Earnest, Wayman secure top-10 finishes
Two top-10 elite placings for emerging teenagers Sacha Earnest and Luke Wayman highlighted New Zealand performances in the downhill finals in France for the second round of the UCI world series yesterday. Earnest, 19, and Wayman, 18, both finished 10th in the elite finals on a challenging and blown-out downhill test at Loudenvielle in the French Pyrenees. It was the first top-10 finish for the teenagers in elite racing as the rising New Zealand talent continued to make their mark among the gravity racing fraternity. Earnest, the two-time junior world championship medallist, is in her first year in elite company. She was the only Kiwi to make it through the double qualifying system, producing a solid performance for her 10th place, 18sec behind winner Gracey Hemstreet (Canada). Only two New Zealand riders made it through double qualifying for the elite men's final, the first for Christchurch rider Wayman. He produced a strong run on the challenging course, where speed was vital in the opening flat section before giving way to a demanding and twisting section through the forest. Wayman finished just 5.314sec behind winner Jackson Goldstone, a good return for the young professional riding for the respected Continental Atherton team. Fellow New Zealand rider Tuhoto-Ariki Pene, who qualified with an impressive run, finished 22nd after a mistake on the bottom part of the course after he was fastest in the initial open section. The sole podium for Kiwi riders went to Hawke's Bay teenager Tyler Waite who claimed his second runner-up finish in the junior men's grade, where he is now second in the overall standings. Waite, the Yeti-Fox professional from Clive, was just half a second behind winner Bode Burke (USA). The dry and dusty track produced some holes in the racing line that caught out some riders, notably Kaikoura's Oli Clark, who was fastest on the junior men's course when he flatted his front wheel which ended his hopes. There were strong performances from Queenstown's teenaged pair of Rory Meek and Malik Boatwright, who finished sixth and eighth respectively. Palmerston North's Jonty Williamson was 11th. Rotorua 17-year-old Bellah Birchall was the best of the Kiwis in the junior women's final, finishing fourth, just 0.6sec outside the podium. Outstanding Tauranga rider Eliana Hulsebosch was the fastest on the course near the end of her run, until she fell but remarkably recovered to complete the course in fifth with Queenstown's Indy Deavoll, 17, finishing sixth. — APL

Florida GOP appoints new Manatee Republican board, removes 2 elected by voters
BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — Republican voters in Manatee County elected Trent Wayman as State Committeeman during the August primary election. Jacqueline Heisse also won her election for State Committeewoman. Those two positions serve as key liaisons between the local and state party. Months later, they were told they were removed from office. Hegseth creates makeup studio in Pentagon 'There was never any due process. There was no hearing for us,' Wayman said. State Republican Party Chair Evan Power sent a letter stating they were removed from office after a recommendation by the Florida GOP's grievance committee and a turnaround plan for the local party. The previous executive committee for Manatee Republicans was suspended last year after a mountain of complaints and issues. Wayman also filed a complaint against his local party. 'Our committee had not really done any work. In fact, I think we only had one meeting last year that was successful because of all the problems we were having,' Wayman said. The local Republican then said he started a local chapter connected to the Florida Republican Assembly when the Manatee Republican Party was in turmoil. 'My wife and I started the Republican Assembly the year before in 2023 because we saw the need for it,' Wayman said. 'I think what really upset them is that we beat all of their candidates in the primary.' Currently, the Supervisor of Elections Office shows close to 138,000 registered Republicans in Manatee County. In comparison, there are about 71,000 Democrats. Mark Flanagan, who also served in the Florida legislature, has been appointed to be the chair of the Manatee Republican Executive Committee. 'We have an incredible team that has been put together,' Flanagan said. Flanagan agrees with the state party reorganizing the local party. 'We are the party that champions law and order and there must always be a commitment, in a local organization and a state organization, to adhere to those same policies that we expect of others,' Flanagan said. As for Wayman, he plans to keep sharing his story after being removed from his elected position, which the Florida GOP said it has the power to do. 'I'm going to keep fighting this. I'm going to keep getting this message out until someone listens,' Wayman said. He said he's currently in the process of starting a new political party called America First. Kansas man killed when van crashes on I-40 in Texas Panhandle
A Kansas man was killed when a van crashed early Monday on Interstate 40 in Oldham County. Lonny Wayman, 57, of Arkansas City, Kansas, was identified as the driver killed when his van veered off I‑40 Monday morning in Oldham County, according to a statement from the Texas Department of Public Safety. At 9:07 a.m. Monday, officers responded to the scene about 5.6 miles east of Vega after reports that a vehicle had left the roadway. A preliminary investigation indicates the 2021 Ram 3500 Promaster, traveling westbound, departed from the north side of the highway for reasons still under investigation. The van struck several fences along the westbound lanes before coming to rest in a field. Officials confirmed that Wayman was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but they have not yet determined what caused the vehicle to leave the roadway. No other injuries were reported. The highway, which has a posted speed limit of 75 mph, was dry under clear skies when the incident occurred. The Texas Highway Patrol is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
