding that with its ability to be uprooted and replanted easily, palm trees are in high demand for landscaping in new localities in India as well. Additionally, compared to date palms, which take 10-12 years to mature, palm trees can grow to an impressive height in just 4-5 years, making them a popular choice for quick greenery. This can be grown entire year except two extreme cold and hot months each in Punjab. 'Despite the challenges and the mistakes we have made, it has been a learning experience. We learnt that plants in one field must be cleared before replanting, as planting new trees where large plants already exist can hinder the growth of the new ones. Palm farming requires minimal input costs, with each acre's expenditure hovering around Rs 3.50 lakh but the returns are huge. The costs include plant purchase, transplantation, pruning, weed clearing, and irrigation. While palm trees require 20 irrigations a year, much of this is provided by rainwater during the monsoon, making the overall water consumption relatively low,' Varinder says. Jaswinder adds that they use very little fertilizer — just cow dung manure in the beginning. 'Once you plant the trees, you need to wait 3-4 years for them to gain height. Tall trees have a huge demand and excellent price, so they're definitely worth the wait,' he adds. The brothers have also started diversifying by introducing Bismarckia palms, which are in high demand for their silver-toned leaves and can be sold at Rs 10,000-15,000 per plant in the wholesale market, depending on size and age.

Modern Landscape Design Ideas to Elevate Your Outdoor Space
Creating a luxurious and functional outdoor space is no longer a luxury—it's a lifestyle necessity. Whether you own a villa in Palm Jumeirah or a modern home in Jumeirah Island, your outdoor area should reflect elegance, innovation, and comfort. As one of the best landscaping companies in Dubai, we take pride in transforming simple backyards into spectacular sanctuaries. Below, we explore modern landscape design ideas to elevate your outdoor space to a premium level. Incorporating a Modern Pergola in Dubai's Climate A modern pergola in Dubai is not just a shade structure—it is a bold architectural statement. With extreme summer heat, having a pergola isn't just aesthetic, it's essential. Pergolas made from aluminum, wood, or metal with a powder-coated finish offer resilience and style. Opt for smart pergolas with motorized louvers, built-in lighting, and retractable curtains for a high-tech, resort-style atmosphere. Best landscaping companies in Dubai now integrate pergolas with vertical gardens, hanging planters, and built-in seating to optimize space and functionality. Whether freestanding by the pool or attached to the villa façade, pergolas create the perfect setting for entertaining, dining, or unwinding. Minimalist Hardscaping: The Foundation of Modern Outdoor Design Hardscaping is the skeleton of any premium outdoor space. Sleek walkways made of natural stone, porcelain tiles, or exposed aggregate concrete form clean lines and define zones. Our designs incorporate geometric symmetry and linear patterns that reflect the principles of contemporary architecture. Accent elements like floating steps, linear drainage systems, and integrated lighting strips add a futuristic flair. For maximum elegance, consider monochromatic tones with occasional pops of texture—like basalt stone walls or polished travertine benches. Lush Greenery Balanced with Sculptural Plants While modern design emphasizes minimalism, strategic greenery adds warmth and life. Use a palette of drought-resistant plants such as oleander, bougainvillea, Washingtonia palms, and cycads to echo Dubai's climate while ensuring low maintenance. We recommend mixing architectural plants like agave or yucca with soft ornamental grasses for a contrast in form and motion. Raised planters, symmetrical garden beds, and sculptural topiary add structure and interest. Smart irrigation systems can be incorporated to keep your oasis thriving year-round. Outdoor Living Rooms with Contemporary Flair Today's outdoor spaces function as extensions of the home. With premium materials and seamless design, we create outdoor living rooms complete with modular sofas, center tables, and entertainment zones. Materials such as teak, powder-coated aluminum, and marine-grade upholstery ensure durability in Dubai's climate. A modern pergola in Dubai works exceptionally well as a canopy for such spaces, complete with built-in sound systems, cooling fans, and ambient lighting. Add a fire pit or an outdoor heater for comfort during cooler months and transform your space into a year-round retreat. Water Features as the Focal Point Best landscaping companies in Dubai frequently incorporate water elements for their sensory appeal and cooling effects. Sleek reflective pools, cascading fountains, and geometric water walls lend an upscale resort ambiance. For modern aesthetics, we design zero-edge pools, floating stepping stones, and LED-lit water curtains that blend seamlessly with minimalistic landscaping. Not only do they look impressive, but the sound of moving water also adds a calming atmosphere. Luxury Pools with Integrated Landscaping A swimming pool is no longer just for swimming—it's a design centerpiece. We construct custom infinity pools, plunge pools, and lap pools with sharp angles and seamless finishes like glass mosaics, quartz aggregate, and limestone coping. Integrating the pool deck with Softscapes and hardscape ensures a harmonized look. Surround the pool with sunken seating areas, fire features, and pergolas for a luxurious resort vibe. A modern pergola in Dubai with UV-resistant fabric can also be used as a poolside cabana for lounging. Sustainable Lighting Solutions for Modern Landscapes Illuminating your landscape effectively transforms it at night. Using LED strip lighting, solar-powered bollards, and smart light controls, we create a visually stunning yet energy-efficient space. Accent lighting on trees, under benches, and along pathways enhances both safety and beauty. Our design philosophy focuses on layered lighting—ambient, task, and accent—to create mood and highlight textures. Motion sensors and timers further contribute to energy-saving and security. Outdoor Kitchens and Alfresco Dining Spaces Entertaining outdoors is a hallmark of Dubai living. With built-in BBQ stations, pizza ovens, countertops in granite or Dekton, and stainless-steel cabinetry, we create fully functional outdoor kitchens. Add a dining area under a modern pergola in Dubai to ensure comfort and style. We design layouts that accommodate both intimate family dinners and large gatherings. Incorporate mini-fridges, sinks, and bar counters to make your outdoor space a culinary haven. Smart Outdoor Technologies for Effortless Living As one of the best landscaping companies in Dubai, we integrate cutting-edge technologies that elevate convenience. From app-controlled irrigation systems, lighting, and pergolas, to Wi-Fi-enabled speakers and surveillance cameras, our smart landscapes keep you connected while relaxing outdoors. Automated systems are housed discreetly, maintaining the clean lines and minimalistic aesthetic of the landscape while offering full control and peace of mind. Customized Metal and Glass Accents Modern landscape design isn't complete without bespoke details. We fabricate metal privacy screens, aluminum planters, laser-cut panels, and glass balustrades to enhance form and function. These accents double as both decorative and practical solutions for privacy and style. Combined with a modern pergola in Dubai, these custom elements reinforce the geometric and artistic language of the design. Choose from powder-coated finishes, brushed aluminum, or stainless steel to match your architectural style. Conclusion Modern landscape design in Dubai is about achieving a perfect blend of form, function, and flair. With the expertise of the best landscaping companies in Dubai, your outdoor space can become an architectural masterpiece—tailored to your lifestyle, climate, and taste. Whether you envision a modern pergola in Dubai, a luxury pool, or a full-scale outdoor living space, the possibilities are as boundless as your imagination. TIME BUSINESS NEWS

Using Real Trees to Bring Nature Indoors
There is a growing movement worldwide to use plants in building design to establish closer connections with nature and soften hard city styles. The movement also seeks to improve designs to help protect the environment and increase personal wellness. Many of the efforts by architects and designers have centered on one natural element: trees. Examples of such design can be found in many places, including New York City. A building in Manhattan that houses the Ford Foundation has a 12-story light-filled entrance area, or atrium. It is also filled with plants and flowers including magnolias, eucalyptus, jacaranda, cryptomeria, iron bark and pear trees. Another example sits within New York City's Brookfield Place shopping center. The center's main atrium includes a collection of 12-meter-tall Washingtonia palm trees. In Singapore, the city-state's Jewel Changi airport offers travelers an inviting environment. It has 2,500 trees native to nations including Madagascar, Australia, Malaysia and Indonesia. The airport includes a 2.4-hectare indoor forest with walking paths. Some apartments and mixed-use buildings are also putting trees and other greenery into their designs. Such buildings are sometimes called 'greenscrapers,' a term that comes from the word 'skyscraper.' In Milan, Italy, architect Stefano Boeri designed Bosco Verticale, a 44-story building with 800 trees and other greenery. In the Netherlands, he also built the Trudo Vertical Forest. This is a low-income apartment building with trees growing on all sides. Similar changes are also happening inside private homes. In some, trees are brought right indoors. In others, outdoor trees are carefully placed as important partners in the building plan. Some architects even build homes around existing trees. Others plant one or more trees inside the home. And some architects or designers imagine natural settings indoors by using parts of trees. These designs are meant to create the look and feel of real wood, while bringing feelings of peace and calm. A calm heart of the home Ryoko Okada is an architect at New York City's Oda Architecture. She told The Associated Press that she and her co-workers aim to bring outdoor elements indoors as often as they can. 'There's nothing more calming than being surrounded by nature…' Okada said. She added that a living tree indoors can bring peace and happiness as people watch it grow and change. Framing the views with existing trees Another design example came from KAA Design Group in Los Angeles. A team from the company created a modern home that uses the property's existing trees, such as cork oaks, rare Torrey pines, and magnolias. One very large, old cork oak sits in the center of the property. At first, the owners did not like the look and said they wanted the tree gone. One of the company's partners, Grant Kirkpatrick, had to persuade the homeowners to keep it. Kirkpatrick explained he succeeded by pointing out that the tree was 'a 300-year-old antique that should be featured rather than removed.' The driveway on that property also offers a calming design. A black pine tree rises up from the driveway like a piece of natural art. In addition, views from almost every window in the house feature the beautiful nature outdoors. Things to consider Okada says she suggests people do not plant a full-size tree in their home without first seeking expert advice. She notes that a living tree will only do well if certain conditions – such as air, light and soil – are right. Okada added that a living tree '…needs to be supported by proper infrastructure to stay alive and avoid home damage.' She also urges people to heavily research a tree's natural environment to avoid drawing in unwanted pests. Kirkpatrick noted that planting a tree indoors can be difficult. He explained that at least 1.2 meters of soil depth is needed, along with lots of natural light and the right temperature. Other ways to use trees besides having a live one Kirkpatrick said he worked on one property that experienced a serious fire in 2016. His team decided to use parts from one of the burned manzanita trees in the interior design. The piece was painted black and placed inside the property. He said it now represents an eye-catching, natural art piece. I'm Anna Matteo. Kim Cook reported this story for the Associated Press from New York, New York. Anna Matteo adapted it for VOA Learning English. _________________________________________________ Words in This Story skyscraper -n. a very tall building style -n. a particular manner or technique by which something is done, created, or performed architect -n. a person who designs buildings and advises in their construction apartment -n. a room or set of rooms used as a dwelling antique -adj. being in the style or fashion of former times feature -n. a part or detail that stands out infrastructure -n. the underlying foundation or basic framework pest -n. a plant or animal harmful to human beings or human concerns

'600 trees planted daily': Dubai saw 57% rise in green spaces in 2024
In a massive green feat, as many as 216,500 trees were planted across Dubai in 2024 — a 17 per cent rise from 2023. This translates to an average of 600 trees being planted every day last year, said the Dubai Municipality. The emirate's green spaces also expanded by 391.5 hectares — a 57 per cent growth from 2023 — owing to afforestation and landscaping efforts. Further, the Dubai Municipality, as part of its broader greening initiatives, planted 5.3 million seedlings of flowers and ornamental plants while replacing 45 million seasonal flowers across three cycles throughout the year. Among the diverse range of trees that Dubai Municipality planted were indigenous species such as Ghaf, Sidr, and Samar, as well as ornamental trees like neem, olive, Indian jasmine, and various palm varieties. Evergreen species such as Washingtonia, Bismarckia, Poinciana, Pongamia, and Acacia franciana have also been introduced to enhance the emirate's green canopy. Under the Dubai Green Project, as many as 165 beautification projects were implemented in residential and urban areas, main and secondary roads, bridge intersections, public parks, recreational facilities, and family squares. Badr Anwahi, CEO of the Public Facilities Agency at Dubai Municipality, said: 'The beautification and planting projects implemented by Dubai Municipality reflect our commitment to enhancing Dubai's sustainability and aesthetic appeal.' He added: 'Through sustainable and innovative urban planning, we strive to strike a balance between modern agricultural practices and the unique character that defines our emirate. Our vision is to enhance the quality of life in Dubai for both residents and visitors by expanding green spaces, improving air and soil quality, mitigating the impacts of climate change, and preserving biodiversity.' Dubai Municipality's 2024 projects included landscaping and greening key intersections and bridges such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Jamayel Street, Al Khawaneej Street, Al Khail Road, Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, and Latifa Bint Hamdan Street.
