South African sprinters excel at Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi as Nene leads charge

Image: BackpagePix With all the attention focused of Zakithi Nene's blistering world lead of 43.76 to take gold in the 400m at at the Kip Keino Classic in Nairobi on Saturday, there were also podium finishes for Bayanda Walaza in the 100m and Shaun Maswanganyi in the men's 200m contest. The achievements marked another stellar weekend for South African sprinters. Nene was the best of the SA athletes on the international track and field circuit this weekend. All eyes will be on the one-lap star as he heads for the Rome Diamond League meeting, to see if he can repeat the feat. Junior record holder Walaza also impressed in the men's 100m race in Nairobi, though he had to settle for the runner-up spot. He got off to a good start but the athletes were called back by the starter, and though there were no disqualifications for a false start, they were made to go again and this time Walaza looked a little hesitant out of the blocks the second time. Bayanda Walaza strikes again as he lowers his SA age-group record
Bayanda Walaza pressed on with his incredible rise as he won the men's 100m race at the Boris Hanzekovic Memorial meet in Zagreb on Saturday in 9.94sec, lowering his own national under-20 record in the process. The 19-year-old, who finished a massive 0.26sec in front of his nearest rival, Owen Ansah of Germany, is now fourth on the all-time age-group list and joint fourth on the overall South African roster, alongside Wayde van Niekerk and training partner Gift Leotlela. Only countrymen Akani Simbine (9.82), Benjamin Richardson (9.86) and Shaun Maswanganyi (9.91) have been faster. Walaza broke the national age-group mark in Pretoria in March when he became the ninth South African to dip under 10 seconds, clocking 9.99. The three faster under-20 runners are Issamade Asinga of Surinam (9.89 in 2023), Botswana's Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo (9.91 in 2022) and American Christian Miller (9.93 in 2024). Walaza has enjoyed a meteoric rise in less than a year, winning Olympic silver in the 4x100m relay in Paris, taking the 100m-200m sprint double at the 2024 under-20 world championships in Lima, Peru, and winning 4x100m gold at the World Relays in China earlier this month.

All eyes on North West province as Potchefstroom plays host to ASA Senior Championships
JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's best track and field athletes have gathered in Potchefstroom this week for the ASA Senior Championships. The event will be hosted at the MWU McArthur Athletics Stadium from 24-26 April. In the men's event, top athlete Olympian and world junior champion Bayanda Walaza will be lining up against 400m world record holder Wayde van Niekerk, who will feature in the 100m and 200m races. Joining them in Potchefstroom will be Abduraghmaan Karriem, Tsebo Matsoso and Retshidisitswe Mlenga, and local favourites Benjamin Richardson. Viwe Jingqi will be defending her 100m national title against 17-year-old Hannah Hope Vermaak, who beat Jingqi at the recent Golden Grand Prix in Botswana, where both athletes clocked 11.44 seconds. Olympian Prudence Sekgodiso will also headline the championships after winning the women's 800m world indoor title earlier this season. But she will have to fight it out with Charne Swart, who won the 2024 national two-lap title. In the field events, Olympic shot-put finalist Kyle Blignaut, who landed the shot at 20.32m at the Golden Grand Prix in Botswana two weeks ago, will be competing. As well as former World Athletics U20 Championships high jump medallist Brian Raats, who cleared 2.21m at an indoor meeting in Slovakia in February.
