What we know about Waterbury, Connecticut mall shooting
Police said five adults were wounded when shots rang out shorty before 5 p.m. Tuesday. All of the victims are expected to survive their injuries.
A person of interest was taken into custody. So far, no charges have been filed.
Investigators believe the gunman was armed with a semi-automatic pistol and, possibly, aided by an accomplice.
"We do not believe this was a random act of violence. We believe this started as a conflict and escalated," Waterbury Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo said on the scene.
The gunfire sent people running for cover and sheltering inside stores. Once the scene was clear, officers went store to store to escort them out.
"A girl got shot. She was losing a lot of blood. It was crazy, and I tell everybody, 'Get out of here, let's go.' I tried to get everybody out of here in safety," said witness Javon Turner.
Lamont released a statement Tuesday night, reading in part, "Our hearts break for the Waterbury community, the victims and their families who have been impacted by this incident."
Waterbury is about 30 miles southwest of Hartford, Connecticut.
